You've set your mitersaw for 45 degrees yet when you assemble, that fourth side just doesn't fit right. You cut here, adjust there and finally succumb to good enough. Let's make it perfect the first time! WOOD magazine's John Olson takes a new approach on cutting your miter. Think outside the box by cutting to the inside. You'll just have to watch.

Very thorough and easy to understand. I’ve used the trimming of the inside to make a short piece longer. I was trimming a border of walnut for a coffee table, when I cut the piece too short! I didn’t have more stock! After a day of mourning, I remembered your trick! It worked beautifully!!! To this day whenever I see the table at the customer’s home, I inwardly grin at my “boardstretcher” work. Thank you!

Some great tips for miters! I especially like the taking off of the length to make the board longer, I hadn't seen that before. Thanks a lot.

I had given up on mitered corners and always made but joints that do fit. My clientele of retirees never noticed because first, they were free, and second, they fit. Now, I'm going for miters and I will charge for professional woodworking! This will have two effects. My pride will be greatly enhanced and my workload dramatically reduced! No more beat to fit and paint to match! Great video and even better idea. I'm sure that you have said at some point "I cut it off twice, and its still too short!"

Must say I was like what could he be talking about for this amount of time on miters. I was surprised, that had to be the best example of how to deal with miters I have seen. Do love your trick shaving the inner edge to add length knowing your stock will be trimmed later. Thanks so much for sharing.

Good video. I would’ve liked to have seen your method for trimming the outside edges to bring the unequal thickness of the installed trim to final thickness so that the outside corners are perfect.

WHAT?! TRIM THE INSIDE?!!! 🤯🤯🤯 AMAZING!!! I honestly can’t believe I have never seen this technique before...or thought of this myself. I don’t have the best tools yet so motets are a crap shoot...but this should definitely help me get a better result and not have to fight the corners. Thanks!!! :)

I am fairly new to this woodworking stuff but the part about making the stock longer......was pretty slick (@19:45).

I've been doing woodworking for 45+ years and I thought it was pretty slick too. I've never done it or have ever seen anyone else do it. All made possible by the trim stock being wider than finish dimension. This old dog has learned a new trick!!!

Making a short piece fit with just shaving the other side for a nice tight fit. Blew!! My mind. Definitely going to use this in my future projects. Just getting into woodworking and this is great stuff. Thanks for the tips. Amazing video great job!

SrPOWNSALOT : I know right? Just getting into all this myself since I'm recently retired. I thought he was crazy when he said he would cut that too short and make it fit. I've used the "Go get the board stretcher" trick on many a new guy on construction sites my whole life. It was used on me when I was the "new guy" many moons ago. My mind was blown as well. It's such a simple concept it's almost embarrassing to admit all this. ;-))P

The shop I worked in had a huge miter guillotine that worked really well for tight miters but I need to make a shooting plane for home. I really learned a lot from your explanation of it's use. I prefer your slow and controlled use vs the fast cuts I've seen on every other shooting plane video.

The advantage a plane and shooting board has over a guillotine becomes apparent come sharpening time!

I will definitely be using this technique for upcoming picture frames I'm building for my daughter. One thing I'll add: measure the 4th piece before gluing on the 3rd. One thing I would have liked to have seen is your glue application. Do you use it sparingly or are you cleaning up a lot?

When your trim pieces fit this tight will adding glue to the surfaces create gaps at each end?

After you get everything glued up how do you trim all 4 sides so they are 3/4 inches? I was hoping the video would show this.
@mikecarroll3132
@mikecarroll3132 4 года назад
Would you be able to glue up the first and second pieces, then mark and fit the final 2 before gluing them on? To me that would allow you to do your same process all the way around.

I want to use the method and then veneer the entire panel. Do you think the edging will telegraph through the veneer. My customer doesn’t want taped edge
@leehaelters6182
@leehaelters6182 4 года назад
I think yes, for sure. You would have to add a crossbanding veneer underneath to mitigate that a bit, but that will start to be visible from the edge. All the best.

RU-vid has a “watch later” setting. Some things are worth taking the time to patiently listen and watch. As someone who loves woodworking but relies on video as a teacher...this is one of those things. He’s an excellent teacher.
