My British husband cooked porridge every morning. He would soak the oats in water overnight, then add a little evaporated milk and fresh blueberries to the pot in the morning. He would stir the porridge with a beautiful spurtle topped with a carved thistle. Whenever I found Lyles syrup in a store, I would surprise him with a can or two. We were married 39 years before he died, and aside from vacations away from home, this is how he started each day.
I followed your instructions step by step and it's the first time I make such a delicious porridge. I wanted to stop using milk and your recipe was just perfect. I never thought of adding a pinch of sea salt, completely new for me. I'm Argentinian and lived in London for a while and used to enjoy porridge a lot! Thanks, James!
I eat apple pie porridge: Make the porridge as Jamie said (but with milk not water) Half way through cooking add in tiny pieces of diced apple Add cinnamon and nutmeg Once apple is soft and porridge is cooked, pour into a big bowl and enjoy :P
+Hermetic Kitten Your most welcome! Its simple and good for you, so I can pretty much see why someone can eat it everyday.Interesting thing is that in other countries "porridge" is oats.Where I come from, porridge is in a watery rice form.
Just wanna say that ever since I found this video a few years ago my mornings have consistently included porridge. My personal twist is with a splash of milk and a spoonful of greek yogurt, with a tablespoon of whatever jam i have handy. Delicious and nutritious!
I’ve been using Sicilian orange curd and poppy seeds. Absolutely amazing. This video was great because it shows how endless the possibilities are with porridge and that there probably isn’t a right or wrong way to cook it, it’s all up to the individual and how they like it.
I like how you added the milk later. I'm trying to lower my diary intake so that's a great tip! Personally, I just add cinnamon and 3 Sukkari dates (Type of Saudi Dates) and a full spoon of peanut butter.
anyone else watching this while quarantine in 2020 . T....T Edit: Cannot believe it’s 2021 & I’m still watching this in isolation:) the only difference is that iv mastered making porridges! I just come here sometimes bcs i like Jamie’s accent and his builders mugs..
Right. I was just remembering reading the fairy tale about the magic porridge pot that overflowed the town with porridge when it wouldn't stop and thinking porridge was this amazing thing.
These look amazing 🤤 I usually grate an apple in while cooking, maybe add some banana if I want it extra sweet, put in cinnamon at the end and after cooking I like adding a spoonful of greek yoghurt. Sounds like a weird mix, but it tastes delicious, trust me 😁
I am going to try this, sounds great! I eat rolked oats, soajed overnight with yoghurt and apple regularly, but cold. I think I will love the hot version.
Jamie Oliver, you're brilliant! I'm so glad I discovered your Foodtube videos. My favorites are the ones where you demonstrate how to prepare a particular food in a variety of ways. I also love how you reference the cooking techniques of different countries. Very educational and inspiring! You're a wonderful chef and a delight to watch. Cheers from the states!!
My favourite is with soy milk, which is not quite as rich as normal milk but also not quite like using water. Depending on my mood I sometimes cook it quicker to have a more coarse porridge or give it time for a smoother one. I also love using different flakes instead of just oat. I have spelt flakes for example that give the porridge a bit of a heartier taste. And mixing up fine and coarse oats for different textures. For flavour I always put it quite heavy amounts of cinnamon, a nice bit of maple syrup, agave nectar or brown sugar(we don't really have golden sryup here). Topped with some kind of fruit, best a quick berry sauce like shown in the video or an apple compote. If I have good fruit at home fresh is perfect of course.
HI Nice! Might try that. I make mine with added almond meal and sweeten with a fresh Medjool date, and sprinkled cinnamon. No cane sugar, milk or honey needed. Delish!
I’m Italian and I love porridge, I actually doing it kind of mixing 2 ways he said, I mix it with a tsp of unsweetened cocoa, a bit of cinnamon and spice chilli powder, maple syrup and sliced banana on top I love it, that little spice in the morning is a lovely kickstart
I like grated fresh ginger and ground cloves for “Ginger snap” porridge decorate with fresh fruit in summer or dried fruit in winter. Really nice on rainy days.
Zoid Burg The oats people use are usually almost 'dead' because they have been pasteurized. Soaking, fermenting and sprouting is good against phytic acid as far as I know. I soak other grains for 5-12 hours, oat grains are lighter (according to the German Dr. Bruker who was an expert in this field and studied Bircher Benner's muesli) and need less time to soak and be well digestible.
