Getting from just practicing a scale or an arpeggio to the point where you can actually use it in music is quite difficult, and something that a lot of people struggle with. You want to set up your jazz guitar practice in a way that will actually help you get your exercises into your playing as something that makes your solos and improvisations better.

Feel I should comment to say thanks for everything. I have no idea how you can keep such a rapid pace of releasing content, continually providing new information, but also keeping it continually insightful! Generally that's not an easy thing to sustain, many communicators and teachers hit their core points a few times and then begin running out of things to say that they haven't already said, but you seem to do it with ease. Very well done.

This is fantastic lesson and for me one of your best. Also I think it is great regardless the level of the player. I often find that by limiting yourself (like in the video) is the best way to improve. I mean it is usually that one want to play too much, especially when practicing. So not making exercises too long is great advice also. This is the lesson for not only practicing more effectively but it goes deeper - to play better music. Thanks!

Hey Jens! Thanks for doubling down on the efficient practicing lessons while we've all been quarantined. I'm a cellist, but your channel has single handedly enabled me to hold my own with jazz guitar. My question (and idea for a future video maybe) is: it seems that so much of guitar playing is 'lick based'. No matter how many scales, exercises, etc one practices, one's hands always seem to grab onto some lick that you have heard in a song before, or some guitarist that you've transcribed. I'm curious what you think about that approach. Obviously, transcribing, playing by ear, and playing off licks that you've heard is an important part of being a musician, but I find myself either latching onto licks for any given chord or position, or relying solely on my theory/scale knowledge to get me through, but I have yet to combine the two in a seamless way when it comes time to actually perform. Any thoughts? Thanks so much for everything you're putting out there, and for keeping us quarantined musicians company.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 4 года назад
Glad you like the videos! Of course you can learn from licks, but the thing you don't want to do is to practice only playing licks because that will make it very hard for you to actually connect phrases and not sound like a copy/paste festival when you solo. It is not enough to just have a phrase and move your fingers (even if that is really easy on guitar) you want to make sure it stays flexible and that you can improvise with it. So make sure to spend time playing things that connect and also in tempos and in ways that helps you have freedom to come up with new things. If you search on the channel for motivic development and call-response you might find videos with some suggestions.

Hi Jens! Thank you for all these amazing videos. When you are practicing and writing your own licks, do you record them or write them out for later reference? Do you go over this material later or just try out a few phrases and hope that stays in your playing? I'm curious as to how this works in general. Thanks again. Regards from Chile!
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 4 года назад
Glad you like them! I am not practicing the licks to play them again, I am practicing making them. So I don't keep them. It can be useful to write them down, but actually that is more if you want to figure out why the work or why they don't work. Does that help?
@LotusTrane
@LotusTrane 4 года назад
Awesome content as usual! What you said about using exercises that are only a little bit out of reach has me reexamining a lot of what I'm working on right now. Getting all of the closed diatonic 7th chord inversions down in 7 positions is daunting, and I've been trying to do it all at once, rather than focusing on one position and one inversion at a time. After that I'd like to get them down in string sets as well, which is even more daunting. Do you have any suggestions on narrowing the scope of these goals other than to just take it one position at a time?
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 4 года назад
Maybe do one position at a time, but in that same place on the neck do other keys that are very similar, so do C,F and G in one place on the neck. That way you learn more positions but also transfer techniques from one position to another.

Thanks for the video! Your comment about triad pairs and chromatic enclosures made me think about the way Pat Martino uses chromatic enclosures basically everywhere. How would you recommend incorporating that type of sound into my playing? I have tried writing phrases like that but it’s really hard because, as you said, they get really long and complex. Maybe there is a better way to break it down?
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 4 года назад
You can easily start to make lines with chromatic enclosures, I have quite a few videos on that, just search for chromatic enclosures on the channel :) That comment was more about not making exercises that as concept takes 3 or 4 bars to be clear.

I know I'm missing something... At 4:04, how did you determine using the D Harmonic Minor over A7b9? In fact, how do I know what works well with what?
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 4 года назад
The simplified version is that if a dominant resolves to a major chord then you use the major scale of the chord it resolves to, if it resolves to a minor chord then you use the harmonic minor scale of the chord it resolves to :) You should maybe check out the video where I analyze All of Me, I talk about it there as well, just to see it in action so to speak :)
