In this video we make Boneset tincture from the dried leaves and flowers of the herb. Boneset is a commonly found plant that's used frequently for colds and flus, rheumatism, gout, to promote sweating, and to aid in treating Malaria by boosting the immune system. The plant is rather bitter in taste but extremely effective in tincture or tea form.
Boneset can usually be found in low lying moist environments and should be harvested in August to September. The leaves, flowers, and roots can all be used. This tincture is rather simple to make:
Mix equal parts dried leaves and flowers, cover with alcohol in a sterile glass jar. Shake and put in dark spot for 4-6 weeks, then strain and bottle. For those who are interested the herb to menstruum ratio normally used is 1:5, though I don't usually follow those ratios. This tincture is no different.
Before harvesting and using any plant you should know how to properly identify it.

I am definitely making some of this during this year. Although I haven't been sick in over 15 years now, praise the Lord.

I have fibromyalgia and have found that if you have the pain you take some boneset tincture and rub it into the painful spot. The pain goes away within 15 minutes. Thanks for your video.

Good info. I've never seen blue Mason jars. Do you remember where you got them? I notice that darker jars are always recommended for tinctures and such to keep the light out. Boneset is such a useful plant. It's not native to our area here in North Georgia, or at least I've not seen it in my meanderings. I may have to order some seeds and raise it myself. Thanks again. You should have a lot more likes. Your channel is awesome!

I got the blue mason jars at my local Wal-Mart or Meijer, I don't remember exactly which. But they can be found online @ Amazon pretty easily, or maybe even a cooking or kitchen supply store in your area. Yeah Boneset rocks!! You should be able to find it in your area as it grows in most of the United States. Check wet, low lying, moist areas. Either by creeks, ponds, or lakes, or low areas that have runoff. For your area Boneset's flowering stage might be just about over so it could be a bit harder to spot. You're very welcome, and thank you so much for your comments and enjoying the channel!

+Trillium: Wild Edibles thank you, sir. I know exactly where I'll search for boneset, not far from my home. I can't find it in my Peterson wild edibles guide. Is it known by another name, perhaps? It's also not listed in my copy of Tom Brown's Field Guide to Wilderness Survival, which is surprising, considering how important the plant was to native Americans, and survivalists, in general.

Boneset will be listed in the peterson field guide to medicinal plants, probably not the edible guide as it tastes way too bitter for any kind of enjoyment for food or tea. Some other names of Boneset are Thoroughwort, Indian Sage, or Eupatorium perfoliatum. I'm sure it has more but I'm not aware of any off the top of my head. I hope you are able to find some, and I hope this has been of some help.

There's a chemical produced by the plant when it's fresh, it isn't found in the dried leaves and flowers

Can I ask what alcohol you use? And can you tincture mullein and bone set together? I never see it done and I’m wondering if there’s a reason.

I normally use vodka, but anything 40% or above will work. I generally recommend staying away from anything that's flavored because they can not only throw off your tincture but can make it go bad faster depending upon what's in it. You can use the two together or even make them together. The main reason it's not done more frequently is that it lessens the diversity of using them. For example there are a lot of times that Boneset is not needed but Mullein is, or vice versa. If they're mixed together you really limit yourself on when they can be used. It's best to make them separately and just mix them when needed. Hope this helps and thanks for asking!

@@TrilliumWildEdibles Oh gotcha, yes this helps so much! It's good timing because I almost bought a flavored vodka lol. And I did end up tincturing and drying them separately so that's good to know. It makes sense now that you mention it, because you can just combine either of the two when you take them instead of combining them initially. Thanks so much, really enjoy your channel.

I don't understand why you didn't fill the jar all the way. You said the ratio of dried herbs to menstruum was 1/5 but yet it looks like you did 1/1, can you explain ?
