@HeAintGonnaEmailYou some are better than others, IME it's the older cards if you can get them. Typically anything is fine just don't use etched foils otherwise you'll peel off everything down to the white paper layer.
This proxy tutorial inspired me to start a few months ago. I even have it as an assignment in my class now. I just print on holographic sticker paper instead tho. Much simpler of a process than blanking foils and printing on transparent paper and then gluing on. Your tutorial on editing with Photopea is perfect. It has truly brought a ton of happiness to my life, it is a great creative outlet.
Been doing this method for years now!! They look gorgeous! I recommend if people want to go the next step to get small amounts of matte glosse finish mixed with the smallest amout of glitter, to stroke across wind lines in the images, or brighten a star in the background! I have a high tide with a cosmic moon in the back of the art that I swiped over glosse with, and it looks fantastic! Great video and thanks again!
Remember to always use acetone either outdoors or in a well ventilated space, though I don’t imagine most people will make that mistake more than once. It can also dissolve many plastics so don’t just splash it around things you care about! Respect the tools, and they’ll do the work you want them to. Happy proxying!
Stubbled upon this and I must say that this is just...fan-flipping-tastic! Amazing work, clean walkthrough and you made the process so simple. I had to add a few images (namely for planeswalkers) but I think overall, the template that you use and the fonts that you provide are just super. Would love to know if you create any additional templates in the future. Thank you very much for this.
Thanks for the kind words, I am working on another proxy tutorial vid in which I use a token template that I designed. The video is not out yet, but you can get the free and publicly available template I'll be using in the video in my channel's discord under #proxy-resources, link in the description.
This is awesome! About 9 months ago I got back into magic with a friend I never knew used to play after both having not played 16 years. Since then we've gotten 5 people from our circle of friends to try magic and get hooked on it, playing commander every week has bought us much joy and closer together as friends. Thanks to this tutorial I'm going to be making them all their own versions of their favourite commanders with them as the artwork as a little Christmas something, all in glorious foil goodness! Cheers, keep up the great work!
You'll be pleased to know that if you make 60 of these, you can totally sell them for $1,000. You don't even have to give the buyer specific cards, just 60 random ones.
gonna get back into magic because of this. So, i thank you. I used to spend too much money on the game, and it was a problem. No longer will i spend any more than it is to print them off XD
been thinking of looking for someone to do some foil cards for me, but it is i who will be doing the foil cards! thank you for the tutorial yo, you’ve made my playgroup a whole lot more interesting
Thank you for sharing this video. Easily the best one I've seen. You've made it simple for us with your templates and given us every step concisely. Hopefully I can share some of mine in your discord soon.
I see this comment a lot, but dude, you seriously made a phenomenal tutorial. That’s easy to understand and highly effective. I would high five you if I could! I liked and subscribed
I personally use Rainbow Vinyl sticker sheets that are clear, and just carefully stick my cardstock printed custom cards onto the vinyl before sleeving them. The effect comes out really nicely and I can use all kinds of effects and designs for my foil. (Like hearts or a shatter effect.) If you REALLY wanted to get technical, you could even trace part of the card onto the vinyl and then cutting it. You would get a nice custom effect that looks hella sharp
nice, i did the same thing but before attaching the picture i usually use gold or metalic spray paint to give some pattern to the foil, works prety good
What kind/brand of transparent sticky paper dose the FedEx store use? Just am trying to order in bulk so I can do everything at home. Thanks again for such a great video! And information provided!
You liked that art (that you found on pinterest) so much that you gave the artist/source full credit and put links in your description to it. For credit purposes and so other people could look at the artist's work. You also verified the artist is fine with you making derivatives based on whatever license they had. Very responsible. Oh wait.. you did none of that. The video and instructions are good (though I wish you'd shown the scissoring, that part is FIDDLY) but people taking art and not giving credit/links/etc is a pet peeve of mine.
