I make a loud speaker for a clock radio using a piezoelectric crystal. Actually I experiment with a variety of piezo crystals. That includes a piezoelectric igniter crystal from a BBQ lighter and a homemade/DIY rochelle salt piezoelectric crystal. I also try out a piezo buzzer from Radio Shack and also a crystal earpiece normally used with a crystal radio. To increase the voltage coming from the radio I first try stepping it up using a doorbell transformer and then I use a microwave oven transformer.
To see my follow-up video "Piezoelectric speaker - small crystals/window as speaker" for a demonstration using a smaller crystal and using a window as a speaker, click here:

PS.: I was reading a Forrest Mims' book where it was described a device which is made of a can with an aluminium foil membrane which reflects light differently (varying intensity at a specific spot by varying the focal point, I guess) as sound enters the can. I think you could merge this with your speaker and and then use a LDR to amplify the sound!

You increased the voltage in order to make the crystal work, and that makes me wonder: how many volts does it need? And how many volts does a regular gift card use? Thank you very much! All your stuff is really inspiring

Glad to hear you enjoyed my vid. The crystal I used in the vid was made in two stages. I grew a small crystal from a first batch and the used that as a seed suspended in a beaker in a roughly temperature controlled environment to grow a larger one. It's been through a lot over the years and this past week it finally broke so the one in the vid is actually 3/4 the size it used to be. Make sure you post a vid of you crystal in action. I'm already subbed so I won't miss it.

@@RimstarOrg Hi, could you elaborate a bit on the safety of it? Is it safe because it will not draw much amps? Other sources claim that the high voltage may be dangerous anyway...
@ajanki34

I think the bigger the crystal the more attenuation of the sound occurs because it needs more electricity to vibrate more of the crystal in order to transmit the sound waves at higher amplitudes. I think that's why the yellow ear piece worked so well. You might have better luck if you make the crystals in small pieces, rather than larger cube shaped blocks.

LOL. Actually the alarm clock stopped working a long time ago, but the thing that stopped working was that it wouldn't always go off at the right time or at all. The annoying wakeup sound and the radio still work.

A piezo crystal is one where if you apply a voltage to it then it will change shape. It'll do this briefly and only when the voltage is first applied. In this video the crystal is connected to the output of the radio. The radio's output is a constantly changing voltage so it it constantly changing the shape of the piezo crystal. This changing shape vibrates the surrounding air. That creates sound waves which you hear.
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 12 лет назад
Not necessarily. I have some small crystals, around 1/4" or 5mm, that are all uniform. I've seen photos of much larger homemade ones. My big one isn't so uniform but if I broke it apart I'd still have some large uniform ones. One difference would be in the shape. It's hard to make a large flat crystal like the disk shaped ones in the piezo buzzer, gift card, or crystal earpiece, or cylindrical as I think the piezo igniters contain. Some bought ones also have a larger piezo effect.
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 11 лет назад
Glad you liked it. The Rochelle salt I used is actually a pretty weak piezoelectic crystal so I imagine pretty much any crystal that's piezoelectric will work, granite for example. At 6:20 in the video I demonstrate using a piezoelectric crystal taken from a BBQ igniter. I know nothing about using them for therapy.
@MilanKarakas
@MilanKarakas 10 лет назад
Actually, to get more sound PRESSURE out from the piezo crystal (at your video, starting from 6:45), you should to put cone in opposite fashion - so that narrow end is attached to the crystal, and wide end to the room. What happened in your case is the Bernoulli effect - fluid (air) become accelerated, but in the same time pressure goes down. You need the opposite effect - fluid slowing down, but sound pressure going up. Is that make sense to you? Thank you in advance for your answer, milan ---

Thanks! I made the crystal. It's rochelle salt. See my video "How to make Rochelle salt piezoelectric crystal". There's a link to it in the description below this video and one at the end of the video (if you have annotations available.) Actually, that process results in smaller, but still working crystals (see my "Piezo Speaker (continued)" video). To make the big one I took one of the small ones and used it as a seed crystal to grow the bigger one. Unfortunately I never documented that step.

