Great work , great feeling as usual Brady. But why didn't u just add some more sheers or any diffusion material on the window at that area the harsh light comes to Sara's face from ? Wouldn't be more economic and effective solution? BTW the last light u added to shin the background lifted the result to totally new level ❤️❤️
@BradyBessette
@BradyBessette 2 года назад
definitely could be more gear efficient, but copying my answer to a similar comment above, hope it helps clear things up for my reasoning on this Hey there! So I did this because the flag would create a sharper cut from the hard light to fall right at her neck where I wanted it. I did this really for control. If I would've just diffused it from there, the line wouldn't be as sharp, and the diffused light would spill in places I may not want and reduce some contrast on the shadow side. So by cutting the light and then adding the nova with a grid, I had total control over EXACTLY where I wanted the soft light to fall; on Sara's face. I hope this helps!

Another great lighting tutorial! Just curious, why not just use a diffusion panel to soften the light from the 600d on the face, instead of flagging it off and then adding the Nova? Would the face be underexposed using that method? I could definitely see that having the Nova would give you more output and control to help you fine tune the light on the face, but would the other method work well if you only had one powerful light? Anyway, thanks for all your great work, I look forward to your videos every week!
@Visethelegend
@Visethelegend 2 года назад
Yeah I thought he was going to do that instead while watching the video. Maybe it was not enough light to light her face
@Matthew13tube
@Matthew13tube 2 года назад
@@Visethelegend That would be my guess too. It would have been cool to see it as a comparison with the final shot, but it was also great to see the way he did it. I know there are only so many hours in a day, and probably a million different ways to light a scene.
@BradyBessette
@BradyBessette 2 года назад
Just answered this question above, so copying and pasting my response, I hope this helps! Definitely not the ONLY way to do it, just my process for this shot. Hey there! So I did this because the flag would create a sharper cut from the hard light to fall right at her neck where I wanted it. I did this really for control. If I would've just diffused it from there, the line wouldn't be as sharp, and the diffused light would spill in places I may not want and reduce some contrast on the shadow side. All very well, and certainly looks good if she remains in that position, but what if the shot requires her to recline or she is joined by another person on the sofa?

then in that case I would adjust the lighting to target a larger area, or potentially add an additional light source!

Curious… why not just use a combination of silks and nets to just cut the harshness of the original 600d source falling on her face? Example: an open side net on the outside near the light to drop the exposure on her face a stop or two, accompanied by a silk on the inside of the set to diffuse the light falling on her face. I’ve never tried it but I would have thought that would be an easier way to reduce the need of a second source light.
@BradyBessette
@BradyBessette 2 года назад
Honestly that could likely work too, I’m curious of how many combinations of this would work and the looks they would give! This was just what I chose to do in the moment!

How would it affect the overall look if instead of flagging off the hard light from the 600D, if instead you diffused it. Maybe not as soft and not enough punch? I’d be curious to see how close you could get doing that and only using one light.

Why didnt you just soften the face part with a Diffusion material between the 600d and the face instead of flagging it?
@BradyBessette
@BradyBessette 2 года назад
because by flagging the beam we have control over where the hard light ends, and by using a gridded softbox we can control exactly where the soft light hits, rather if we just diffused it the spread would be a lot "messier"
@ojulale
@ojulale 2 года назад
To get the soft light on the face, could that also have been achieved using a half grid diffusion flag in place of the black flag and achieve the hard and soft light contrast using a single light?

3:20 I can see your aputure nova is at 12% output, I believe? Is it possible to achieve something similar to what you have here, with a much cheaper setup, but then at the max output for that light? I have one of these... "Neewer 288 Large LED Video Light Panel with 2.4G Remote Control, 45W 4800LM 3200K-5600K Bi-color Dimmable Soft LED" Which was £70 vs your big aputure lights which are £1k-2k I understand in many situations you will need much more output. But for a lot of "ordinary" situations (unhelpfully vague, i know), what is the viability of using something like this Neewer light? Or even multiple? Just thinking you could strap 4 together even in some big array and that'd be much cheaper than one nova etc. i get that that the nova etc have tonnes of other features that make using it better: settings, RGB, apps etc. I'm mainly thinking about how much output you can get for less money (and also having easy colour temp with the Neewer light, without having to use gels). Cheers
@BradyBessette
@BradyBessette 2 года назад
hey there! so yeah the nova I didn't need much at all. You can 100% do this with "cheaper" panels. I would suggest also if working with limited output to work on darker days or at sundown or night even, so you dont have to battle daylight as much!