@@hyperbooper water based polyurethane (spray can), get the best quality so you don't get big droplets and a uniform coat. can use a hair dryer without heat to speed up the drying
I met a guy at my LGS a few years ago that would make his own foil proxies like this except the art on the card is similar to what wizards is doing now with the basic land cycle in innistrad: crimson vow. They were so sick
Great tutorial, thanks! weirdly, I noticed the strixhaven and zendikar rising foils do not like acetone and the shininess rubbed off with the text, revealing the white behind the mylar
wow... amaziing.!!! u should make them for people ! i would buy some off u.the stickers...but yeah im gonna give it a try looks super dope and way cheaper and cooler then alter sleeves
In my tests, all AFR foil cards scrub off extremely easily, not just lands - any foils. You might have to scrub a bit harder to get the Volos alt golden foil background off, but even that still comes off pretty easily compared to other sets I tried scrubbing.
This video is amazing! Exactly what I have been looking for; I have already joined the Discord! I do have a question though. This example shown is for an Instant, but if I wanted to create one for a creature card, how would I get the box for the Power/Toughness in the bottom right since this one does not start with it? Very new to this whole thing lol
Thanks for the kind words, if you'd actually like to donate here's a link www.paypal.com/donate/?business=RSH9QQLGF2SE2&no_recurring=0¤cy_code=USD
Amazing tutorial. Very in-depth. Are there templates similar to the Godzilla or Dracula borders, so that one could make their own worlds beyond style proxies?
When de-inking a card, don't use paper towel or anything that can absorb fluid, or the acetone will seep in and damage the edges of the backside of the card.
This video earned a sub and like from me, getting back into it mostly kitchen games with friends so proxies arent an issue for our group thankfully. I do have a question on the image though, is there anywhere where there images sized already for cards but without any text? Essentially I am looking for imagines like the one you found but would like to browse more possibly to be able to make our own custom proxies. thanks in advance!
Just tried this for myself and it turned out pretty good!! Might you know any way to add an additional section like in the "Lorien Brooch" trailblazer boots reprint, so it has a different name but still shows the original card name beneath it?
Really nice job. Was wondering if you would accept commission for such a proxy ? I'm looking for a specific card I'm ufortunately unable to find in the right language/art/foil combination...
type whatever symbol you need, for example "ou" for the blue mana symbol in your rules text. select the "o" and change it to the light blue color in the template's color swatch. Select both the "o" and the "u." Open the drop down menu to select the font and pick magic symbols. Voila, you should have a nice, crisp blue mana symbol in the same layer as your rules text.
Your regrowth card looks amazing (0:11) but i cant figure out how to recreate the boarder you made. was it a different template or, did you go through the effort of actually editing the boarder yourself?
It's the same template. I separated the text boxes and the outline into different layers. Go to select > color range > click on the colored bordered, and then Ctrl X, Ctrl P. From here you can fiddle with the opacity and brightness/contrast of both layers til you get something that looks good to you.
This was dope! How much would you charge me to make a cool foil proxy of a card that I’d like to get? And how can I get in touch you directly about this?
Question. Ok late to the party here, how to you line up your cards and size them correctly to print. I made a bunch of cards in photoshop and exported them to PNG but Im a novice and dont know how to format them to be able to press print and have 6-8 cards on 1 page.... or format it so I can take it to a print shop to get them printed. Is there a png or something where you can either drag and drop images so they size correctly or do you all upload them to word resize them and then do that 8-9 times per page?
Hey! First off, great tutorial, thank you! Secondly, is there somewhere that you know of where we can get full arts of cards without having to mess with aspect ratios and such? google doesn't seem to be cutting it for me XD thanks again!
So glad I found this video, by chance do you have a good place to find imagery? For instance where did you get the art for the card in this video. Also is there an option for updating the artist part of the card so each card has credit to the artist who's image you proxy?
Question I got a picture that’s has white in the background is there a way to remove the white background or if I print it would the white become clear ??? Thanks
.01. Just make sure the whole image gets printed on, sometimes the very tops of the cards on the top row get cut off when printing 9 on a sheet. If that happens just do 6 images per sheet instead.
FedEx office had this really nice tabletop rotary paper cutter that I use for all proxies. Use that for straight edges and scissors for the round corners.
It's brilliant to use Google docs to get the images just the right size - but do you just save it as a word-file before printing it out, or do you save it as a PNG?
I know that this is an old video but does this work with other card games? I wanna make one for a leader card got dbstcg but I’m not sure if this will work
Didn't see how to add a mana symbol or activate ability in the rules text. Any way you could describe how? Specifically trying to do mana crypt's rule text. Thanks