Once I made a speaker using a piezo from an old watch - it was already attached to the metal backing plate so I just stuck (screwed) that to a piece of wood and there I had a piezo speaker! I didn't need hundreds of volts but I guess they aren't the same as those crystals. You can also just get these things out of 90's boombox stereos since they loved using piezo tweeters back then ;-) In fact maybe we could make a line array or planar type speaker out of them lol

If yours is quiet and you're talking about the rochelle salt crystal then my feeling is it won't work. But it might with the piezo crystals from the igniter and lighter or the disk crystal from a gift card and definitely with the piezo buzzer.

Oh, the speaker on the clock radio works fine. The only thing wrong with it is that the alarm goes off at random times, hence my willingness to open it up. This whole thing was done just for an interesting experiment. Lots of people, including me, are interested in what you can do with a homemade Rochelle salt piezo crystal. It's limited, but lots of fun to do. And that's all it is, for fun.
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 12 лет назад
Because I didn't think of it. I just did it now and didn't see much difference. I think I'd have to open up the buzzer's plastic case and extract the piezo crystal/disk itself and put that on the can. I don't want though because it looks like I'd have to cut the case and I want to keep it intact. Too bad the piezo disk I got from the gift card is no longer usable. I'll have to find another one.
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 11 лет назад
No, unfortunately not. Even if you give it a sudden hard press but maintain the pressure, you still only get the voltage at the initial press and it quickly dampens out in the form of a dampened wave, alternating polarities until there's no more.

There is no need to use specific crystal, any dielectric will do the job. putting 2 aluminium foils close to each other and leaving 1mm ring gap should make quite decent loudspeaker. replacing one foil with wire mesh would work even better
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 11 лет назад
I thought you were going to say you wanted to use the quartz for the speaker. I've never tried that but quartz is piezoelectric so it might work. But putting quartz inside a lighter in place of the existing crystal? I don't know if it would produce sufficient voltage to create the arc at the spark gap to ignite the gas. Test first to see which sides to impact & which sides will have the voltage across them. A voltmeter will work there. See my Rochelle salt testing video, though I use a scope.
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 11 лет назад
I'm guessing you mean for transformer that has a primary coil and a secondary coil... The coil with more turns has the higher voltage. You need more voltage to the piezo.
@omsingharjit

Well, there's always an external power source but if it's okay if it's mechanical energy provided by you then make something like "flint spark torch igniter" (do a google search.) Or building up charge using an electrophorus is a more science experiment type of way to do it. Or rub your feet against carpet and then touch a doorknob (though the spark is pretty faint.)

The limiting factor here is not necessarily the amount of energy you put into the crystal but rather the distance the crystal will move when it vibrates. Piezoelectric crystals vibrate with a lot of force but over a very small distance. The trick would be to convert that force into motion. Try attaching a lever (maybe a sewing needle) to the crystal. Put the pivot point close to the crystal and attach the other end of the needle to the diaphragm of one of your cones, and rock out dude. lml

What if you hooked the radio to the doorbell transformer like you had it in the first part and then the output (the 120V side of the doorbell transformer) to the 120V side of the microwave transformer and then try the crystal on the secondary. Watch out, you might have arcs. Back in 1997 my art teacher in school had that same alarm clock radio. I asked her one day if she still had it because I wanted to clean and fix it up but it got thrown away. It was falling apart when I was attending class.

Its quite amazing to note the kind of time you get to do these little things. It is almost the same for me too... I was inspired by your crystal radio and built one for me too, which is sitting in my drawing... kind of worried about the sound intensity, may be the time has changed as we get to have 100 fold more SOUND from the time.... I did one some 30 years back. Shall post a video of my crystal soon and any advice for me if I have to increase the sound intensity without an amplifier..... Cheers...!
@RimstarOrg
@RimstarOrg 10 лет назад
One way to increase the sound intensity is to use a longer antenna and/or to make the antenna point in the direction of the radio station. If you're using an antenna coil and a tuning coil like I am, moving them closer together will also increase the sound intensity but at a risk of more interference from other radio stations. I'm glad you're having fun too! Cheers!

