Today we are showing you how to make loose leaf tea with a strainer or an infuser. We have been a specialist tea merchant for over 30 years and sell over 200 varieties of tea in our shop in Covent Garden.
Strainers and Infusers can be used to make most types of loose leaf tea including green tea, black tea and oolong tea. The most popular type of infuser with our customers is a tea ball. This is a great infuser for using in mugs and tea pots if they don't already come with an infuser built in.
Infusers can come in a range of different sizes, shapes and materials. As you can see in this video, we have chosen to show you the two most common types used to make loose leaf tea which are stainless steel and bamboo.
Some samples of infusers and strainers stocked by The Tea House.

I must admit I'm a minimalist in this respect. I just pour the water on the bare leaves. When all the leaves float to the bottom, the tea is ready. With some varieties, I deal with twigs staying afloat, but that's rare.
@MajoroTom
@MajoroTom 3 года назад
how do you get the leaves out? or do you just let them stay in and the tea gets progressively stronger as it sits
@thzzzt
@thzzzt 3 года назад
@@MajoroTom Yes. The leaves stay in. For me, the longer the leaves steep the better, except for some greens, which can get kind of funky. The tastiest part is when the tea has gone warm and only the dregs are left. Now most Darjeelings can "bolt" or become bitter when steeped "too long", but heck, that's par for the course. I've quit sweetening my tea per diabetic concerns, and have learned to appreciate bitter. Get yourself one of those big pyrex (borosilicate) double-wall mugs. It's fun to watch the leaves unfurl, looks beautiful, and keeps the tea hot longer.

For herbal teas like rooibos or chamomile that would be just fine (Especially if it's an herbal blend to help you get to sleep as the longer it steeps the more of the chemicals which promote muscle relaxation and sleepiness will seep into the tea), but goodness a good stout black tea would get *so* bitter! I'm afraid I have a very small tolerance for bitter tea lol. To each their own, however! (๑•ᴗ•๑)づ♡

I use these to contain chunks or larger pieces of spices like Szechuan peppercorns within a soup so I don't have to strain it

Ah, ok. So you just pour hot water over the contents, let it brew for the time that it says (could be 3 mins or 5-10 mins or 10-15 mins), and it adds it to the tea. Thanks for the straightforward video.

Can I put the tea ball in the kettle while on the stove? Would the metal damage the taste?

I use the hot water from my Keurig machine is that hot enough to for the tea? I make loose leaf green tea?
@XxUchihamistressxX
@XxUchihamistressxX 4 года назад
Green tea should not be brewed with boiling water as it will burn the leaf and make it bitter. I believe green teas need to be brewed at 175°F for best brew.

Hello. Is there a mesh tea strainer that would work with orange pekoe tea from teabags? I don't want to use the bags but like the tea inside. I have a mug teapot that is called "The Brewt" but it's plastic( but it does work great with bag tea). I want to get away with using any plastics. Thanks for any suggestions.

Dear Tea House: Is it possible to put loose herbs/tea into a metal pot with water, boil -- and then strain into a cup?
@Theteahouseltd
@Theteahouseltd 3 года назад
Hi. The cast iron teapots are intended for brewing tea in so we do not advise to use them for boiling water. There are cast iron pots for the purpose of heating water in which are available in Japan but they are hard to find in Europe. However, a normal cast iron teapot retains heat very well so it is possible to brew herbal tea in it by pouring boiling water in it and then keeping it warm over a tea light. We stock some cast iron tea light holders for this purpose.

Hello. The tongs open about 3cm wide so you should be able fit in any type of tea leaves without any problem. www.theteahouseltd.com/infusers-filters-strainers~47-c/mesh-tongs~001097-p.html?mid=IN&m1=Mesh_Tongs&m2=5.0_cm

@Theteahouseltd
@Theteahouseltd 6 лет назад
No. Stainless steel does not add any taste to the tea. That is one of the reasons it is widely used in tea strainers.

A lot of cool down here? Cups do not seem prewarmed, and the infusers take a fair bit of additional heat away - being good heat sinks... Comments please? Just want the advice of experts to help me understand.
