Making new strawberry plants:
At this time of the year your strawberry plants will have sent out runners which are called stolons. These stolons are horizontal stems that run above the ground and produce new clone plants at nodes spaced at varying intervals.
Most plants have a root system that consists of primary roots with root branches forming and growing from the primary root. Strawberry plants have this arrangement for the majority of their root system. But they also have a function called adventitious root formation at the nodes of their stolons. Adventitious roots appear away from the primary roots of a plant. As the strawberry plant runners are sent out, the nodes will develop the adventitious roots, send them downwards, and establish the new clone plant once contact with soil is made. These special roots make it easy to start growing strawberry plants from a runner.
Carefully pull the clone plants out of the soil and, without separating them from the mother plant, plant them into individual pots filled with a good quality potting mix.
With the little clone plants at the end of a runner, Rob undoes a paper clip and makes it into a tiny hoop to peg the plant down so it doesn’t accidentally get uprooted.
Give the new plants a water and then leave them in situ for 2-3 weeks until they form good strong roots. At this stage they’re ready to be cut from the mother plant and transferred to a sheltered spot for overwintering.
Planting a tea hedge:
Camellia sinensis is the species of camellia that tea is made from.
To make black tea, we pick new leaves in the spring and leave them to dry out in the shade for around 24 hours. After they’ve dried we use a rolling pin to bruise them slightly. Then we ferment the leaves and dry them out again.
The term fermentation actually refers to how much the tea leaves are allowed to undergo enzymatic oxidation by allowing the freshly picked tea leaves to dry. This enzymatic oxidation process may be stopped by either pan frying or steaming the leaves before they’re completely dried out. So the fermentation happens naturally and we control it by when we stop it. Black tea is fully fermented. Green tea has hardly any fermentation at all.
We make green tea by simply drying the leaves out and stopping any fermentation by pan frying or steaming.
All camellias like a slightly acidic soil and do well in shade. They also like free-draining soil, so if you have a clay soil, add compost and even some pumice or sand to your bed at this stage.
Rob plants the tea bushes a metre apart. They can grow to 2 metres tall but we’ll prune our bushes heavily to keep them to a manageable size and to encourage new growth which is what we make tea from.
For now we’ll prune all the lower limbs off these new plants to encourage strong upward growth.
Camellias can succumb to sooty mould. If yours do, spray them with Neem oil in the evening every second day on 3 occasions to get rid of the insect causing it. Then to clean off the actual mould, use a small amount of natural detergent to make a spray and coat all parts of the plant. Make sure to get both sides of the leaves and let the detergent spray soak the leaves. You can then either wait for the next rain to wash the detergent off, or give your tree a good wash down with clean, clear water from the hose. If we don’t get rid of the sooty mould, it will affect the taste of the tea.
Next we’ll water the plants in well and then lay down a heavy mulch like well-rotted sawdust that’s high in carbon.
We won’t fertilise at this stage because we don’t want any new growth going into winter. But in the spring we’ll apply a good dose of rock dust and sheep pellets to stimulate new growth. Also if you know your soil tends to be alkaline, spring is the time to add some pine needles or sulphur or coffee grounds to create a more acidic soil.

Flowers are important in the garden because they attract beneficial insects in which deal to the insects that can cause harm to our vegetable crops. They are easy to grow and don't require special treatment. The flowers we grow are mainly annuals, so they're not in the ground for a long time. :)

That great information, you motivate to develop garden skills. I pass the information among my friend. I have recommended your video. I am going to plant flowers in separate plant bed. And vegetables in separate plant bed. Planning to buy tiger earthworms to manure soil. :) keep making your video.

Thanks it's great seeing your beautiful gardens. We have snow in New England. Could I plant those runners and mulch with straw or would it be possible to keep them in the fridge for next years planting?

Nice to hear from you. We know it gets very cold in New England, so we're not totally sure what to recommend for your conditions. We take our strawberry runners in early autumn before it gets cold. But we rarely have temperatures that go below freezing here.

It was a nice touch to show that runners from pots can be made as well. Does having Pukeko running around mean this is an NZ channel? Subbed:)

Strawberry plants send out their runners in autumn, so if you're in the Northern Hemisphere that should be happening in the next month or so. If you're in the Southern Hemisphere, you'll be planting strawberry plants now for a summer harvest. The runners will appear at the end of the harvest.