@bruce_daddy

Tuning fork Y shape possibly.. I remember a video stating that quartz in that shape was used to keep time in watches and they've always seemed reliable. Even though the time keeping part is due to a specific frequency quartz produces by cutting it small and precise so that it's accurate. But tunings forks in general seem like they do the job considering it's basically a single piece of solid metal. I'm not sure how precise of a shape you're able to make but consider everyday acoustic items that are meant to be loud like a hollow cylinder used for chimes, bells, cones etc. Then again I'm not sure if its resonance relates to producing a piezoelectric reaction. If that's what you're using it for I'm pretty sure symmetrical shapes play a part in how effective that is.

It's possible that the magnetic fields associated with the high currents passing thru your wires was pushing against the Earths weak magnetic field and creating a version of the traditional magnetic "coil" speaker. It's a guess based on the info given and I haven't any experiential knowledge of this effect. If you can add any more details about the high power resistors or other observations of this effect I'd certainly want to work out what is going on as presently its an observation requiring an explanation. There are YT vids of people finding Rodin coils (a particularly fancy coil arrangement) behave a bit like quiet speakers, well it's really no surprise as one expects this at some level which of course is also quantifiable given enough info. Another thought its possible that the resistors you mentioned are of a wirewound construction thus having more inductance than any other circuit element such as the connecting wires and again behaving like speaker coils in the Earths field. This hypothesis would receive support if the observed sound increased in volume as you moved a strong magnet near and about one of the resistors. It might be that the mounting technique and orientation reduced the volume to inaudible levels but you might find that a paper cone with a needle or thin nail near its apex (point) touching an unmounted power resistor will make it appear louder. In any case I doubt it is a piezoelectric effect as displayed by quartz and Rochelle salt and certain other crystals. Just FYI I recall also that MIT reported a year or so ago some polymer they'd made which was effectively a piezo plastic sheet which could turn any surface into a speaker of sorts. It might be something you come across down the track.

The question would QUARTZ vibrations can be altered in ways that are different to affect the physical properties of another object. just imagine what the oscillation may be about to push like the other body. If the number of pulses to rock quartz 64 nano would pulses and frequency regulated at random would be could have that kind of result.

You can use a smaller crystal. See my other video "Piezoelectric speaker - small crystals/window as speaker" where I do just that. There's a link to in in the description below this video or you can find it on my channel page. Regarding the smaller can, yes you can use something much smaller. The paper cones I showed in this video were smaller for example. The sounds quality with cans doesn't seem too good so the quality with a small can will probably be as bad as with the big one I showed.

You wouldn't even need the transformer. The wires from the radio were originally going to a regular speaker inside the radio. So you'd just connect it the wires to a speaker.

@@RimstarOrg Yeah but does the microwave transformer make the signal more powerful like in a commercial 70v audio setup where the audio goes through two transformers before it reaches the speaker? One after the amplifier and one before the speaker. What would happen if you connected a high power speaker to the 70v line? I know that you can connect any speaker to the radio and it will work because I've tried it and you can feed the audio into a more powerful amplifier to make it louder. This setup seems like you are making the audio signal from the radio more powerful in order to drive the piezo speaker.

The purpose of the transformer was to step up the voltage because the piezo crystal works off higher voltage than a speaker. But the current is lowered at the same time for the power stays the same (ignoring losses through the transformer). The only amplification may have been the use of cones to more direct the sound waves to a smaller location.

are there any electrical contact angles that would improve amplitude seen at the mechanical contact angle of the crystal? what if you were to cut the crystal with a moistened thread and try the various angles?

There are definitely different orientations that work and others that don't. I find that with these Rochelle salt crystals the voltage is always at right angles to the pressure, but you still have to find which sides of the crystal to apply the pressure to.

LOL Ah, thanks for clarifying! I agree. When a microwave oven transformer is hooked up directly to household power it's a high voltage AND high current scary thing. People make spot welders with it. See my good friend's Grant Thompson's awesome video doing just that ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vrlvqib94xQ.html
