As a new homeowner, and someone who dwells on the details, your content is incredibly useful. I watch a lot of RU-vid guides, and only yours makes me feel I could actually do it. More please! :)
Cuprinol Shades is briilliant. Just painted my 20 year old oak front door in urban slate, 3 coats in one day and it looks fantastic, better than my neighbours new plastic door.
I love watching your videos, two things stand out, firstly you have a great deal of passion and secondly you work with a lot of pride..........keep it up.
This is amazing. I remember making one of these on a 6 week Carpentry course a few years back and I've still got the Planter in my Garden today. Because I really enjoyed Carpentry I've recently started doing a Level 1 Diploma Carpentry Course in College and its going great. 😊
Brilliant job, I made and painted my potting bench and used Cuprinol shades 2 years now and it still looks great. I painted in doors and we couldn't smell any paint odour. So I think it would make a great bathroom paint.
What a beautifully pleasant 9mins of woodwork. Calm voice, no patronising, just good vibes all round. I wonder if a primer prior to assembly would be an overkill ? Oh and I've clikcked and ticked ! Big Sufi Love from up norf!
maybe a good idea to help protect the timber better. I have just finished putting up some cladding on my fake garage door and I painter all sides before fixing to give better protection - video out tomorrow!
I guess I'm an advanced DIYer, like yourself, so already got a fair idea on a lot of your stuff. But every day's a school day, and you've come out with loads of useful tips - would never have dreamt of folding the liner over a small batten - great idea which I'll be 'nicking'. Cheers
The more I know and practice, the more I realise that there is loads of tips and advice that I still haven't come across yet. Please take as much from my vids as poss and others
Thank you for the warning about those dangerous cucumbers. First thing I did was go into the fridge and throw mine out into the street! New subscriber from an ex-pat in the US. Love your content and style, can't wait to binge on the rest.
Well thank you very much. I spent many years as an Expat in the Middle and Far East watching UK channels - very strange you are now doing the same with me! Welcome aboard
for the plastic lining, best bet is pond liner from Screwfix - Huge roll for £15 odd and it'll do 4-5 planters. Doesn't fade, crack, uv stable and is designed to deal with constantly wet environments. Fab vid.
Another cracking video! Discovered your channel the other day and am now binge watching everything. Love the ‘changing rooms’ style intro and your delivery too - relaxed, not pompous know-it-all like others. Thanks for all the tips!
Just found you, a really professional presentation, easy to follow and great projects. Thank you for your time and efforts in making these great videos, much appreciated and needless to say subscribed 😊👍
For painting may I recommend the Wagner Universal Sprayer W 690 FLEXiO. It comes with 2 spray heads ideal for big and small jobs. The sprayer would ensure every crack and crevice is filled with paint and multiple courses can be achieved as the paint dries really quickly.
I often use proplex inside my raised beds to protect the wood, never thought of the plastic sheet. I suppose its like pond liner. I like the idea at the top of having a bead to wrap it over :) nice job
Well presented vid. I am going to make a long trough version of this design using free pallet wood. I will brush or spray all cut parts completely with two coats of used engine oil ( any local garage free ) before assembly. Finish with undercoat then Cuprinol. Used engine oil alone is a nice finish, dries quick, odourless and plant friendly and no liner needed. Note sand or plane the top overlap edges to bevel them, looks better.
ohh, good to know the cuprinol shades works well - i'm making a log storage thinggy for firewood right now, out of leftover fence posts and pine 2x3s, and I was just looking at buying that paint. Will definitely be getting it now.
Really great video mate. Unless my maths is wrong, the only slight gotcha from having no timber at all is the wastage. You need 6 x 2.4m timbers. The last timber you only use a small amount so you end up with about a 2.2m offcut.
this is fantastic and exactly what i was looking for. I have just made a built in wardrobe and have a load of 3x2 left over (alot, lol, dont know how as made a plan but hey ho) and was thinking of making a planter but needed an idea. Upon searching RU-vid yours was by far the best design! Glad you put the measurements in too and like that there is no wastage. thank you so much really helped us out. Browsed the rest of your channel quickly too, love it and have subscribed.
