Good tips..I worked for 3 years at Lowes in the cabinet and appliance department. That need is required more then I thought. One time I did alter an upper cabinet for customer on my own time. That was a nice little payback. Thanks for sharing.
My son does this type of work on high end homes, The problem with advertising to the public is the average homeowner wants it done for less than $100. Keep up the great videos.
Then tell that homeowner to get stuffed. They have no clue how much it takes to make something look right after cutting it down to fit their new appliances.
I did many jobs like this when i worked as cabinetmaker installer. I once had 3 calls in one week to rebuild cabinets to accommodate new fridges. Like you say, the old cabinets cannot be sourced, even if you could, they are stock sizes, and likely no available in the size you need. I remember thinking, if i advertised for this service there could be a lot of work. Of course some cabinet door styles are easier than others to resize. At the end of the day the customers are happy, because not many people will take this job on. And it is not that difficult for a woodworker with a basic set up. I never had a hard time charging my time for services like this. An extension to this business plan could be simply adjusting doors on euro cabs, and rebanding edges. Many 10 year+ old kitchens can use a little fixing up, that the average homeowner cant do. Many just need to add to functionality, doors and drawers that don't work right will drive people nuts overtime. Not everyone needs or wants the front cover of homes magazine. Big money?? For a woodworker yes! Groceries and bills etc.. doing what you like at your pace. Like you say it is a niche many or not in, where competition in actually building new cabinets can be tough. Great video! Keep them coming.
I have a friend who makes money on projects he does. Why; because he has 45 yeas experience and doesn't take normal jobs. He for instance often makes blades for his shaper for special trim the customer want. He is not interested in work on kitchen cabinets etc. Basically he now only does jobs he is interested in doing.
