In this video we make tincture from the Lobelia we harvested a few weeks ago. Lobelia can be used in several ways medicinally but tincture is the most common form of use, and generally regarded as a safer way to take Lobelia.
The uses of Lobelia can range from just a supporting herb in a larger concoction for many ailments, to clearing/soothing the lungs, to produce sweat or vomit, to pain relief and easing tension in muscles. Lobelia's uses are many and in the 18th century was one of the most widely used herbs.
Tincture is easy to make assuming you have an understanding of the plant you're using, and requires few materials and just a little time.
Before making tincture from any plant you should know: How to identify it, how to harvest/what parts to use, what time of year to harvest, if the plant is safe for you to use. Things like medications you may be taking, medical conditions you may have, and allergies are some of the big concerns. So please research a plant you may want to make tincture out of, give that information to your doctor, and go from there before harvesting a plant and making tincture.

I'm mixing home grown and wild harvested lobelia,mullein,mint,coltsfoot,artemisia and white vervain with a pinch of red clover,plantain and self heal.For now my blend has tobacco in it but I'm slowly eliminating the tobacco and getting rid of this awful addiction.Bless you!

Lol maybe i'm just weird but after what you've said about metal utensils effecting the tincture it made me not want to use metal utensils anymore for eating. I think i'm going to use wooden from now on, lol. Thank you for this very useful video!

You're welcome man glad you enjoyed it. The reaction I refer to in this video is with metal utensils and vinegar which is a high acid content that can eat away at metal, possibly contaminating the tincture. It's safe for normal eating, but there is nothing wrong at all with using wood utensils for normal eating.

Good to know! I didn't realize you could mix alcohol and apple cider vinegar for a tincture. I found some wild Lobelia, but still trying to identify it down to the exact species.

Absolutely, with Lobelia the acetic acid helps to extract the Lobeline, the main active ingredient in Lobelia. What color flower does the Lobelia have, and how big are the flowers? Cardinal Flower, or Red Lobelia has red flowers, Blue Lobelia has Blueish purple flowers, and Lobelia Inflata has pale bluish white flowers. Cardinal Flower and Blue Lobelia grow much taller than Inflata and don't produce inflated seedpods. Hope this helps a bit Mona-Britt!

They're a pretty blue/purple color, more on the darker side, about the size of a quarter or larger. The plant itself is about 2-3 feet tall. I only saw the one. So I guess it's not the right kind to use. I'll have to keep a look out for L. inflata. Sounds like a neat plant.

Mona-Britt Folds It's Lobelia Inflata Almost Certainly.

Sounds like Lobelia siphilitica if its a strong shade of blue Have seen what looks purple-ish to me Thought that might be a cross between the strong blue (Lobelia siphilitica) and strong red (Lobelia cardinalis)

Dried lobelia or is fresh okay? Looks like dried on the plate, but it's not mentioned specificly either way.

What is the purpose of this as a tincture? To help asthma, to quit smoking or vomit? I would imagine dose would matter most to what the need is 🤔 Finally bagging my late harvest, in January 🙈

Excuse me sir, did you have information about other species of Lobelia genre could be used to do "lobelia tincture", like for example Lobelia tupa? Thanks!!

I know about Lobelia inflata and Lobelia siphilitica, otherwise known as Great Blue Lobelia. They can both be used similarly in this recipe. As for other species I'm not sure because I haven't used them, or seen many of them. Sorry I can't help but thanks for asking!

One or two under the tongue each time you crave a cigarette. Chewing on raw sunflower seeds reduces craving & boosts metabolism so you don’t put on a lot of weight while stopping cigarettes

You said in the beginning that you wanted a 1:10 ration of lobelia:menstrum but you only used a 1:5. You also topped it with a metal lid. I don't mean to be nit-picky here, just trying to be clear about the recipe and measures as I usually make all my own tinctures. I am making this for my own asthma. I'm off the medications but still have trouble wheezing at times. First thing in the morning and when I lay down are the times I have trouble breathing. So you see why I need to be exact when it comes to making a tincture. The dosage I can figure out on my own.

Okay, that's good you know that. I also said in the video that I'm not following that exactly nor taking exact measurements because of the confusing nature of doing so and it's best to adjust the amount to what you need. It's good you understand exactly what you need and how it should be made for you because that can differ from person to person. It's also why I include so much seed in my tincture because it is the most powerful part of lobelia. Thanks for commenting Baspreena!

Say friend, came back to revisit. I have a question: Does it matter that the "mother" in the vinegar is left in the bottom of the vinegar jar? I noticed you did not shake the vinegar before pouring it into the jar. In fact, I noticed that much of the mother remained in your original jar at its bottom, as you poured. Does this "mother" included or not matter? Thanks again.
@TrilliumWildEdibles
@TrilliumWildEdibles 7 лет назад
The mother remaining in tact matters as far as the purity of the apple cider vinegar itself. It has no bearing or impact upon the actual tincture itself or the chemical reaction that occurs between the acetic acid of the vinegar and the lobeline of lobelia. So it only matters if you want to use the purest apple cider vinegar. Mother or no mother the tincture will still be just as effective. I hope this helps and thank you for asking, if you have any other questions don't be afraid to ask!
