THIS IS ABSOLUTELY INSANE! Medieval 2 Total War is by now a 17 year old game, but which somehow manages to blow my mind all these years later, and it's all thanks to the work of the talented and passionate modders. Just imagine what an ACTUAL Medieval 2 Remastered could be like!
By combining the mods of Freecam and the Stainless Steel Historical Immersion Project, alongside my very own reshade preset settings, I've remastered Medieval 2 Total War to the point where it's literally better and more modern feeling than ever. The game both looks and feels fantastic, and if you want the exact same experience, then I got the goods for you right here at the bottom.

To be honest, I want Medieval 2 Remastered more than Medieval 3. The 2006 graphics are charming to me, so all it really needs is the better camera controls and the advanced unit movement Rome 2 gave us.

yeah, better camera controls on both the battlemap and the campaign map would fix a lot of things. I'd like a slightly modernized UI as well I think (at least let me quickly toggle HUD if that's not the case), and opening the game fully up to modding even more so than it is now, much like Rome Remastered has been

I am the modder, who made the Western Unit Overhaul some 8-9 years ago, including a complete roster from peasants to late era knights. I was frustrated looking at the low poly potato heads in the original game. Glad to see the 3d models and textures appear in the more popular mods like SSHIP. Currently working on the Dawn of Conquest v2.0, a complete overhaul set in 100 years war period.

The fundamentals of Medieval 2 blow away every other total war game that came after it. Empire - Shogun 2 was a great era but Medieval 2 just has such a strong foundation. It's not tedious to play with every mechanic slotting nicely into each other, it's very moddable, the soundtracks slap, the atmosphere and sound design is superb, and it's just bloody charming. Games that make their worlds feel alive, consequential, and real are the ones that are universally loved and praised by fans. Everything Rome 2 onwards just feels like an overly polished and cookie cutter cardboard cutout designed by a big corporation that peddles a culture of people not enjoying or taking pride in their work. Every game that I have really enjoyed since I started gaming in 2010 (From Battlefield 3 to RDR/GTA to Rainbow Six Siege to The Witcher 3, to Desperados 3, to Jedi Fallen order, to Baldurs Gate 3 etc), all have this common link that Dev teams making them had the freedom and funding to live out their passion. Current AAA companies are not the place to look for these kinds of games anymore.

Attila is an underrated masterpiece. And Fall of the Samurai remains my favourite Total War. However I have to agree in something, I like how Total War innovates in each game more than any other series, but they shouldnt just abandon old features for new ones.

I would play devil's advocate and say that the Warhammer games are really a work of passion, Troy was also a work of passion from a very small team that had never developed anything. And even three kingdoms, that obviously wanted to capitalize on the Chinese market, included an amazing Diplomacy system better tha anything before. I hate Medieval 2 worship, there have been so many improvements that abandoning them to go back to 2007 feels ridiculous. Even Thrones of Bretannia had a great siege level design that could be implemented in a Medieval 3. Yet with Total War becoming a yearly release like Assassins Creed I have little faith in future games. I like CA Sofia, they feel smaller and more charming, even if I hated Troy.

@@gerardotejada2531 Unfortunately CA are just very bad at bringing good mechanics from previous games into new ones.... I haven't played 3K TW, but everyone says it has the best diplomacy system.... so why isn't this system transplanted onto pharaoh? Empire had a cool trade system where prices would change based on the supply / demand of that particuar trade good. Dissapeared, never to return. Visual armour upgrades from Medieval 2... The list goes on and on.

I played the Stainless steel mod years ao along with many sub mods.. bit of pain to install but we'll worth it once it was up and running. Looking forward to the review of the updated one..maybe you could do an installation video on how to install the mod and all the extra content mentioned here..must say it looks very impressive. The greatest thing about M2 is that units have actual weight that you can feel, physics play a BIG part in battles, using heavier units (especially cavalry) to push lighter units out of formation feels so satisfying. Not to mention that a really good cav charge will make your peepee go hard in a way that no other TW game ever made you again. After M2 cavalry feels paper light and infantry just moves so fast and they barely keep formations, it is really sad.

Been playing SSHIP for a long time, great mod that started out as a Sub mod for Stainless Steel. Another Sub mod is Titanium . Haven't uploaded a SSHIP campaign yet as it really is a lot slower paced than nearly every other Med 2 mod out there. But it's awesome for personal playthroughs.

Yes, you can with the click of a key in the reshade settings, you just have to configure it in the overlay settings :)

I think in Total War armour should work the way it does in Diablo 2. It has a certain chance to just nullify damage. It could be balanced by armour getting damaged as battle goes on. Then Defense stat goes over it as like a warriors ability to dodge and block certain meele attacks. That would make battles bit longer and Archer spams less viable ( specially in newer Total War games)

I go back to Medieval 2 every so often and by far my biggest gripes with the old game that I'd want fixed: - Unit movement is buggy as hell, particularly in cities. Units ignore orders, attack the wrong units, move to the wrong place, simply freeze etc. - Unit placement is very poor

I am literally in shock at how good this looks. I'm actually really glad that the community did this. And I won't even be looking at the one that creative assembly does because they will most likely create something that's like 50 GB or more and will have Bloom and fog effects overdone and too much clutter that'll just get inside your eyes and not like you focus on the battle. Not sure if you can help, but free cam doesnt work? i installed it 100% as directed in the instructions but when i run it, it says theres no application found and shutting down in 6 seconds. It apparently doesnt read medieval 2 total war for me so it doesnt activate

Stainless steel and its historical immersion project turns Total War Medieval 2 in to a unit vs unit battle, do not recommend if you want historically accurate BATTLES, not just arms and armor.

Is there no mod out there that buffs gothic knights for HRE? 😞 This made me so sad when i played it last time 5 years ago That knights in PLATE ARMOR loose against old feudal knights with swords... which are not/shouldnt be armor piercing And their Zweihänders also didnt do their job :(

LOVE me some medieval 2. It was the tail-end of my peak TW fandom. Mods can give you anything you missed in the vanilla experiance. (for example, I was super bummed about how rickety and raggedy W Rome looked, even if somewhat historically accurate) Overall, it's a GREAT game. Probably my most played TW after Rome 1 and Shogun 2. (if we don't count LOTR mods for medieval 2)
