Outstanding video! I've been doing the homemade MRE meals for a little over a year now. I'm in Florida, and just got hit with Cat 4 Hurricane Irma and those meals saved use from starving. Everyone should get started doing homemade MREs.

Also important rule for making your own mixes is, Account for the lowest expiration of any particular ingredient used in your mix. For instance, If your beans last 40 years, but the cream of chicken powder only lasts 3-5 years, then your beans mixed with this will only last 3-5 years instead of 40. Finding the right mixes that are inexpensive AND preserve the longest PLUS that your family will eat, is the tricky part. I make mixes for my family too. Chili with Beef tvp last 10+ years. But our Mac and cheese mix only lasts 5 years, so we need to remember to rotate. ;)

MSG is not a nasty chemical. It occurs naturally in mushrooms, tomatoes, seaweed, and Parmesan cheese.

I just put up 5 quarts of vegetable beef soup that I made. I freeze dried it in my large Harvest Right home freeze dryer. 5 bags that I just add hot water to and eat. They have a 30 year shelf life.

I've made it a regular habit that when I seal up foods in my vacuum bags, I leave them out on a shelf for two weeks to ensure I don't miss one that leaks later. Nothing like finding them bad when going to use them when that time comes, soon or years later.

Admiral Preparedness , excellent idea. I have vacuum sealed dry rice in the past and found the seal broken months later by a grain of rice having punctured the vacuum bag. At that point I started putting materials in open Mylar bags and then vacuum sealing them in the recommended vacuum bag and then into another bag vacuum sealing it twice. It's a little more expensive that way but not as expensive as losing your food to a broken seal. I haven't had a seal fail, when done this way, for two years.

Bev Volfie uses 'Brown Paper Lunch Bags' to store her Rice & such. Anything powdery like the 'Cream of....' base or Bouillon Powder, like liquids can clog up the Vacuum. So a paper towel or Brown Bag provides a barrier but still allows the airflow to deal fully.

Great idea! I had bag failure with beans. Whatever you're bagging doesn't have to be dry and crunchy with sharp edges to fail.

I dehydrate small ham chunks and if I can keep them long enough...(the guys eat them plain like jerky) then I will put them in my dehydrated potato soup food saver bag or in a rice meal in a food saver bag. That little bit of ham is just delicious!

I have 10 year old kidney beans, pinto beans, wild rice, etc. in food saver bags. The other day we took out 10 pounds of each, soaked them overnight, boiled for 10 minutes and canned them. Used a few cans for chili and it was awesome! If kept cool, dry and sealed, your food will last a long time! And no, I didn't use oxygen absorbers.

and if you have a garden, drying those veggies, such as celery, diced carrots, tomatoes, etc. Can be dehydrated so easily! My first experience of drying garden veggies was when my mother's home-grown celery made more leaves than ribs. So she said to pick the leaves, and put them into a brown paper bag, and set the bag outdoors in the heat. It took less than a day until they were crispy. Then she put them in baggies, and crumbled them into soups all winter. I have also heard of a cold frame being used during the heat of summer, as a dehydrator. The window top was lifted slightly, to allow air in and out, but it was almost shut, to allow the heat to build up. Clean screens on bricks made good dehydrator shelves.

to continue the savings, build your own dehydrator, for the price of a cheap commercial unit with 4 racks, you can build one that takes oven racks 8 at a time.

I use couscous and bulgar as the starch in my emergency meals, because they are historical journey foods, which are precooked, and only need to be rehydrated and heated. They take far less fuel to get ready than macaroni, beans, or rice. You can cook, rice, and beans the dry them in a dehydrator. 😊

I love that 'doohicky' cover for vacuum sealing my grains, etc in mason jars. Just NOTE... that there are two different sizes ... one for the Reg. mason jars and another for the WISE MOUTH mason jars. I usually buy the Wide Mouth jars because it just seems more practical It is so easy to re-seal jars ... plus you get to use them over and over again. Of course... IF one lives in an earthquake prone area... jars break ... so something to consider.
@peaceglory5973

I haven't tried this yet, but I read somewhere that you can buy a bag of those wide rubber bands at an office supply section of a store, then put those rubber bands around the jars, wrap it several times or use 2 rubber bands on larger jars. This should keep them from knocking against one another. Another idea was to place the jars inside of old or mismatched socks. I'm thinking the sock idea may be better for long term storage because over time rubber bands lose its elasticity. I'm just starting out with canning & a few days ago we had a 6.0 earthquake at Lone Pine, which is 95 miles away. We felt it good but no damage. The grocery store in Lone Pine had a lot of damage though, lots of broken glass and wine spilled everywhere.

I'm a seasoned homesteader/ pepper and to make this video even more cost effective buy classico spaghetti sauce use coupons and store sales to make it as cheap as possible the sauce is excellent even though it's not the cheapest sauce out there like store brand sauce. but the added bonus is the jar it is reusable and can accept ball canning lids.I dont can in them but they make excellent vacuum sealing jars you can even recycle used ball jar lids to make MRE style meals for a family. Also if you have the vacuum seal attachment and a food dehydrator dont be afraid to dehydrate canned goods that are years past the "best by date" like tomato paste, or carrots, spinach, green beans, peas, corn, and many other canned vegetables and dehydrated them at home and add them to your diy MRE'S.

