Today we are showing you how we create our Goat's Milk, natural, cold process soap, scented with essential oils and coloured naturally with Annatto extract. Our free Goats milk soap making recipe is included and is given at the bottom of this description.
We cover how to incorporate frozen Goat milk into your lye water solution and how to bring your soap to a trace before splitting it into three portions ready for colouring. We then move on to how to fill the mould and how to use the Taiwan Swirl technique to create a beautiful swirl within your soap.
Lastly, we show you how to cut the finished soap to show off the swirl and we discuss stearic spots, what they are and why they appear.
If you do wish to recreate our Goats Milk salt bar at home, here is the recipe that we created and feature in this video (the below quantities will fill a 5lb loaf mould):
Sodium Hydroxide 218g
Water 218g
Goats Milk 218g
Coconut oil 368g
Shea Butter 150g
Cocoa Butter 76g
Olive Oil 680g
Sweet Almond Oil 198g
Castor Oil 114g
Sweet Orange Essential Oil 27g
May Chang Essential Oil 27g
Cedarwood Atlas Essential Oil 7g

That is how I make my goat milk soaps. Frozen cubes and the ice bath method. I love that taiwan swirl.

You have read our minds! Coconut Milk soap is actually on our "to do" list for what to make this week, so hopefully there will be a video up on it within the next 2 or 3 weeks :-)

Many thanks for this excellent tutorial! I am planning to make a Clementine (Christmas mandarin orange) soap, with annatto infusion for colorant. Your beautiful Taiwan swirl is exactly what I need for it! If it comes out half as beautiful as yours, I will be right over the moon!🐄🌛 Wishing you a wonderful holiday season, and a new year of peace and prosperity! Keep up the good work, and know you are sincerely appreciated! ❤🎄🥰

That's what we thought - and it only took 3 days of shifting furniture about, stress, testing angles and mini arguments to come up with a set up that worked - haha!

I can't cut straight with those cutters either. I've tried everything including marked paper underneath so I know where I'm aiming for and it still didn't work but the wobbly version of the cutter is more forgiving. Fab video. Thank you
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
I am terrible for wonky cutting! Even with non-soap things like bread! Wayne hates it when I make a sandwich with un-sliced bread as he knows when he next goes to use it it will be on the diagonal slant :-D

Why not mark the loaf at both sides before cutting? That way it's easy to line up the cutter... ❤ from the Netherlands

What a gorgeous sounding `Soap Anne. I would imagine it has a wonderful creamy lather. You are extremely generous with your knowledge, and your videos are always so interesting and informative to watch. On the theme of Milks, I think a coconut milk would be good. Also, do you ever do Hot press soap? if so, it would be good to hear your views and see a video describing the two and the differences (if any) in the end product. Thanks again Anne, and of course, your very able camera assistant Wayne haha...Terry

Hey Ms Anne, to start out making my own, basically for my nephew who is allergic to all soaps in the stores, to keep costs down, can you use just coconut oil and shea butter, or are all the oils necessary? And thank you for sharing your recipes. Love from across the pond in Tennessee!

A mitre box would help you cut straighter; just need to work out a way to pad the gaps a bit, as they are a bit too wide and still allow too much leeway for the blade to go off course.

Nothing to do with this video but I have gathered my courage and got 3 flexi assessments from soap posh. Question, could you make a video about soap posh and the package for assessment for rinse off products, more specifically about the variation pack, UK only or Europe. Thank you honey x
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
Hi Stefania, what questions in particular would you like covered and for which products (soap or bath bombs etc). Obviously I couldn't share the recipe (I won't have it myself unless it is an assessment i happen to own from them) but I would be happy to delve deeper into their assessments :-)

Okay so I'm ready to jump into goats milk soap for the house. Is supermarket goats milk useable? I found oatmilk loaded with extras so I wasn't sure about goats milk. Thank you very much. I love all your videos no matter the format but looking very swish now 👍
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
Hi Debs, yes, we use supermarket Goat's Milk as it is near on impossible to find other sources of Goat's Milk where we live unfortunately. Just try and make sure it is full fat milk if possible and obviously the less additives the better :-) Good luck!

Thank you for this video, enjoyed the technique and your new set is very nice. I will say (and just observing, not criticizing) that it looks like you have to stretch out to work under the overhead camera - perhaps a bit awkward for you?
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
Thank you Debby! The camera angle may give the illusion it is a bit of a stretch! In reality it is not too bad, I do have to reach forwards more than before but the only thing it has so far caused inconvenience with was when I was trying to mix in some bath bomb ingredients by hand - getting my hands into the deep mixing bowl was a bit of a pain!

Interesting about the steric spots, I got those in my last attempt, I tried soaping at a lower temp to have more time to work with it, but then I think I over blended (so I rewatched emulsion spotting videos) and then when I added EOs it got super thick, so made no difference anyway! 🤦‍♀️
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany
Yes, stearic spots can be a pain! We don't tend to get them with most of our soaps as we soap at a higher temperature, but because the Goats Milk ones are done so low, they are much more prone to them! To be honest, they don't bother me too much, obviously I would rather not have them but if they do appear it's not the end of the world!

Lovely soap Anne. Also a gorgeous end result. Such an appropriate colour choice for the EO's used. I'd love to see more milk type soaps (oat and coconut and almond). I'd love to also hear your thoughts on colloidal oat powder as an additive.

Keep vinegar on hand to counteract the lye should it splash too!
