I'm making and sellig watercolors for a few months now. :D With mica pigments you're using this method is totally fine. But if you want to reduce the "waist" you could look for a small glass cutting board if you want. You can get as good as all mica from that with your palett knife. :D I tried mixing mica in a mortar with pestle (because I will not bring that sparkling mess near the normal pigments mixing surface) but it god bubbly. I use a small glass cutting board and the flat side of a drinking glass to mix the mica really good with the binder. :)
