Hey guys! This is Sarah, a Japanese "salary woman" living and working in Tokyo.
I made "Nabe" Japanese hot pot!
This is something I have everyday during the winter ☺️
It’s best to have some carbs (e.g. rice, noodles) at the end of nabe using the leftover soup. But this time there wasn’t much soup left + I was pretty full so I didn’t get the chance to have carbs 🥲 hopefully next time I’ll be able to share the whole experience!
Here are some recipes for you to make in your country!
The ingredients are for one person, so please multiply the amount depending on how many people are having it:
【Simple dashi hot pot】
Dashi ... 1/2 tsp
Soy sauce. .. 1 tbsp
Cooking sake (or white wine) ... 1 tbsp
Water ... 200 ml
*Please adjust the amount of soy sauce depending on how salty you like.
【Kimchi hot pot】
Kimchi ... 50 g
Cooking sake (or white wine) ... 2 tbsp
Soy sauce ... 1 tsp
Kochujang ... 1 tsp
Miso ... 1 tsp
Water ... 100 ml
*Please adjust the amount of soy sauce / kimchi depending on how salty you like.

It looks like what we call in the US, a slow cooker meal. Basically you put the ingredient in for the soup or stew and then set it to cook over 10 or 12 hours and it comes out really nice and tender. Looks really good!

Thank you for showing us this! "crockpot" is an american term. is that equivalent to 'hot pot'? there is great interest in vegetarian and pescetarian dishes outside of Japan, maybe also in Japan? Go tofu! Go fried tofu! :)

Hot pot is the name of the dish! ☺️ The equipment could be electronic or could just be an ordinary pot on the hob! Vegan dishes are becoming more and more popular nowadays, but it’s still not as big as in the west 🥲

Sarah, can you put noodle, bean in a Japanese Hot Pot? Do Japanese eat rice with the Hot Pot?? If you add more water, can you make into a Hot Pot Soup???

We don't really make hot pot soup (though I think that is a great idea), but sure you can add noodles, beans and rice!

This has inspired me to make nabe for dinner since it's cold. It'll be impossible for me to get those small portions of veggies and meat. I might be committed to eating it all week 😂 So odd you ate the nabe without rice, unless you were hiding it off to the side or you're keeping your carbs down.

The small portions is one thing I like living in Japan... 😂 I wrote it in the description box, but there was super little soup left at the end plus I was pretty full from all the veg 😂

Its curious to me how popular cabbage seems to be in Asian dishes since here in America growing up cabbage was thought of as less palatable than other vegetables as well as giving you gas after consumption. But it seems popular in Asia, perhaps particularly in Korea via kimchi.
@quadratic123
@quadratic123 2 года назад
Its partially due to it being easy to grow as well in many climates/conditions and it's a symbol of prosperity in China. As you mentioned with Koreans, it's a big vegetable to pickle and eat for months when food is scarce.

@@quadratic123 After reading around a bit it seems that the gassy effects can be reduced based on how the cabbage is prepared and what other ingredients are in a recipe. Probably that is what is going on here as well since its not like Asian cultures (or any others) like gassy foods.

Absolutely! I couldn't find an English site for it, but I found this website where it shows a recipe video of nabe with beaten egg: macaro-ni.jp/68445