So sorry for not replying earlier - we missed your message. Little Romaine lettuces will sprout if you cut the lettuce off around 2 inches from the base - should be around 5-6 of them. They are tiny, but it's fun to do. Thanks for your lovely feedback :)

Hi I am just starting to grow strawberry plant (1). You mentioned that evenif we are planting the strawberries in a pot..I missed what you said so can you say what we are to do when the runners have rooted and are ready to be separated from the mother plant. I am planting my strawberry in a deep planter box and have little runners. It is hot where I am ,I get the morning sun up to 6 hours and then it cools down is this okay for the plant or should I move it to a cooler place. Thanks for your help.
@organicediblegarden9061
@organicediblegarden9061 8 лет назад
Hi there It's best to take runners and make them into new plants in autumn rather than mid-summer. If your plants are putting out runners just leave them for now. Six hours of sun for your strawberry plants is fine. Just make sure you keep up the watering. If you can't hear or understand our presenter, just click on CC and you can get the subtitles. All the best :)

I started taking pots with soil in them to get my runners to produce a stable root system. However, they kept growing out of them. I was going crazy trying to keep the runners in the pots to start roots. I am so glad that I watched your video! I didn't even think about something so easy as using a paper clip to keep them in there could be used. Thank you for this informational video, and I hope to almost double the number of plants that I have now.

hai. Good day,. I'm starting to grow a strawberry plant. May I know what would be the appropriate temperature for a strawberry? Is it okay if they are placed directly under the heat of the sun?
@organicediblegarden9061
@organicediblegarden9061 7 лет назад
Hi Kim Yes strawberries can grow in the heat of the sun but they don't like extreme temperatures. Ideally they like a range of temperatures between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius. :)

You didn't say anything about the type of soil you grow the strawberry runners in?
@edwardbenton8323
@edwardbenton8323 3 года назад
I have Red Clay soil adding coarse sand is vital. Without the sand once the sun hits the clay it gets hard as a rock on the surface. If I plant deep rooting plants I dig down 2 feet and remove the clay. Also keeping the sun off the soil on the south side really helps from overheating, use straw or wood chips to block the sun.
@organicediblegarden9061
@organicediblegarden9061 2 года назад
Hi there We find the best way to improve clay soil is by adding large amounts of compost and often. Bear in mind that clay soil is acidic which strawberries like.
@edwardbenton8323

@@organicediblegarden9061 True my strawberries are doing well. I'm in high altitude so I plant them on the south side of my corn rows that run east to west. The shade keeps them from burning up.

Hi there - I have previously had a problem with earwigs in my strawberry patch - any suggestions on how to get rid of them or control them ? Great videos - very informative - keep them coming.
@organicediblegarden9061
@organicediblegarden9061 7 лет назад
Hi Annette We suggest you mix up 1/4 cup water, 1/4 cup oil and 1 tablespoon molasses. Pop it into a tin or bowl that you submerge into the soil near your strawberries, so that the top of the container is at soil level. The earwigs will be attracted to the smell of the molasses in particular and fall into the trap. It should work well. :)

What about using orange, lemon, lime peels in the garden to help the soil be more acidic?
@organicediblegarden9061
@organicediblegarden9061 7 лет назад
Hi Linda Putting acidic fruit in the soil won't make it acidic. It'll break down and become pH neutral. If you want to make your soil acidic, use flowers of sulphur, pine needles, coffee grounds or sphagnum moss. :)

What should you do with your new strawberry plants in the winter? I'm in a cold climate in the USA, should I plant them outside or take them inside and water them?
@organicediblegarden9061
@organicediblegarden9061 5 лет назад
Strawberry plants will take a bit of frost, maybe up to -5 degrees Celsius. More than that and you'll need to bring them indoors for the winter. Keep them in the pots till early spring though, regardless of whether they're inside or out :)

I notice that you usually don't loosen the root ball... why?
@organicediblegarden9061
@organicediblegarden9061 8 лет назад
Hi George The reason we didn't loosen the root ball of the tea bushes is that they weren't over-packed. It depends on the condition of the roots when you take the polythene bag off. It is generally a good idea to gently loosen roots, but only necessary if they're coiling round themselves and are root-bound. Thanks for asking.

How come my strawberry leaves/plant don't look like this. I germinated the seeds but they don't look like that
@organicediblegarden9061
@organicediblegarden9061 4 года назад
Strawberry plants put runners like this out in autumn, so it depends which Hemisphere you're in. Sounds like you might be in the Southern Hemisphere, so just wait until autumn then the runners will shoot out from the mother plant and you can make new plants. If this doesn't answer your question, please send us a pic to info@organicediblegarden.co.nz and that will help us :)
