For someone that says they have limited experience your tips are all right on! The only thing I could add for people living in the tropics is to not leave them in direct sunlight when they are still in pots. It will slow down the growth and make the leaves light. I have between 350 and 400 palms in my garden (in pots) and the ones under a partial shade cloth grow the fastest. Don't shade the sun too much though or else the palms will grow thin and weak. So: The bigger the pot the better (loosen some roots when potting over) Top soil off over all visible roots Fertilise Water periodically so to prevent roots from drying out completely (especially the thin roots will die otherwise and regrowing them slows down growth elsewhere) Water the leaves from time to time Give enough sunlight (but not too much while still in pots in hot climates)
Edward Granville thank you so much Man for your kind words and your comment you were definitely right with a lot of your assessments I totally agree with you thanks for the information I have learned a little more since I made this video thanks bro cheers
Edward, where are you located? I just planted 3 Christmas Palms in my patio here in Southern California (Zone 10). 1 is potted and gets full sun all day, and the other 2 I have planted in the ground and get partial shade more than direct sun. Full sun happens for them about 4 hours a day. I realize that's not a lot for a Christmas palm, but I could really use some advice..
I'm in North east Florida. We had a small 2 leaf pindo in pot at our rental . When we bought our house I planted it. 2 years later it's almost 6 ft tall and the trunk is over 40" circumference at the base. I did fertilize and use quite a bit of humic acid and sea kelp as well
I love your videos, excellent info, your cat, your love for your cat and you have a great voice! Thank you for your knowledge and time. God bless you! And Thank God for creating Palm Trees for us to enjoy and care for!
Let me save you guys the time... ground grown palms grow faster then pot palms.. you can grow them just as fast in pots if u put the palms in way larger containers then recommended
Birds have planted about 7 of these in my front plant bed. I dug them out and potted them. The secret to getting them to grow big is using really deep pots. These trees have very deep tap roots. So you need to give it like a 24" deep pot.
Thank you for all of these videos man! I hope all of y'all have a great, wonderful, beautiful, amazing, and blessed life, and I hope everything is alright with all of y'all! I love y'all! 🥰
Dear sir thank you for an interesting video I haven't been gardening long but I really love palms and I'm trying to grow the small pups and what you said was very interesting, if I see a palm in someone's garden I always stop and talk to them because sometimes they might of been growing a tree for 30 years and if it's a beautiful specimen you can mostly learn a lot from gardeners because they like to share their knowledge. I would like to grow three or four trees in one area close together will that affect them or would it be beneficial in that they would have a small microclimate to help them grow where I am in England I leave the trees outside all the time and they seem to be growing very well thank you Sam. thank you
Hi James Chris from Chicago. Im on second Leaf of Washingtonia robusta. It under grow light every day. Thanks for simply Lemonade bottle idea works very well.
chris sobie I move them into a 1 gallon pot once the trunk is as thick as a pencil or a pen and I move them into a 2 gallon pot when the trunk is as thick as your thumb
When I was at the beach like a year ago there was some palm tree seeds on the ground underneath the palm tree so I picked them up and threw them in some pots I had at home. I just recently saw a couple what I thought was Weeds or pieces of grass and I ripped one up just to see that it had a seed on it. Then I realized that it was the palm trees and now I have two growing and I'm excited. Also kind of mad that I ripped up the first one thinking it was a weed
I always repot palms when the soil temps are warm enough to activate/continue root growth. Palms that are transplanted into soil that is too cold will cease root growth and rot. Temps for temperate species can be a bit lower, tropicals should be higher ( I would think 70f+) Unchecked root growth means unchecked top growth.
tim millan yeah you’re probably right I would never put my palms in cold temperatures so I don’t really have any experience about that thanks for the comment bro ✌️
Hello James, Can I ask about your potting mix? I have a bunch of different seedlings as well and can’t figure out the right mix as the tips begin to dry out. Thanks
hi! My dad accidentally overpruned my outdoor palm that looks very similar to yours here. He didn't cut the top off but there are very few fronds left. I will water it into the crown down the leaves as you suggest here -- do you have any other advice on how to grow the leaves back faster?
Thanks for the tricks. Do you know when is the right time to collect the seeds? I've found no information in the internet, but I guess end of summer/autumn. Thanks again.
DOUGLAS FIR The end of the summer or fall is fine but usually they are seeding all times of the year if they are not completely chopped up at all times
@@TheJames2929 And when you can tell they are mature enough? I found them in different colors, but I guess it depends on the species. Thanks again, cheers.
DOUGLAS FIR when they are not green. Simple as that. Red, orange or yellow etc. not sure? Look on the ground. What color are the fruit that have dropped? That’s your answer. Also I do not recommend collecting seed off the ground as you’ll likely get beetles that will dig into all your seeds and kill them
Hey James, Alex from Montreal. I've got sabal Cherokee, and trachycarpus nova, I will definitely replant them in bigger pots. Thanks. A local nursery has washingtonia robusta(7gallon) for sale.... Beautiful tree, but are they as hardy as windmill?
It depends on how water tolerant your palm species is. Generally, palms love lots of wood chip compost with some actual wood chip mixed in. Mix some sand with that (but not too much) and you should have a decent palm mix. If you want to buy something pre-mixed, the closest one would be cacti and succulent mixes, but they are expensive, so if you do get some, mix it 50/50 with a wood compost mix. Don't forget to fertilize the soil mix with a solid, slow release fertilizer also, because cacti mixes don't have a lot of nutrients.
