My mother would recycle (technically upcyle) our old toys, they would emerge as something "new" under the tree the following Christmas. I still have an old dressmaker doll that was broken, mom repaired her limbs, made a wig for her nearly bald head from my own hair (she had saved it from my first haircut), she made a bridal gown with lace, beads, old jewelry. There were two dolls under the tree recycle by mom for my sister and I, that was the year I turned ten, I am just shy of 70. My mother had a gift, but, she never saw it that way, she did love doing it, but, she was also very practical. There was not alot of "fun" money left over, so mom would make the best of what she could, as would my dad. So, from the time I could hold a pencil and moved beyond a scribble, to scissors and glue, I was inspired to craft and create. To make use of what was already available to reinvent or recreate. I was about seven when I made my first dollhouse out of a cardboard box, there was "wallpaper" from magazines, furniture "upholstered" with fabric scraps. It probably was a monstrosity, but, I was very proud of it, until one of my cousins visited and crushed it. I was devastated at the time. Lol! My life since has been filled with my art and my craft (it's a strange thing, but, I do distinguish the two). Besides my mom, I had other influences that inspired my crafting skill sets and taught me the basics that I would expand on or apply to other media down the road. An old friend and I are partnered in a small craft business, based in upcycling, we have been in business for over a dozen years. The point of this ridiculously long winded post is I have been at this for a very long time and I have honed my skills to as professional a finish as a hand made product possibly can. When your channel first popped into my feed, I thought this is just going to be another lackluster craft youtuber. Whoo boy, was I wrong. I immediately subscribed. Diedre, you continue to impress, thank you. Despite my experience and despite my abilities ... your videos have taught this old dog new tricks. You are a treasure with your endless tips, tricks and work arounds, using readily available and easily obtained products. This video is just another example (wonder how this would decoupage ... hmmm). Again, Diedre, thank you. You, and, what you do are very much appreciated.
My mom too, taught me to be frugal. And I'm always looking for new ideas to reuse old items, but Diedre is top notch! I truly appreciate her sharing with us ❤
This project reminded me of when I was in the 6th grade and we made Mexican skirts out of sheets of packing paper. We colored the paper with crayon colors and then crumpled and wrinkled up the paper so much that it became pliable and cloth-like. This was back in 1970! HAHAHA 🥳😂
What a fun technique. I tore pieces of brown bags and glued them on a bench I was making. To get the leather look I added shoe polish which made it look like leather. I also saw the bag and shoe polish technique used to cover a wall to look like leather wallpaper. 😊🤗😚❤❤
Wow! I can’t wait to do this! Your videos are absolutely perfect with editing and instructions. Camera angle is always perfect so we can clearly see what you’re doing. Thanks for being YOU!
I just did a few - I didnt use coffee/tea stain - ony put the die over it - I tried it with brwn, blue, green and burgundy colored dye (because people might want a different color - this is junk journaling after all!) and I'm loving it - it's still drying but it's looking to awesome .... the blue spread more when I applied the hand cream - maybe I should have let it dry longer but I just love it too much ... maybe next time I'l let the blue dry overnight for a more stark difference between the paper and the creases .... but thank you for this awesome idea, Deidre!!!!!! So many options :D
I was searching for something totally different and I saw your video so I just gave up on what I was looking for and I just had to see what you have going on and it’s a brilliant idea as always ! 🤗
I have seen other videos on making faux leather but this one is by far the fastest easiest n thrifty way!thk u!lovely result n as u so tightly say...the bonus is creaming your hands in the bargain! I love junk journaling n this is yet another inspiration to add to my pages Thx again Deirdre!you rock!love from India!
Thank you for sharing your recipe for fake light brown Leather. It is nice to know where to start with products We have here at home. Please share more 🙏 🇺🇸
Hi Diedre, Marlene from Michael's here. Been devouring all your videos since we met! ...AND loving it! As Maxwell Smart used to say. I made a faux leather on cardstock once long ago. I believe I used odorless solvent on it. It turned out so well I couldn't bear to use it 😂. I pull it out every so often a remind myself to try it again. Love the idea of decoupage, I've been meaning to make a wooden tissue box to hide ugly boxes. I think this technique would look great in on that box if I ever get it done!
Hello there my friend so glad you found my channel and are enjoying my videos! My mod podge is getting low so next trip into town I’ll probably see you❤️
I make this & use brown shoe polish from DT to accent the wrinkles ! Can't wait to try hand lotion on it !! Your paper came out beautiful , looking vintage !! Great 👍 job ! Take care and TFS my friend!! 🌹
I think I’m going to really like using Vaseline Intensive Care Formulas instead of the more expensive Biosilk & Garner’s Sleek & Shine for this fabulous faux leather technique!🤪 Your skill to teach is fab!
I absolutely love the effect...although it doesn't look 'leathery' to me. I'd still use the technique, just because I really like how it looks. Thank-you for sharing.
You can create your own decoupage paper like this too 😃👍🏼😃 I bet that would look amazing!! Hopefully the oil in the paper would allow it to decoupage to a project. It would look beautiful sanded on the edges of a project.
Oh I love this technique. I don't have ink but I am definitely going to get some. Your videos are so informative. Thanks so much for taking your time to sharing all these techniques and crafts with us. ♥️
There was a technique many many years ago using mod podge and a lighter I believe, on brown kraft paper that was very popular. I saw it on Aleene's Creative Living show. But im thinking yours may be simpler. I can't remember the technique obviously, but a bit of googling would yield much I'm certain. Thank you for always pushing the envelope, and sharing your results!
❤️Hey, Deidre! I just found my love for junk journaling too. Thanks for making this tutorial O loved.... The way it came out. Have you think about making a JJ channel?. I would love to see all of your ideas ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks Tamy glad you enjoyed the Video. I will be doing more junk journalling videos during the winter when it gets too cold to work out in my shed so stay tuned
@@OurUpcycledLife oh my goodness yay!.... 🙏🏾❤️ Than you.... I'm obsessed with you channel 😅 so I will be here for sure. I actually said in my head when I learn about: "I wonder if Deidre knows about this?, I bet she would have amazing ideas for this". 😩❤️❤️ Awe... I can't wait 🥰
I’ve made faux leather using a Manila envelope. Everything is done the same way except no scrunching required. Mine turned out well, I made a book cover with it since I was making a journal at the time.
OMG you journal as well? I don't know how you do it!! My house is outta control, my summer nautical decor took 2 months of cutting shapes from. Cardboard with single edge razor blades, painting various tecniques and decoupaging. Now the installation is giving me fits aarrgh!!!!! So disappointed.. I may just have to return to housework full time .....wah! Your paper looks great !
@@OurUpcycledLife Thank you so much for letting me know. I have the stuff to do it but was worried about what it might do. I have a friend I would really like to make the leather work look for. I think they would love it. Thank you for your help.
If the faux leather paper is placed next to standard copy paper or journal paper, Does the lotion leach out and cause any stains on the adjacent paper?
