In this video, Louise demonstrates 12 different quick and easy mark-making techniques.
The techniques demonstrated were developed specifically for painting large amounts of paper for a sea and sky handmade journal. And so are suitable for large papers and for the speedy production of many different papers for a beautifully handcrafted journal. There will be the full demo of the completed journal presented in a video but there is also the small sketch sea and sky journal already uploaded, this is the link to that demo;-
The demo gives you the permission to paint with whatever you have to hand and Louise uses kitchen equipment, glasses, a silicone basting brush and nylon vegetable netting. Really it is up to your own imagination to think of things that you can use to apply colour to a surface in whatever way you see fit, ENJOY.

I loved watching this. It was a very different approach to mark making than a lot of videos online. It's really inspired me. I love the honesty of your video, keeping in the full character, the clumsiness, and the processes through adapting a mark to make it different. I would love to see where these images ended up.

Many thanks for the lovely feedback, and thanks for watching the video. I used the papers to make a seascape book, How to Make a Sky & Sea Handmade Journal. Using stitched Hand Coloured Papers and Ramie Tape. the lik to this video is- Video link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--H0HmOoApWA.html 😀 I also use the papers and the mark-making tools to make jewel-like papers for my abstract collage. Of course, the other bonus from these processes is the slow-cooked development of all the techniques I have unlocked and discovered. Once you start to think like this, ideas seem to bubble up. Again many thanks for watching, have a lovely festive period and all the very best for the New Year.

I'm sure now that I am not alone to become immersed in getting down and messy and be in my element when creating, allbeit, not everything comes out a masterpiece, but having fun just creating is the most important and getting some gratification out of just experimenting, having a go and trial and error is key and every so often something wonderful happens, we find what we love and we keep going. Thank you for sharing your process, it was a joy to watch you creating some lovely pieces :)

Love the sea. Was born I think a hundred feet from it. The who city surrounded almost. The seascapes go from friendly rocks, to pebbles to sand and almost mud people do body masks with. I found that the realistic paintings didn't do justice to the scenes. By watching this video and others I see the sea and seascapes in a whole different way. Now a different feel, appreciation, thank you.

I also love the sea. I live in the Peak District in Derbyshire, where water takes on a very different persona. We have lots of rain and subsequently many wonderful clear rivers. However, I did live by the sea in the past and do miss it. 😊

Love your videos and your approach to mark-making and layering! I use Rives BFK 250gsm almost always when doing any sort of wet/dry mixed media work on paper. I wonder if this would be too heavy for the purpose of book making. I have used the paper in blank books that were post bound and intended as wedding/event sign in books. It adds a richness and elegance to those books. It is, however, only “soft-sized” and I wonder if you think that would be enough sizing to hold up to the type of application you are demonstrating here. So glad I found your channel, tfs 😊
@LouiseJannetta
@LouiseJannetta Год назад
Hi Susie, thanks your lovely support and enthusiasm. I use 240 gsm. in books all the time. I like good-quality paper, especially if I intend to add, embellish, paint, etc., onto the pages. The soft sizing will make it more absorbent so that if the paint application, print or otherwise is wet, it may bleed some, but all that can be used to your advantage. If you don't want the bleed then perhaps try the paint dryer. Please let us know how it goes. XX

I wish I knew what kind of paper you are using, as I want to make papers today.
@LouiseJannetta
@LouiseJannetta 2 года назад
I think you should just try with what you have. If the papers buckle you would be able to put them between two boards with a weight on to flatten them again. However, if it buckles then the pigments will flow into the depths of the buckles and this can be a problem, it can also be a bonus. Try some without too much extra moisture, good luck XXX

Hi, which acrylic binding medium did you use?
@LouiseJannetta
@LouiseJannetta 10 месяцев назад
Robersons Pigment Binding Acrylic Medium - Add to dry pigments (or pigment milled into a paste with water) to create acrylic paint. Also useful to mix into thin, dilute washes of acrylic paint to prevent the paint from being dislodged by further layers. This is not the product I use but a similar one with a good description stating that it is a medium used to bind the acrylic particles together when diluted. If you dilute acrylic paints too much, there is not enough binder to keep the paint stable.😀 It is similar to a gloss or matte medium, which has binding properties. XXX Hope this helps. Many thanks for watching X

What kind of paper are you using here?
@LouiseJannetta
@LouiseJannetta 2 года назад
Hi again Judy, I mainly used 220 gsm cartridge paper. It is like sketching paper. When you buy a sketch book it will normal have a weight grading for the paper in the sketch book. 220 is quite a heavy sketching paper it is often 180 gsm. But 180 gsm would be good enough. The only thing is that the lighter the paper the more it will buckle when lots of water is added.

@LouiseJannetta
@LouiseJannetta 2 года назад
Sorry not sure what you mean by copy paper, do you mean the papers one would use for letters and for home printers. If so that is a little too light but still useable, it will be susceptible to buckling when too wet.
@judyhyland682
@judyhyland682 2 года назад

In the US we make copies at the copy store on their printer. Or your boss might ask you to make a copy for their files. We must have different words for it. We use copy paper here. We use it a lot in gelli printing. I was going to make some decorative papers to use in collage and I think the copy paper is just a bit too thin.
