How to make radio scanner from smartphone with RTL-SDR DVB-T dongle

Hello. Today I am showing how to do portable radio scanner using android smartphone and 20$ DVB-T RTL2832 R820T based USB dongle.
I am also using SDR Touch application from Google Play store to show you how the USB dongle is working.
In this example I tuned to garage remote controll operating on 433 MHz but you can scan any band you wish like police bands, aircraft bands etc.
Remember that your smartphone has to support OTG ( USB On the go) to be able to connect with USB rtl-sdr dongle
The connector name is RP-SMA , not RCA :-) sorry about that.

mobile phone calls are encrypted but you can listen any kind of unencrypted analog like PMR or aircrafts.

Hi, this device is only a receiver. It allows to listen any kind of radio transmission on frequency between 25MHz and 1750MHz. It cannot transmit any data/sound etc.

Another hint... when doing a video in English you might want to get into the program and put it in English so all the controls coincide with what you're saying. You can always switch it back to your language later. Just a thought

Hey buddy. Quick question… There’s a frequency in my home that sounds like uhf or vhf that is either somehow about to read my mind or hear the low waves of me thinking out aloud. Have you ever heard of this and any idea on how to combat such a thing? Thanks.

Set the receiver to 433 mhz frequency and press the remote control. The receiver can receive the frequency far. about how many meters

how do I record the 433Mhz signal and send it to the URH. for the analysis process, and then send it to arduino and record in disgispark...

There is the "record" option in SDRTouch android app that can create WAV file for further analysis with other programs like URH (can import uncompressed WAV files) or Audacity on the PC but I haven't tried this scenario. I would suggest to use the PC and URH software with RTLSDR dongle from the begininng to capture and decode radio sequences.

Hi. Search for RTLSDR v3. The cheapest DVB-T dongles have the gap - look here osmocom.org/projects/rtl-sdr/wiki/Rtl-sdr

yes it can do it. You select manually the frequency you want to hear between 25-1750MHz

The antenna connector is NOT an "RCA" connector, it is an "F" connector. RCA connector is an audio connector, like on the back of a audio amplifier.

You did not really scan? You just put specific frequencies. A real scanner sweeps through min and max set frequencies, looking for transmissions. Like scanning from 400 to 470MHz. Can the application do that?

Lokalizowanie czegokolwiek wymaga tzw. anteny kierunkowej dostrojonej do danego pasma. Tak jest to możliwe ale nie w prosty sposób. Kluczyk musiałby co jakiś czas wysyłać dane - normalnie kluczyki aktywują się w odległości kilku metrów od pojazdu w celu gotowości do otwarcia drzwi pojazdu ( samochód wysyła "sygnał rozpoznawczy" do kluczyka a ten odpowiada identyfikatorem o ile jest właściwy i wtedy samochód rozbraja zabezpieczenia i otwiera drzwi). Jeśli kluczyk jest w większej odległości od danego pojazdu to nie odbiera sygnału z samochodu, ale jego sygnał może zostać podsłuchany i przekazany na odległość przez złodzieja - tzw. relay attack. Co do anteny kierunkowej - antena typu YAGI podobna do takiej : m.polish.uhfvhf-tvantenna.com/quality-10630900d-8dbi-directional-433mhz-antenna-lightweght-433-mhz-antenne-all-weather-operation

you may use dvb-t passive antenna with appropriate adapter (SMA) for rtlsdr dongle antenna socket. It should NOT have an amplifier. It maybe even Yagi type antenna

What about a phone with an internal radio receiver like a galaxy s9?

Even though the S9 is a great phone, it is still just a phone - it has fixed internal radio receiver to some particular bands like 900/1800/850/2100/2400/2600MHz along with internal antenna which is also designed to work with such bands. To cover full bands from 25MHz up to ~2GHz you need this USB dongle which is Software Defined Radio. It uses computing power of CPU inside the S9 to make Fast Fourier Transform to decode the signal from raw radio transmission. Because it is "software" you can tune it to any frequency you need (of course there are some limitations of chips inside USB dongle) and analyze the signal or capture it to some WAV format for further processing. You can also attach telescopic antenna with RP-SMA socket to USB dongle to tune directly to particular frequency (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whip_antenna). In comparision internal antenna of Samsung S9 is fixed to some frequency and cannot be modified , that is why you need external device attached to your smartphone.

@@justanengineer5599 Granted, however, apps such as NextRadio use a pair of wired headphones plugged into the 3.5 mm jack to tune FM (could be AM as well, would have to check). Given a suitable antenna plugged into the 3.5mm jack, what do you think?

Samsung S9 uses following chips : Qualcomm SDM845 Snapdragon 845 (USA) - www.qualcomm.com/media/documents/files/snapdragon-845-mobile-platform-product-brief.pdf , or Exynos 9810 Octa (EMEA). None of these chips supports Software Defined Radio function it is only FM Radio chip which operates on 87.5 to 108.0 MHz. APPs like "NextRadio" are using Samsungs API to access it : NAB FM API

Hi, My USB dongle was supporting only 25MHz+ so it is unable to listen to 4,625MHz frequency. However there are some hacks to reprogram it to lower frequencies like shown here : www.rtl-sdr.com/new-experimental-r820t-rtl-sdr-driver-tunes-13-mhz-lower/ or here www.rtl-sdr.com/direct-sampling-mode-hardware-modifcations/

Buy a tecsun pl 600. Much MUCH better sensitivity ( receives more signals that’s less strong )

Lakshay Narayan actually, if you have money get a 660. But it’s s little bit more sensitive. And has more features. I have it. Very happy. Good buy. Comes with air band too. But the 600 is awesome too but, if you can het a 660. You won’t regnet it with the features.

this is correct. I have only simple telescopic antenna and it is not efficient at all. However it is portable and suitable for most scenarios.

Hi, I would buy the antena with largest number of sections. Something like 6/7 section telescopic antenna would do just fine. Check if antenna has appropriate connector - must match your RTL-SDR dongle. Mine had RP-SMA male connector.

Using this application you can record the signal with no problem because it is a RF receiver. But to play it on the air you need a HACK RF tool which is RF transmitter. The RTL-SDR dongle is not a transceiver, it is only to receive signals.
