This is a quick little video to get you up and running with RTLSDR and HDSDR. It is by no means the end all tutorial, but will get you up and going if you want to listen to Short Wave.
I just bought this exact dongle today and was looking into what SDR software to use. SDR# didn't appeal to me but I liked the look of HDSDR so came to You Tube to look for videos on it and found yours. Thank you for making this. I knew nothing of SDR two days ago so this will be very helpful to get me up and running when my dongle arrives. Thanks Stu for your time and effort putting this together. Great camera angle and production.
Had your video playing on my desktop, installed the RTL-SDR on my laptop; exactly as you showed ( of course, I had to pause and play...) It all went smoothly. Thanks.
this remains and always will be, the best tutorial going, thank you stuart 😊 i now make a few happy hams eyes wide open to the wonderful world of sdr , you legend
I can't thank you enough for these instructions. I am thankful I ran across this video and walked through my entire setup. Sub'd your channel and looking forward to watching more videos.
Thank you, Stuart! I've had my HDSDR for about a week now. I was going to buy a Whistler TRX1E but I saw a video on a dongle and here I am. I've followed advice from so called 'experts' but I have learned nothing - unbeknown to me, I actually needed to download 2 types of software instead of the one I tried? By following your plain English guide, I am 'up' as of about an hour ago. Subscribed and liked accordingly!
Thank you for the video, Definitely Happy I came across this video I bought two of them one was RTL-SDR ,Hf ,.....and the other is a Nooelec mini 2 , new updated version...this one is the 24 mhz to 3.5ghz,,,uhf/vhf..side band , for Utilities, parks,&rec,, . You name it ,,Air bands , military air ,, ham nets ,, links ,,up and down converting sat photos ,weather, radar pictures,,, satellite communications,, up and down .links,, thank you 🙏 again for help me with the video I’ll see if I can brave through it..and install my Receivers .. l love it .
Thanks for the upload. The driver install etc all worked fine. I got the sw receiving, and did a little test with a pmr446, and with a bit of fiddling I could pic up my transmission. However, the rest of the video is pretty much unclear. You say "there you go, that's it" and I can't see what you have done, or what you have achieved. Also, this should be a video for Complete beginners to set up the kit they bought. Going off and working with your di-pole and tuner is not relevant to someone who has the 5" antenna that is supplied. Still well worth watching this vid as I got my dongle talking to the software. Still a lot to do to get it receiving correctly, but this is a few steps covered. Thank you.
Thank you for taking the time to do this video. Your info should get me set up OK. I just wish it were longer, so you had time to include the 'why' something is done in addition to the 'what to do'. I really like to understand what is going on instead of simply playing copycat. Then I will need to watch fewer and fewer 'How To' videos as time goes on.
Good questions, I think that due to the differences between normal and direct sampling as well as the mass difference in frequency between FM broadcast and HF, it would seem to be a bit fruitless. I have never tried it however and would be interested see how it went for you...
Thanks, this video was a God send, I am up and running now waiting for my inrad rx7300 mod so I can interface with my radio. Is there a video for that using omnirig? 73 de KD9AUY Stan
Hi Tony, This is a pretty old video so the version is also pretty old. The good news is the install is pretty much the same. Biggest difference is that the SDR settings are now accessed through a button. I'm currently running Version 2.8, and am very happy with it. Stu AG6AG
just new to this game , i thought your tutorial was excellent but i have a problem , my sdr screen is different to yours , i dont have the extlo button ?
Hi Richard, The EXT LO button is now the top button on the left set of buttons. They moved it for some reason. The actual settings are pretty much in the same spots though. Hope that helps! Stu AG6AG
Hi Vito, The one in the video has the raw output channel enabled by the manufacturer so you can get receive from 500 kHz to 1.7 GHz. The issue to be careful about is there are many brands of the RTLSDR dongles. Do your research! Stu AG6AG
Usually when I get them they come with a package of antennas and cables including arabittit ear set. I think they are $44 now so I doubt they come with anything now.
@9:50 I don't see the EXT-IO button on my HDSDR. I'm running the beta, and in the title bar, it does say EXTIO_RTL2832.dll@8bit. Is there something I need to configure on the main window to have the button? I should add that I'm also running my RTL-SDR with a HamItUp v 1.3 Plus upconverter.
Does the installation of the RTL-SDR and its drivers conflicts with the installation of the Perseus SDR and its drivers ? Because I wantto use the Perseus for HF (amateurs CW) and the RTL for VHF/UHF. .
I have the RTL-SDR installed with a pan adapter on a Yaesu 857D on the first IF. I take it you also need to instal the Yaesu CAT interface to control the radio?
@@AG6AG Thanks for the reply. I’ve now connected the CAT via USB. Have installed Omnirig but am Having an issue finding a port to connect to . Error message says port unavailable. Am getting there though. Thanks Mark (new call sign VK3XCC).
Here is the easiest way to figure out what com port is being created by the usb connection: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J9371IS52yQ.html Stu AG6AG
*HELP!* The only thing I could hear on my sdr using hdsdr are a couple of local FM radio stations in my country. I want to use it to monitor VHF and UHF frequencies. Is it my dongle or have I forgotten to do something?! Hope you can help me. Thanks.
Hi Angelo, You should be able to tune in VHF and UHF frequencies. Make sure though that HF Direct Sampling is disabled. This is required for anything over 50Mhz, and verify you have your Bandwidth set wide enough for FM Wideband. Hope this helps! Stu AG6AG
Installed as directed last night but the ext-io button isn't there but there is a button on the left that says rtl device. I'm not sure this has installed correctly any ideas??
Hi Pete, Just close all your programs and pull the RTLSDR out for about 10 seconds, then plug it back in. Then relaunch Zadig and follow the video instructions starting at about 4:50 into the video. Select the correct device this time and away you go! That should do it! Stu AG6AG
Turn off Direct Sampling and increase your sample rate to something around 25,000Hz. This should allow you to tune in and listen on the commercial FM broadcast bands. Hope that helps, Stu AG6AG
this vid is from 2018 and its an old version of win 10...look at the icons in the system tray and compare to yours...also if you have wireless keyboard and mouse beware.
Thanks for the information here but if I'm allowed some constructive criticism, it would be to turn the receiver down when demonstrating. It hurt my ears but when I turned the volume down, I couldn't hear your audio. You need to think about audio balance...unless you want deaf subscribers!
Yeah, the radio audio was really hot. This video was done before I really knew much about doing videos... The entire video is basically shot with a cell phone that picked up all the noise around the room as well as the laptop output. I've been trying to work more with the audio levels to produce a better experience for the watcher, but sometimes I still goof and end up with the radio a bit to hot. It's a constant learning process. Thanks for the comments! Stu AG6AG
To tell you the truth, I bought one and it's useless on HF. VHF and FM broadcast are fine but I'm pretty disappointed overall. I found out a short time ago that these things are notorious for poor performance on HF.
