In this video, I talk about making perfume at home with essential oils and the different categories in the wheel of fragrance when blending your essential oils and making perfume. I chose the Woody Note category and used Basil essential oil as my top note, Black Pepper essential oil as my middle note, and Sandalwood as my base note. I found this video a bit confusing: are the notes (top, middle, base) in making a fragrance determined by the percentage (number of drops per oil...40 to 30 to 30, ie.)? In other words, in your first demo what if you had utilized a greater number of drops for black pepper rather than basil would this be acceptable in reference to how the notes are to be mixed? Thanks.

Blending by note is as you said based on the three notes: Top, Middle, and Base. You use 1 drop of base note to 2 drops of middle note, to 3 drops of top note. The note of an essential oil is determined by its viscosity and evaporation rate (the top evaporate the fastest so we use more. The total number of drops in a mixture is determined by what type of product i.e. (a perfume is more concentrated than a cologne).

@@AromaHutInstitute What I meant to express in my previous question is can any note be a top note or must top notes only come from floral and/or fresh when mixed with an oriental and/or woodsy? Can an oriental and/or woodsy be a top note with a floral and/or fresh? @@todddale7041 Oh, okay. I am sorry I misunderstood you. Blending by aromatic groups then, you might try the ratio of 40:30:30, or 60:40:20. For instance, that means 60% top, 40% middle, and 20% base (6 drops top, 4 drops middle, 2 drops of base note.

Thank you for your great explanation, it's super helpful. Now, I am just wondering. If I want to do vertical accords, is that possible to use a different kind of notes for every top, middle, and base notes?.. Let says, I use floral notes as top notes, woody notes as middle notes, and oriental notes as base notes.

Yes, you can! With a diffuser, you will not need a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil; some diffusers do use water though.

You told very simple method. 1-2-3 that means 1 drop base note 2 drop middle note and three drop top note. Which I don't know before.
