oh my gosh, i just found your video...THANK YOU....i have my Irish gran's books from the 1800's and have been loathe to do anything but shlepp them around with me for decades....with your help i cut the cover off of her school book Silas Mariner 1898 with a book plate photo of George Elliot. Whew. Had to put my head between my knees when i finished. ...btw...live with the choice is a great mantra....i'm now so into loving my Gran's books in a whole new way. thank you so much.

Becoming a used bookseller is an excellent way to get over that squeamishness. Folks, so many of these books are just going to get thrown away. Seriously, guys, a huge, *huge* number of books like this? They are destined for the book knacker. They get pulped. Nobody wants them, and nobody wants to pay to store them. Unless someone hauls them out of the free or 1 cent book box, they are doomed. So don't feel guilty about using them for crafts. An algebra textbook from the early 20th century has no better fate in store for it than this.

I have no problem using a book that has no literary or historical value. My first gutted book was a 1952 textbook on swine management. The world will not miss that book, nor will it miss an old algebra textbook. Ditto Readers Digest Condensed books.

Same here, nobody will ever look at those old books and they end up thrown away by the second hand shops most of the time. How beautiful that we use them to make journals that will be many more years around. I get so tired of the people that want to save all the books in this world, come on, it is just paper . Beautiful old paper (wink) Lets save the earth, animals , poor children etc etc , not books that have no historical worth. Having that said, nice tutorial TFS and happy sunday everybody!

I am with you Susan. I have had 7 unsuccessful major back surgeries. I hurt every min of everyday. But I do NOT let that get me down. Some days are harder than others. But finding Junk Journaling takes my mind off of things. Good Luck to you. And I hope your days get better.

Want to journal using my grand children's art gifts to their artist Grammy. Love your ideas. Just bought my first OLD book, a dictionary, with all the old darkened pages, at a garage sale for $1 :) Big book. Might use the binding on it for a gardening journal for 2023. Messing with an old math book, or chemistry book would not bother me in the least bit. Two of my MOST unlikable subjects during my informative years 🤣 Now, to EVER mess with a bible - a never, never - just can't go there 😵‍💫 But, GREAT video. Will probably watch the others too. thank you for the wonderful information on this subject.

Hi Cheryl! Absolutely! That would make a fantastic cover! :) I would seal it with, as you mentioned, a decoupage glue, like Mod Podge or a spray sealant. I think it would look incredible! :)

I never laughed out loud at a how to video. I almost forgot I have cancer. Thanks! And also didn't feel like I was listening to a kindergarten teacher. You didn't insult what little intelligence I have left! What I don't get is ...what do I actually DO with this when I'm finished? It doesn't seem like there is much actual journaling space..is it like a scrapbook? Maybe the use is as dynamic as the creation...P.S. It is easier going up the mountain. I agree.

Isn't there usually a hook-shaped blade in most crafter exacto kits so you don't have to slice blind into the binding? Otherwise a camping-style can opener might work

Hi there! Welcome to the journal world! You have sooo many options! Here is a playlist of different ways to make a journal - many techniques! ru-vid.com/group/PLcjAz1vLzdlbEyRy1NlY1jQ0NXDpA5iG2: But if that is not what you are looking for you may want to explore "altered books". This is where you remove some pages from the book so that you can decorate remaining pages! :) It's fun but also requires some hand work to cut out some pages. I do not have a video on this but just look up altered books on youtube and there is a bounty! :) Happy paper crafting!

I have a place by me where I live called "McKays" (they buy, sell, trade...books, games electronics etc.) But outside of the building they have 2 big wooden things FULL of old books and ALOT are hardback FOR THE FREEES🤗no limit on how many u can take‼️‼️It's all the books that they couldn't or didn't buy or trade and ppl not wanting to take them back home so they just throw em in the free bins...I've found awesome things... from the early 90s GARFIELD, PRECIOUS MOMENTS, LOONEY TUNES coloring books & Stephen King books...if u have one near u I HIGHLY SUGGEST IT❤

You can tint it w/ onion peels! Just boil the dry up onion peels in water, dip the fabric or leave it in, the longer the darker the colour will become -> light beige - caramel I vaguely remember Avocado 🥑 peels or it's ground pit -> magenta Tumeric -> golden yellow (in 100% cotton fabric or 100% silk! I'm not familiar w/ other types of fabric.

I Went to thrift store, dollar store, Walmart, & Joanne’s to do this. I cut the spines away very slowly. Worked great! I wish I knew how to show pics on here. I found the neatest cover. I will keep you posted on my progress.

Talking about "going down the mountain" i just had surgery on my butt and they had to take some muscle out, i was stuck in a wheelchair for a couple weeks when i started walking again, with a walking frame at first i was fine going up hill but going down i was so wobbly i thought id fall on my face. Also i climbed mt koziosko going up wasnt too bad but i slipped and slid all the way down. Taking off skin on my hands knees and elbows. So definitely easier going up!!!

Can you sub fabric glue for anything else?

Yes other glues will work like a good wet white glue but it will just take longer to dry and should be clamped in place

A totally odd comment now: - I think you sound like LP!!! An American musician, songwriter and much more. I think her name is Laura P something Italiansounding surname. I cant post a link to her here but check her out. My favourite song is Lost on you. But I really really think you two sound similar...I don't know where you from but she is New Yorker. Well a huge thnx for this video, I'm aiming to learn how to junkjournal. I just started to watch tons and tons of RU-vid clips with cardmaking Max 6 months ago. So I'm a beginner and I'm not good at all. But I don't have that many to send cards to and I started my creativity history with painting with acrylic. But I choose to quit because I have problems with my hands shaking. And it's not that great looking with shaky drawings hehe. Then I started to do bullet journal. Thought that was fun but eventually I found out that I put hours and hours on designing and painting the different months pages and sedgements but never had appointments or scheduled things to put in 😞 Been home a few years because of a surgery that went totally wrong, made me part disabled. So I didn't have places to go, or atleast not enough time to have use for a bullet journal. Then I started scrapbook cards... But NOW I'm leaning on junkjournal because then I can create FOR ME!!! And I don't have to have bad conscience for not enough ppl to send card to. Plus I can mix and trix with all kinds of Techniques and media's... And im sorry for my crappy english, I'm Swedish so english isn't my native language 🙃 Stay safe and take care all. It's a strange world we're living in, so much love ❤ but also way to much hate and violence...💩 Hugs from Sweden 🇸🇪

quick question...i confiscated my husband's youtube account, so, don't tell. lol. i would love to make a junk journal with some of the playbills, tickets, cards, postcards, memory stuff, etc. that i have, and some that my mom had. but, being stuck in storage for awhile, some of them are a little musty smelling. are they a total deadloss? or is there a way to make sure they r properly dried out or something so i can use them? thanks! trish
