Another way to fill the tube. Flatten the end about an inch . Open it, then fold first side down and in then the second side over on first fold. Fill from the other end and when full , flatten the ends and fold the same as the first fold. Looks as a pillow or gift box. Have fun. We make them for our bar be cue starters using dryer lint.

The best fire starters I know of are real pine cones. I save my empty toilet paper tubes for the Preschool and Kindergarten classes to use in their art making. Thinking about it now,, I wonder if those little people would enjoy gluing tiny scraps of fabric to paper and cardboard also. They are already gluing buttons, beads, glitter, feathers, strings, pipe cleaners, seeds, sticks, straws, and sequence on. These little art projects help small children develop their fine motor skills. I was allowed to play with our household trash when I was a child. Mom usually burned yesterday's (made from trash) art in the wood cook stove every morning to get the fire started (so she could cook meals and heat the water we washed in). Thank you for a wonderful new idea.

This is a great idea for disaster kits. Those of us that are in earthquake country know about having a 3-day supply just in case. A good thing to add to them is dryer lint. That stuff is incredibly flammable.

This is a great idea. I've made firestarters with the paper egg cartons filled with dryer lint and pour a little melted wax on top to hold everything, but I like your idea a lot better!

I sew with a lot of flannel. I take scraps in a little pile, on top of a piece of selvage which I tie. I dont know if it works with regular quilt fabric, but it makes really quickly and the flannel catches fire well.

Scraps of cotton quilt batting also work wonderfully to start a fire. I cut the tube open and shape it to be flat, pile on fabric shavings and thin batting scraps, and light it up. Works every time. Dryer lint also works well to get a fire started while adding the small bits of kindling. Can’t wait for cooler temps and time at the backyard firepit.

What a neat idea, Brenda. I'm a little bit concerned, though, about any metallics, pearlized fabrics, glitter, etc., and their possible toxicity in an indoor fireplace/stove. They'd probably be fine in an outdoor campfile, though. (I'm reminded of a family that died because they burned some treated woodscraps in their woodstove.) I think that occasional crafty videos are OK, but I hope you keep most of your videos on the subject of quilting. Sorry to be a Debbie Downer... ❤