Hey James. From 10 seedlings I'm down to 5. 1 leaf has sprouted up. One is solid and growing. However one is drying up in the center of the first leaf. I didn't have any drain on the base. It had alit of siting water, so I poked some drain holes. Shall I do something else?
*Hello 🥳 Happy New Year 🥳 , I was planning on moving my Mexican fan palms out onto my balcony? But if I move them from their place will they die? Because I remember when I first got them I used to move them a lot and the leaves turned yellow and fell down and then they died, and right now each of my Palms have only one leave growing from the middle, and I want them to grow faster so what should I do?*
I just got a 4 ft Trachycarpus maybe a week ago and after its first day outside I brought it inside and the leaflets were looking darker and were starting to fold up. It was out in full sun for about 6 hours and I've been holding back on watering to avoid root rot. I have very well draining soil and I haven't fertilized yet. None of the leaves are yellowing or pale and no brown tips. The top of the soil was pretty dry when I brought it inside but I just gave it a gallon of water before I put it out. There's no way it would be using that much water during transplant shock right? Would mites cause this behavior? I'm sort of at a loss and you seem to be the expert on pommate palms. Either way great videos man they're like finding gems in a pile of rocks.
Hi, I have a lot of seedlings growing in the ground from my Christmas palm I’d like to transplant into pots so they get better sunlight and grow faster..any tips on removing them from ground and putting into pots so they grow faster?
How you watering palm seeds if they growing roots? Like i have couple in soil and i been watering if the soil been going little bit dry. I know you dry out adult plants soil for week but how about seedlings or seeds.
If you move up to a giant pot right away it encourages root rot. Because the bigger the pot the more water you will need to use and it will be too much water for a smaller palm.
It's called root bound...its when a plant has an excessive root system and it doesn't have the space for the roots to stretch and absorb nutrients and they basically wrap around one another until they choke themselves causing a deficiency in nutrients uptake and the plant suffers...its equivalent to a person that's 280 lbs. restricting themselves to eating lunchables and starving themselves...they need to take in as much as their mass requires or they will either stunt growth or decline until death...repotting is necessary and should not be put off for too long...
Hi!.. I wanna go for research on palms 5 varieties...but I have no idea how to wash and clean the palms seeds... I planted the bismarkia palm, Queen palm, canaria palm Copernacia palm and foxtail palm.. Can u give me suggestions how to wash the seeds and which chemicals is best for these varieties to early germination? Pleases reply to my question tha k you..
My fan palm is dying. How can I revive it? Trimmed brown leaves. New growth stuck in suspended animation for 2 months. The stalk is split into 2 stalks, maybe it's a mutant?
I’m in zone 8 and we have many windmills, Sabals and pindos here. I did just get two mule palms, which of course is a hybrid of queen which of course on its own is not a candidate of my zone. They both have about 5 leaves and the seller told me they were fine to go ahead and put in the ground to get established but to protect in winter until the trunks reach about 6” diameter. Should I not have done this just yet? I’d sure hate to not give them the best chance possible to thrive.
fuhgetabouddit if you planted them in the ground right now I think they would do fine especially if you get a mild winter if you want to protect them for sure you can make them survive and they’ll grow all they want in the spring
We have a palm tree and some leaves are drying up speacially the new ones in the middle, can you help why is that? Is that because we've given it more water than it needed.
How tall will a washi get in a pot if you keep it in there permanently? Will it just stop growing at some point? Or will it grow much slower I am considering getting one but my parents dont want a huge plant in the house.
Ross Demmon if you keep it in a small pot it will never get big but it may eventually decline and die just grow it until it’s to pack and then leave it outside and then start another one from seed that’s the easiest way it’ll be more fun to watch it grow each year
@@TheJames2929 alright I may consider something else slower growing for now, how fast does Trachycarpus bulgaria grow? I know its really hardy to like -15 F
Southern ontario Palms and tropicals Yeah a red solo cup is deep enough to get a fairly large palm going. It just has to be deeper than like 3 inches. And be all by itself if the palm is with other palms it will grow slower. the one on its own will always be faster growing in the one mixed with all the others in one pot
I would look for a healthy specimen of the palm you choose, and gather seeds from the ground. The healthier the plant, the more likely the seeds will germinate.
So transplant from a small pot to a bigger pot to get a plant to grow faster. Who would have thought about that idea. Like maybe everyone older than 6 years of age.
@@TheJames2929 That's what I'm trying now. I have the palm in full sun with the blinds turned up. Only the soil is in sun. It's a Ravenea Majesty Palm 'Tree' who would have known 😅
Hey I have a plam tree plant and its dead I give it some soil and gave it water but instead of giving it a little water I gave it alot and it still dead can I save my dead plam tree ? What to do?
What kind of palm is it? Could be the soil. Some palms like well drained soil, others more moist. Could be your soil. Or not watering thoroughly on a regular basis if it's in a pot. I take care of people's potted plants when they're out of town, and I noticed how soil looks wet on top, but down beneath, it is bone dry. This happens when there's no regular watering and then when the soil becomes too dry, it repels the moisture. Then the plant either needs to be repotted with moist soil or you'll need to work the moisture back into soil with your hands, or have it sit in a saucer type water capture at bottom with extra water sitting in it. Not sure if that's what happened to you, but I see this as a common problem. Repot your palm and chop up banana peels, let them soak in water for a few days, then pour on soil near roots. Palms love the potassium in it. I feed mine with whole bananas chopped up mixed with water and into the soil when bananas are on sale.
MrHellsno I never have but if you want I guess I could better wait a few more weeks so there’s no cold weather at all and I can try to send them to you Just email me at james_shep2929@hotmail.com