Nimity Tei If you have whole oat groats, you must first flake them by using an oat roller. I let mine fall from the machine (I have one called Flocino) into a dish with some water to prevent oxidation of the flakes. They should soak 30 min. to 1 hour. All of them should be just moist. Don't use too much water. Then add sweet fruits and raw nuts to enjoy it. ;) It is a light meal (you don't feel it in the stomach) but I feel hunger only after 4-5 hours. Feel free to ask more if you need help.
BurninRevolver It probably depends where you live - here its about R55 for a litter - around 5$ - thats decent - compared to regular milk its expensive - I also use rice milk - these days I like the rice milk more
I watched this video during my college life, coming back again 8 years later. Definitely change how I see porridge, I used to hate it, now its my favorite breakfast in Winter, thank you Jamie.
i have my porridge with dates, apples, figs, bananas, blueberries and flaxseeds. sometimes i add cocoa powder to it and it tastes amazing!!! cinneamon and a pinch of salt and pepper always goes in there :)
I make a savory oatmeal dish boiling the oats in chicken stock ( store bought or home-made but i use the Kirkland brand chicken stock from Costco, it's so tasty with the oats) and then add in any preferred veg and chicken/shrimp, salt and spices to taste and it's soo good, especially if you want something filling but you're trying to lose weight. I've seen this done with soft boiled eggs as well but haven't tried that yet. It's basically a substitute to rice but obviously its a porridge.
My mother cooks it with milk instead of water and cooks a banana cut in small pieces with it. Love it with cinnamon and sugar. Perfect for winter eve's.
Sometimes I will have savoury porridge, with an easy-over egg and a slice of bacon, plus black pepper and salt to taste. The runny yolk drizzles over the porridge - it's so silky! #myperfectporridge
I love this video! It resets me, I start cooking like this, and then drift away. But this is the best! I add some vegan yogurt, almond butter, raspberries, blueberries and half of banana. And of course some honey. Keeps me full till lunch, the best breakfast.
I find it better with two parts water one part skimmed milk. Plus I wouldn’t bother with the salt, many people overdo the salt, thinking it is essential but it tastes yuck unless you reduce the salt to a tiny amount, by which time you don’t notice the difference. Thus the need to use salt is a bit of a myth.
I always have porridge every day, i add a teaspoon of ground flax seed and a teaspoon of chia seeds, handful of blueberries and a chopped banana, then the icing on the cake is a tablespoon of peanut butter. It’s gorgeous!
Loved the new topping ideas Jamie : ) I’ve been making porridge used natural organic muesli , it’s got all the bells and whistles already in and tastes fantastic with yoghurt
As a kid, i watched a few cartoons and movies that identifies Porridge as a cruel meal, like one of those awful meals that the lunch lady serves you instead of something pleasant. I didn't even know porridge was oatmeal until i watched this video.
RoughChopTom The 2 words was never put together. I cooked in middle school and high school, but no one ever said porridge is oatmeal. I never had those types of recipes before, nor did anyone i knew at the time. It's kinda weird.
I eat my porridge with cocoa powder, cinnamon, bit of maple syrup and a pinch of salt for i think about a year now as my breakfast and I just never get tired of it, it is so delicious I love it :-)
Looks great but MY PORRIDGE IS BEST! I soak half a cup of oats with a whole cup of almond milk -chuck in two teaspoons of chia seeds -a pitch of nutmeg -a small dash of vanilla essence -a small teaspoon of cinnamon -chuck in a few raisins -a big teaspoon of whatever honey of your choice -slice up half a banana and pop it in mix it all up, put it in the fridge overnight, ready to eat just as is in the morning, or you can heat it up in a small pot with a bit of water if that's what you'd prefer. :) You can also add some fruit on top!
+Grace H Me too.... I add chia seeds and coconut and chopped dates. I sweeten with either honey or maple syrup... I prepare it the night before and keep it in the fidge overnight, then take it to work the next day, and then warm it up in the microwave. It doesnt need a lot of cooking as the overnight soaking in milk has softened it. I use almond milk, or sometimes rice milk... I tried soya milk and its way too sour.
