There's a landmark near me called The Pagoda. They used to have it lined with neon strips. The plain orange neon. They converted to red LEDs and it look atrocious. They're not even a nice glowing tube strip that attempts to mimic neon, they're just a strip where you can see the individual LEDs.

I hope Doc Neon has an apprentice or is teaching this stuff. Many of the "old arts", like Beekeeping, neon sign making, etc. are dying out to corporate. We need to keep the crafts alive for the next generation! Someone also mentioned the conversion from neon to LED. LED may be cheaper, but it cannot hold a candle to the beauty of Neon.

I worked for a sign company 20 some years ago, and we worked with neon quite a bit. We had a guy locally that did all of our glass for us. I sat with him 1 day and watched him. He was an amazing fellow, and one of the nicest people i knew back then. It is an amazing process. Of course, LED lights were just coming onto the scene and taking over neon. The guy that did our work sadly died while gardening of heart failure and his shop closed. Neon artists are a shrinking breed, and need to be kept going. To me, LEDs, LCDs, Florescent's, and what have you STILL do not have the soul of neon. Thanks for the memories Taryl👍👍 I also loved the Adam and Jamie in the background!!!

It's an amazing art form that has almost died off but for a few guys like this who are also still doing it and getting others trained as neon is making a come with old and retro signs. Had a friend Frank who did a lot of signage back awhile and he had lots of the old neon stuff taken down and replaced by awful plastic sign boxes...now all they want is the old neon back...aahh fashion!
@hyperwebbing
@hyperwebbing Год назад
Actually, it's taste. LED strips look cheap and "flashy"-pun intended. The lit cans with colors atop a white/opaque medium are boring, industrial and constrain all creativity and punch. Neon and neon done right is timeless and can have you mesmerized at its beauty and complexity. Many signs also do a moving images sequence typically changing 3-4 times before repeating endlessly.

This is a real find! I had a setup when I was in my teens and 20's where I bent my own glass and used fiberglass cloth for patterns. When I moved I lost my ribbon burner but still have my homemade cross fire setup. Had no idea the government forced the glass tubing to be lead free now. I have a box of the old stuff stored somewhere and I hope to one day get back to making cold cathode lighting!

The pink reminds me of this ice cream shop that was in my local mall when it first opened in 1990. their whole counter and sign was all pink neon. The beer aisle in the local supermarket had neon signs all down the aisle. I miss those days.

Doc's voice sounds like Johnny Cash a couple notes higher. I used to have a side hustle replacing neon and really admired the man that made them for me. Roy Lopshire was his name. He got his start in the heyday of Las Vegas neon. He was about ready to retire when I met him and was looking for someone to sell his shop to, and would train as part of the sale price. I was in my mid 20's at the time, I look back now and think why in the hell didnt I take that awesome deal? $5k was the price, pumps, torches, gas tanks, glass, mainfolds, transformers 60 years worth of artifacts could have opened a history of neon museum, and most importantly a phone book full of years and years worth of satisfied customers to do repairs for. I was young and didnt really understand what was being offered there. The price scared me out of taking it on. Such a kind and gentle man. Even after I quit replacing neon, got in trouble for not having a sign permit, if I was in the neighborhood I would stop by his shop and visit if he wasnt too busy.

There was a secret knock I had in order to make a delivery. The art of glass bending was a very well guarded art. Saler Rice was the master who bent the glass for the famous Baton twirler at the campus drive in theater at College and El Cajon blvd. when the theater was torn down they were able to save the glass and put it up at the College Grove shopping center at college Avenue / Broadway at the cross roads .
