Great interview and loads of wisdom! I, too, have been blessed to be able to support my family through woodworking. However, I didn't realize there was such a large market to monetize the sale of pens. Great work, and excellent idea reaching out to the financial advisors! I bet they feel like a million bucks handing a client a custom, perhaps even locally-made, luxury pen. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Dan, I was as surprised as you when I learned how large the pen market really is. Also, congrats on finding a way to support your family through woodworking!

here's several ideas to consider before you begin your own woodworking business are you likely to have help from your spouse? Are you someone who is self-motivated? Will you stick to the plan? Do you have the funds to begin? (I discovered these and the reasons they work on Enata wood system site )

Another great way to make money making a tool, like say, a musical instrument, or maybe tool for other woodworkers. Get someone who already has a name to buy your product, or maybe even give it to them for free. I can tell you for sure that people will buy a tool based purely on what their favorite artist/craftsman prefers. If you where to build a guitar for yngwie j malmsteen or someone you would certainly sell a couple of them to his fans for example.

If you want more education (GREAT!) and are not ready to go to begin a 4 year degree then, yes a community college is a good choice.
