That's awesome. I just started trying to make my own lures. I've made a few rattle trap style crankbaits, as well as one that I modeled after the "river rocker" But now watching this has got me wanting to try some like you're making.
I had been trying to get the concave mouth on my lures using a lathe, but with a skew chisel. Not easy on such a small piece, especially when trying to carve around the tailstock live center. They come out ok like this, but your method is so much better. I just ordered my own rotary burr. Thank you for the tip!
The one in the video is a 3/4 inch diameter ball rotary burr. I also use a 1 inch diameter for the larger lures.These are double cut high quality carbide cutting burrs.
Kermett, you make great lures. You also got me started in lure making when I bought your Ebook and am still referring to it. I am getting better as it does take practice.
Very neat job , .......but the tool's diameter must match the lure blank dia. , I guess , .......I'm using oval router bits on my "Dremel" , ...takes a bit longer and requires some fine sanding afterwards , but this way I can also furnish somewhat irregular cuppings . Cheers , 61diemai
Arrrgh I really, really need to get a chuck for my lathe, lol. Everything I've done has just been between simple, pointed, live and dead centers, from nightsticks to musical flutes. I could get away, for now, with a drill in a vice or maybe my drill press.
thats one sexy popper, thanks for sharing. can you make a video on how you put the thru wire on these lure.i've always wondered how the tail and belly hooks are install on these types off popper on the thru wire construction.your knowledge will be put to good use.BIG THANK YOUS to you.
R u serious?! Why didn't I think of that?! I've been using my dremel all this time, I mean, it comes out perfect every time, but this is way easier. My old man has this tool in his garage and it's new covered in some type of wax or something. Definitely gonna give this a try. Thanx for sharing!
i have 2 questions... did u use a varnish on the body of the lure cuz i noticed it was a differnet texture with the paint or was it just from the paint? and my other question was for the eyes. How did you make the holes for the eyes and what did u use to fill the eye holes 3D eyes you had in the painted lure? Thanks for your help.

yes sir can u use a 3/4 in round burr ball on wood that's just a little smaller than the burr itself and still get good concave face or does burr have to match up with wood like 3/4 in burr 3/4in wood
+Jimmy Anderson Yes you can but the depth you can cut the mouth will be less than the diameter of the burr. What you can do to make a popper mouth less than 3/4 inch diameter is to use a 1/2 inch diameter burr
Yeah that one is a fancy one. I found one for 7 dollars it seems like the one u use on your video is different. The one I'm talking about looks like the one on your videos do you have those and do you have different sizes?

+Blake Rogers two possible tips. first try slowing your rpm of the burr in the lathe. second if you are using a 3/4 burr ; first drill a starter hole with a 3/8 inch bit at least 1/4 inch into the face of the lure.let me know if this helps.
