Great video! I wondered how I would get a decent recipe when I run out. I had went down to a local private school a couple years ago, at the end of the school year. I asked if the art department was throwing out any old stuff. They gave me about 3 gallons of Gesso, and were very happy to give some of the older stuff away so they could buy fresh for the kids. It might not always work, but I recommend giving it a try if you can! Schools throw a lot of good stuff away.

Wow! Fantastic tip, I paint on a very small budget and family bring me their unused house paints for my decorating so now I know how else I can use these half tins of paints. The Gesso I’ve just bought is going back. I love your money saving tips thank you 👍🏼

Well this is interesting. I already paint furniture using chalk paint which I make myself by adding plaster of paris to box store acrylic paints (flat) - I snag the mistints for dirt cheap whenever I see colors I like and store them away to use for future projects. I'll get a gallon of mis-tinted paint for $7 to $9 USD (full price $40-ish) while brand name chalk paints sell only 16oz for $25 USD! I am just getting into painting with artist acrylics and I had no idea that gesso was simply chalk paint. You literally just sent me in a full circle with this simple lesson, LOL. I certainly won't be spending money on gesso when I literally have shelves of chalk paint on hand already ... thank you for saving me more money! :)

For mine I ground up some chalk using a cheese grater, and I did end up using this acrylic paint I have. It was this cheap one from amazon that I can't paint with bc it's very runny (I was testing the brand), so I'm happy I don't have to waste that paint anymore now lol. My gesso has a bit of chalk parts tho that I can see on the canvas so it's not as ground up as it could be, but I'm still learning so I'll try to find out if that's not so bad.

Hi Clive! Ages ago, I saw one of your wonderful videos on making gesso & you had: 150 gm house paint, 100gm distilled water, 20gm pva glue & 30 gm powdered chalk. The main difference between that video & todays video was the pva glue. Are both methods equally legit? I’d value your views? xx

@@CLIVE5ART Have you changed it since? I saw a short where you used propylene glycol, titanium white acrylic paint, and chalk. Which is the best, most effective recipe you've come up with, not necessarily the cheapest.

When I began oil painting many years ago and primed my canvas I made homemade gesso with glue, baby powder and water. I love the house paint idea! I have tons of baby powder left over, Can I use baby powder in place of chalk?? You mentioned baking powder...so I'm assuming yes?? I switched to acrylic paints about 2 years ago and am just loving acrylic way more than oil. I had no idea I should continue to prime my canvas with acrylic. Definitely going to start!! Thank you!

Great video, that will certainly save me some money because besides being an artist I sometimes work as a decorator. Only thing I'm wondering is would it be advisable to add a bit of PVA when using the surface for oil paint?.

You can I would use a acrylic medium but ova works the house emulsion is ok and contains what’s needed to bond the chalk it’s up to each person to see what works for them i have had no issues tho

@Ciprian-Amarandei
@Ciprian-Amarandei Год назад
I was thinking the same but, it will have a reaction with water inside and harden, I didn't try, but I am thinking of mixing water with plaster, let it cure and then you have hard chalk, that you can make a powder using a "Pestle & Mortar" (the one used to grind stuff in chemistry or kitchen (garlic or pepper) ). I think chalk is just cured plaster

@@CLIVE5ART Clive, I’m even greener than a beginner! Today, I know next-to-nothing about painting, but I can’t remember when I was this excited to get going on something! My goal is to paint with acrylics as soon as possible. But, I’m not healthy enough to venture out for actual lessons, and it’s pretty obvious that I’ve got to learn some basics before I start ordering supplies. Oddly, I did learn about the importance of Gesso recently. I was very grateful to see your ‘recipe’ so we can make our own! I look forward to a taking a careful and longer look at the contents of your channel because I know I’m going to gain much useful, insightful information (that I probably couldn’t get elsewhere). Thank you in-advance, for teaching me more than I could do on my own when I was navigating my own way! So, now I’m going to show you exactly how little I know when I ask: if you could please give a further explanation re what you meant by “chalk and medium only no paint” re making clear gesso? Thank you for being instrumental in the enrichment of my life (I just know it’s gonna happen, lol) by helping me to paint!

I'm new painting, gesso doesn't make sense. You said it was to stop greasy hand prints. But grease will come through emulsion. I can't see how adding chalk will stop this?
@mariannemcginnis7274
@mariannemcginnis7274 4 месяца назад
Gesso is used to “prime” your raw canvas, if u are buying rolls of canvas, typically bought raw, and stretching canvas onto stretcher bars urself. The gesso will prevent the paint, and paint from seeping into the canvas. It seals the surface of textile fibers into a smooth and slightly absorbent surface to paint on. Many artists do paint on raw unprimed canvas, it is just a different process with different results. Good luck!
