i did custom framing for years and now retired. Glad to see this video and to show how easy it is to do your own picture frames. Thanks for sharing but please the middle one is a little upside down. Hard for an ole man to set on his head to enjoy.🤣

I bet you made yours a little fancier than these! That would be a fun job, I think. Haha I took Lucy’s original photo at that angle when she was laying upside down and when I printed it and turned it the other way in the frame, it looked weird. I kind of like that she’s a different way than the others 🤣

I can't resist pointing out that I make my own frames for MUCH MUCH less than a custom frame would cost. I just framed a print that was about 16 x 20 inches in cherry for about $15 ALL IN.

With cherry? Really?....isn't cherry expensive?

Appreciate you prefacing with explaining this project might not be worth undertaking, cost-wise, for some people and providing alternatives. Your channel is clearly centered around practicality and is just one reason why I love it. Also, I personally don’t mind smaller build guides like this as it’s still considered a “home” build in my mind. I also find it useful to watch your approach to various builds as ideas in them can be applied elsewhere. Simply put, I’ll watch any video you make, so keep ‘em coming! 😆

Haha I always have people telling me that my projects aren’t cheaper than just buying the thing (which is rarely true, but 🤷‍♀️😂), so I made sure to preface that in this case, it very well may not be. BUT, you get what you want when you make it yourself and to me, that’s worth a lot because I’m picky 🤣 anyway, I appreciate your kind words and I’m truly glad you enjoy the simplicity of the channel. Thank you so much for watching and following along 🙌 have a great weekend!

Nice frames ☺️ For cutting the matt board, you can buy a matt board cutter that slides along a straight edge and cuts the matt with a bevelled edge. That makes getting the cut straight a lot easier, and also gives it a really nice effect with the bevel.

So, there are only a handful of channels that I have "notifications" turned on. And of those, there are only a few that I will stop what I'm doing to watch when the bell rings. Yours is one. Why? Because I love your design philosophy and aesthetic, your building methods, and your attitude. Plus you have a very pleasant way of presenting. All that to say - from my perspective (and, I suspect, many of your subscribers as well), don't apologize for a video on picture framing! Heck, if you made a video about how to watch paint dry, I'd watch it... 😂 P.S. a triple-chip grind (TCG) blade on a table saw works wonders for plexiglas/acrylics etc.!
@WoodshopDiaries
@WoodshopDiaries 2 года назад
You are so kind. I really appreciate that! And I’m glad to hear you enjoy the videos and all the chaos I produce in the shop 🤣 I always aim to share the is stuff in a way that’s (hopefully) fun and encouraging vs too technical and overwhelming. I’m glad to hear it comes across that way. Also, I knew you could use a table saw to cut plexiglass, but I’m always a little nervous with it so I hadn’t looked into it too much 😅 next time, I’ll have to grab one of those blades and give it a shot. It would be much quicker than a circ saw 🙈 thanks for sharing!

I worked in a custom framing shop for several years in and after college-- any frame store worth visiting will happily cut your mats for you (without making you buy frames or other things), and at least where I worked, it wasn't that much more expensive than just an uncut mat board. There's definitely some skill and equipment involved that can guarantee results that look good. This is a thing that's really easy to mess up, and if you have to buy 2 (or more!) mat boards, that's definitely more expensive than a custom cut one! Also, it would not have been hard to convince me at least to cut the mats like that -- I love the "weighted" look, and even if I didn't like it, if a customer comes clearly knowing what they want, I was always happy to go with their plan -- there are obviously plenty of decorating styles, and framers know that more than most! That said, there is a TON of markup in the custom frames themselves, and it can definitely be worth it to build your own, especially at larger sizes like these!

OMG..i have been trying to figure out for a year how to make two custom frames without having to use a router..in which I dont have. This was much easier. I do have a question. I have 2 pieces of plywood that are 1/2 inch thick. I did some woodburning on them of two of my dogs. I wanted to frame them. What size boards would you use for the frame to inset the plywood and anything else you would recommend? LOVE the pet pics....
@WoodshopDiaries
@WoodshopDiaries 2 года назад
Yes!! I made a “fancy” picture frame years ago for a giant poster my dad wanted to frame and I cut a fancy edge and rabbets using the router and it took forever and requires a bunch more tools. Completely unnecessary 🤣 I love keeping things simple. If what you’re framing is 1/2” thick, you can build the same way and just inset the inside frame 1/2” from the back. Just set the plywood in place and add the turn button tabs right behind them…no need for plexiglass (unless you wanted to), mat board or cardboard.

I just stumbled across your video and preparing to watch. Really appreciate the comments I am reading here. My question is- After covid hit I purchased a polyester wall mural, 60"x90". All tips about mounting has mostly been 'tack it to a wall'. Ugh. I'm 63, not 16. How can I build a frugal frame that will allow me to turn over, say 1 1/2- 2" so it appears like a Wrapped frame. I dont want to lose much size and, unlike a weighty fabric tapestry, to simply hang this from one length of wood along the long top edge won't work. It doesn't have the weight in the fabric to look proper. I dont think so, anyway. Would appreciate any advice. Thank you for patiently reading this. P.S. Loved the tip about holding the tiny nails with a pair of pliers...🤦‍♀️ WHY did I never think of this before bashing myself?