The planters look great, your guide is easy to follow and a pleasure to watch. I picked up a stack of cls timber today and will get to work on the planters this weekend. My only variation might be some handles below the top shelf. Seen the trellis, will be watching more, thanks.
Decided to make one of these as a first project, using the cls timber I have in the garage/new workshop. Being of a certain age, metric measurements are not second nature to me, and it wasn't till I started that I realised that what I have are lengths of 2x4, not 2x3, but cutting all the pieces on the chopsaw that I got for my birthday a couple of weeks ago was a doddle, and they all seem to fit together nicely. Just a shame I didn't have any screws that were long enough. 😄. Got to wait till tomorrow now, for a pack of 120mm screws to arrive from Amazon. Looking forward to finishing the project and am enjoying the videos, thanks Stuart.
As others have said, I'm pretty much racing through all of your content at the moment and adding almost every video to my "must try making at some point" playlist! Need to sort my "workshop" (garage) out first but once that's done, I think this will be my first project!
Great video and project. Loved it. One suggestion I have is you you buy a plastic square planter of roughly the size you want then you can build the wooden planter around it (them) so in the end you just drop in a perfectly fitting plastic plant pot/liner which saves all the faffing with plastic membranes. Cheers
Great video, recently discovered your channel and am racing through your content. Love the tip about folding the membrane to conceal the batons. It’s just such a shame you chose to plant those conifers in them!
The fold over tip reminds me of my mother sewing. I'm terribly sorry about the light green conifers from B&Q but they are cheap and available. I'll try to be better in future videos!!!
I’m OCD and so would’ve painted the inside too before putting the plastic on as extra damp proofing. Not a criticism ( I love your channel ) it would’ve haunted me personally not to do it. I’m going to build some of these planters in various sizes. You inspire me and it’s costing me money 😂🤣😂 great video 👍
Thank you. As a tip (to help your OCD) paint the inside with Bitumen based black paint (Toolstation) and you will get an even better, long lasting result!
Never under estimate the cunning and savagery of common vegetables, especially cucumbers. Nasty little devils, cucumbers... great video, keep 'em coming mate. New subscriber here.
Thank you! No, I've been running construction sites for many years. I think it's the way my brain works - keep it simple and then even I can understand it!
3 x 2 nor 2 x 3 always the larger dimension first unless you're in America for some strange reason. That's what I was taught as an apprentice many years ago Apart from that grammatical error as always a first class video
It would be nice to add a picture of the planter i built using the idea and guidance from this video, but that does not seem to be an option on youtube comments. My wife wanted a planter to fill the gap between ourselves and our neighbours, modified your design to make a longer and slightly narrower planter. My wife is well pleased with the result. :).
I make hexagonal planters in the same way, but when I first started I couldn't work out how to hide the screws, dowel plugs, filler etc then the light bulb moment. I wish you made this video 15 years ago
Damn cucumber. Cats've been trying to warn us about them for years. Did we listen??? NOOOoooo! 🥒🙀🥒 I'm a newbie to your channel & I loved your video - thanks! 🖐😷
Very nicely done and a wee bit unusual in the choice of timber and design. Certainly an easy build and even possible without any power tools. Quite expensive in materials mind you - despite your careful sizing to avoid waste. That said they look great once finished and with regular re-painting ought to last well. I am a recent sub and I am enjoying working my way back through your catalogue. Your videos are a good watch and the care you take with builds is impressive. All the best.
Recently came across your channel and love love listening to you talk.. from the states so to me you have an accent..:)) and your funny :)) and I learn some new stuff .. thanks :)) just got to sub now.. just got to. :)) ok get on with it.. :))
