In parts of Asia #mooncakes are eaten during the #MidAutumn #Festival, a holiday celebrating the harvest and family. I ate mooncakes on occasion as a child and today I'm going to attempt to make them from scratch using a traditional mold I found at the market. 🥮 Let's do this!

Yes! I grew up watching Sagwa then Wendy Wu and they both showcased the mooncake. I had wanted to try it and I finally have. It's delicious! I prefer the one without the egg, however.

Most storebought mooncakes use white kidney bean paste as a cheap substitute for lotus seed paste, so that's probably what you'd had when you didn't taste lotus seed in the previous cakes! I actually enjoy the bean paste more, myself. The cakes I've had with salted yolks in the middle also usually have a slightly runny yolk somehow. The salty richness of the gelled yolk mixed with the sweetness of the surrounding paste tricked my mouth into thinking I was eating something with melted caramel in the middle. I found out I love mooncakes this year, and sorta went on a binge. 🙃

Bean paste tastes awesome. i had real lotus one time and the flavor is very... Unique to say the least. Not a flavor i would break my neck to find honestly. Tea, dessert, food... Lotus is not my top 50 flavors...

the first time I ever heard of mooncakes was when pbs kids had this lovely animated show entitled "Sagwa" it was so cute and it made me really learn to love and appreciate Chinese culture even at 10 years old. such nostalgia and good memories!!!

Love how these turned out! Traditional Cantonese style moon cakes are actually taller. And as you mentioned, the character on the mould is “double happiness” because this mould is actually to make traditional wedding cookies, not actually moon cakes. They’re called 龍鳳餅 or 嫁女餅 (bridal cookies/pastries) - traditionally presented as part of the betrothal gift to the bride-to-be’s family by the groom’s family. I had that when I got married. Thought I’d share that little tidbit! Happy mid autumn festival!

Many cultures celebrated by going out at night with candle-lit lanterns and greeting friends and family. I remember some of these lanterns got very fancy and elaborate: rabbit, pumpkin, goldfish, dragon, or butterfly shaped. This festival was also a time to give thanks for a bountiful harvest during the autumn. As an alternative to the heavier lotus paste based cakes, a lot of trendier recipes have pastel colored mochi based crusts with fruit flavored centers. Very traditional recipes used lard in the lotus paste instead of oil too. I am amazed Emmy and thank you for sharing this wonderful video.

There are a lot of mooncake flavors but I really love the white lotus w/ 2 eggs. Hahaha. Recently, here in the Philippines, one of the chinese bakeries released a Chocolate Banana Mooncake, Pandan Mooncake, Mochaccino Mooncake, Ube Mooncake, and Durian Mooncake. I only tried the Chocolate Banana one and it was so good. The paste, I think, was mung beans with banana flavor or actual bananas and it was filled with oozing chocolate. Hahaha.

To be honest most people i've gotten to know here in China also dont really like the taste of mooncakes, but all just eat them because its tradition.. I agree, im not too fond of the flavor. Its just sweet, especially the ones with bean paste in. But the peanut flavored ones are quite nice. But yeah as you said, they are SO DENSE, it seriously feels like eating Lembas Bread from LOTR lol, you just need 1 bite to fill your stomach.

Try using a whole seeded lychee for the moon. Wrap it with mochi or unsweetened rice flour dough. Then use rough ground black sesame, blackberries, and a splish of rose water for the filling. It's a filling a friend made when we were in middle school because she didn't enjoy the traditional ones :) Edit: Just cook the filling until you can leave a clean line on the back of a spoon, the chill. It should be jammy and slightly sticky. Song (Her grandma called named her something I can't type, so we all called her this) made them twice and gave me the notes for it XD no cooking times or measurements though!

In Honolulu a Chinese bakery sells mooncakes made using coconut. They also have mooncakes where the outside portion being 'mochi'. These need to be kept refrigerated.

Mooncakes were always really fascinating to me. Now that I live in Copenhagen, we have a lot more asian grocery stores here. Maybe they'll have lotus paste, but if not, I think a bean paste will work too. The only tricky part would be the lye water. I tried dissolving both baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and BAKED baking soda (sodium carbonate) in water when making noodles, but I don't think it had the same result. I'll dig into it a little more and maybe try someday :) i know one of the asian stores actually sold moon cakes, but they were incredibly expensive.5 dollars for just one moon cake and a box of them was 30$ . But I might cave in today :) Girlfriend and I are celebrating our one year annivesary and we're going to a chinese buffet too, so might as well try some mooncakes. Cheers from Denmark!

I think the most surprising surstromming tasting i saw on youtube was the Ashens one. I expected him to play up the gross factor but he opened it underwater properly and served it on flatbread with the correct toppings, and he and Barry both were willing to give it a fair shake and Barry even tried a second bite. They gave it a pretty thorough (and not wholly bad!) review despite being so overwhelmed by the stink!

Hey Emmy! From what I know, the Mid Autumn Festival 中秋節 in Chinese, is set based on the Chinese calendar, which is a lunisolar calendar, unlike the Islamic calendar which is purely lunar. Hope this help ^^

kinda sad the fact that our family doesn't really eat this cake anymore because... you know diabetes... high cholesterol... hypertension... *sigh* well i can eat it tho, but it is no fun eating it alone :(

My family worked around the high cholesterol thing by splitting a single mooncake with everyone. So everyone had a sliver.

Actually recent research has shown that eating cholesterol containing foods in your diet don't increase your cholesterol levels. In fact the initial research that the idea of eggs etc increasing cholesterol levels in the blood have been re-examined, it turns out the data was actually really weak and has proven be unreproducible in further testing. The new research is really new, as in earlier this year new, I'm sure you'll be able to find it online.

I had a friend with the same problem in college. She swapped out the over-sweetened paste with black sesame mochi with only 1/4 of the original sugar and used a lychee as the moon :D

omg i was modeling in shanghai back in fall 2015 and luckily was there for the autumn festival and got to try mooncakes from all types of vendors in shanghai and beijing during the national holiday and EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS. china inspired me in so many ways and i would move back in a heartbeat. you make the best vids emmy!

Thank you for going in depth on the meaning of the holiday as well as the ingredients and symbolism of the cake! One of my best friends is from China and at her restaurant she is receiving lots of moon cakes from her vendors. I normally see them during Lunar New Year, so I was curious as to the occasion. She told me it was sort of a middle of the year celebration, but her English isn’t the strongest so she wasn’t too sure how to explain exactly what it was. So thank you for providing me with more understanding 💕