Linda....I have seen some vids where people used mylar bags, o2 absorbers inside the mylar bags, then put the unsealed mylar bag inside the vacuum sealer bag and sealed them. The trick is to fold top of mylar bag over before you seal inside the vacuum bags if you r using powdered milk or any type of stuff that could get sucked into your vacuum machine

My idea: I seal and cut my food sealer bags so I have individual packets open on one end. I then make or melt store-bought ghee into a liquid state. Ghee = calrified butter.) I use a syringe to fill each packet and seal the open end. I now have individual packets of ghee for my bugout bag. It's stable for months.

Ura geenyus! You solve the problem for me I was probably on the brink of figuring this out because I'm already planning to buy dehydrater, I just hadn't thought of putting the meals together because I didn't want to spend the money on the food saver or the plastic bags that you have to buy for it - it's an added expense to me so I just don't do it. I use pastas that cannot possibly have any air space in them, in other words fettuccine Linguine Spaghetti .And to get the air out I dip the bag in a sink full of water, with one hand in the bag distributing the noodles to reduce possible air pockets, that pushes the air out of the bag and I seal the bag up - probly not as good as your food saver but... It works for now. My dry seasonings are all in their bottles, I have thought to put them in bags and some. I just had not thought to season meals and bag them yet. It seems like a ME thing to do but I just figured I would have my herbs & spices anyway.

Food Saver bags are expensive and not really re-useable -- they are designed to keep a freezer from sucking the moisture from frozen food so help prevent freezer burn. They are not really good oxygen barriers over the long haul -- Mylar bags + oxygen absorbers are superior to Food Saver bags for long-term oxygen-free storage. Vacuum-sealed canning jars are a good choice for storing food for under about 10 years -- but not good if you have to relocate -- they sre heavy to move and will un-seal if you have to cross a mountain pass and have a change in air pressure. When making up your own meal mixes you have to be sure that all the ingredients will re-hydrate or cook at the same time or you will have a mixture of under-cooked food (dried beans) and over-cooked mush (spaghetti pasta).

This is awesome thanks for the tips. Where did you get the dried chicken? Is there a difference between dehydrated and freeze dried foods? What I really want to know is if you dehydrate foods do they plump back up once wet?

I support you fully but for long term storage I prefer to use canning jars. You can never trust that dry grains spices and other dry item from the stores do not have lava and other live organisms. The process of canning allows you to bring the products in the jars up to 150 degrees assuring it is sterile.

How do you sterilize the cardboard before putting it in the bag for long term food storage? I would think that it would be a contaminate..?

Brad I just wanted to give you head's up... I packed my foods sealed vacuum bags. Here's the results. Back in 2009 I have been doing my food storage. I used a Vacuum sealer like you. What happens over the years the plastic leaches out into the food my rice went rancid and the Also Plastic is toxic for foods. I had to throw out so much food because it smelled horrible. Especially rice or grains. Also they became all stuck together and moist. This is not a good idea. Don't make the same mistake I made. I think that Mason jars and mylar are the best packaging.

Use Mylar bags if you intend to keep it more than a year.

Actually a better way might be to store your left overs. ie. separate into individual servings then dehydrate your left overs. Then food saver it.

Good job! Wish you had more recipes like this. I am not sure what measurements and other recipes to make. I am not sure what ratios would work for other recipes. I would like to be able to find freeze fried vegetables because I don't have a dehydrator.

You could probably seal it by oven canning it into canning jars. I'm enjoying y'alls videos.

I plan to start making some mixes and vacuum sealing, either bags or jars, maybe both. I just got my jar attachments for my foodsaver. Question: You had the two you mentioned with chicken and beef. Do you have the dehydrated chicken in their with the veggies? Or just the dried source flavoring of chicken and beef? I've seen where some people do dry those meats well but I'm still wondering about that success and storage time frame.

Diana Turner We use the flavoring- I don't think the dehydrated meats would last very long and stay good... but that's my uneducated first thought...

Do you freeze then dry rice and beans/pasta? Or can you just put a oxygen obsorver and then vacuum seal it?

also everyone seems to think you have to have a dehydrator to make dehydrated foods, this is false actually you have everything in a common kitchen needed to do so . over on 100-125 slightly ajar , a baking cookie sheet and whatever your drying check periodically and then bag and seal.

Great video. How long does the food last until you have to worry about the nutrients disappearing?

What I do for really Long Term storage is .. after I vacuum seal things in individual portions... I put them ALL in a LARGE, heavy mylar bag with oxygen absorbers (seal with an iron), and then pack that in a food grade bucket with one of those special seal tops. That's a bit of work but depending on the food being stored it can last up to 25 years.

your food saver bags are good but i suggest dry-packs Mylar Bags and 300cc oxygen absorbers for long term food storage .. also you're doing only the dry foods that require a LOT of water which in emergency circumstances isn't always available...

Ok, this may sound like a dumb question but the jars.....if you use the sealer thingy on them, does that give you the same result of actual canning? My mom used to can when I was a kid but I am scared of trying it. If the sealer works the same, that would be great.