It's funny. My English hubby, while we were living in the states, complained he couldn't find porridge in the stores. I didn't know what it was back then, but he would hunt the cereal aisles and never find it. I could've kicked him when we came to the UK and I discovered it was just stinking OATMEAL! Like we didn't have rolled oats available.....doofus! We like it with lots of cinnamon, dark brown sugar or maple syrup, and sometimes fruit, like cooked apples or my homemade whole cranberry sauce. I also occasionally do chocolate with a dash of cocoa powder mixed in. As for the calories, so what? You need to start the day with a full meal! If you wanna get technical, having a bigger, higher caloric breakfast is healthier because you have all day to burn it off!
I love porridge. Peanut Butter is amazing with porridge and I always add bananas to it also with a touch of vanilla essence in the cooking process. Its damn good and just what the doctor orders in the winter months :)
I like that comment about putting the "gully" into the porridge then adding milk. That's what my mum always did too (she'd just call it "roads"). Completely forgot about that little tradition until it was mentioned here.
heaps of added sugar there at the end! My 2 cents on a less sugary alternative: do the traditional recipe Mr O gives us here, which is excellent, plus 1 sliced banana, a pinch of cinnamon and a table spoon or so of pepitas/pumpkin seeds for different texture / extra protein
rose hogan no, rice pudding is sweet like dessert. rice porridge is savory, often cooked with chicken broth and flavored with aromatics like garlic, ginger, or green onion - depending on the region.
Linda Ackberger yea, It seems quite a lot of sugar.. to be honest every time I bake a cake from a UK or Usa (I’m Italian) recipe I put 1/3 of sugar that it requires, too much! We have very sugary thing too, but for a kid all this sugar is not good
Never cooked porridge with wather before, taught it would be not as tasty as with milk but I was totally wrong! JAMIE thank you for this recipe! Delicious! Mashed one banana into the porridge and put one apple on top. Finished with a pinch of cinnamon - yummie 😍😍😍
hey, very nice video! To be honest my wife started to make porridge when she decided to turn vegan and since that time she discovered a lots of options how to make this meal absolutely brilliant. There are tons of versions of this with various seeds, jams, fruits etc.
when I was a lot younger, we used to cook oats and add an egg or two, with some milk powder and dates or raisins, or sultanas, according to desire for a late night snack. Now however, whenever I wish to have porridge (oats), I add some chopped up lemon rind and all (I only add the skin if it is from someones' tree - no pesticides etc), some cinnamon and nutmeg, some plantain leaves chopped up small, some pulversized olive leaf (I have three small olive trees), some nettle tea, or birch or oat straw tea, and anything else I may feel like, like a bit of molasses, and some tumeric powder and of course a touch of sea salt. It is very savoury but I know that it is a good deal for my health. The lemon pieces give it a nice tang. Often I have already used the lemon by soaking it in filtered water overnight for my next day's first drink - great liver tonic and alkalizer.
Thanks Jamie I was making it good for a while then I started making it with coconut milk and it wasn’t really going very thick in fact it wasn’t cooking but now I know the trick start off with a little water cheers
@@DanteLikesRock Well, Ed Sheeran does the whole one man band thing with all the loop deck stuff. This guy is like a one man kitchen. They're both really talented and good at what they do. They're both really entertaining. I reckon Jamie Oliver is a bit older than Ed, but when Naked Chef was big, he must have been around the same age as Ed when becoming popular. And yes, they're both British. It's just a joke, sorry.
a lot of people are complaining about the sugar which is completely fair, but i do think if people are trying to get into porridge this is a good way to start! i used to have mine with milk, sugar and blueberries. now i’ve been eating it for almost 5 years and i just use oat milk and seeds. it’s very plain and healthy now but it took time to get used to the taste.
I stir in ground ginger + cinnamon and then a diced apple + raisins. Sometimes (if I have these ingredients on hand), I add sliced almonds, chia seeds or ground flax meal, and if it still requires a little sweetness (usually it doesn't), drizzle a bit of maple syrup on top.
I made this with 1/3 cup of rolled whole oats, 3/4 cup water, medium till boil, then covered on low for 8 mins, then added 2 teaspoons of margarine/butter and it came out like pure icecream texture!!
I've been trying to find how to make a single portion for the better part of my morning & all the internet was giving me was dang single serving oatmeal cookies. Thank you for making this!
