Saponification is what happens when lye + liquid reacts with the fatty acids in the oils/butters, the end result is soap. If the soap is made correctly, there should be no lye leftover after the saponification has been completed. And as the posters have explained below, the curing/drying time is for excess water (or liquid) to evaporate from the soap creating a harder and longer lasting soap.

While I understand melt and pour is basically buying soap to make soap, your daughter's safety is important so M&P is a great option for you both. It's fabulous that you two make soap together, partly because it's a great mother-daughter activity, but also because you are teaching her about being an entrepreneur and being her own boss! I'm sure it's also helping teach her some independence and confidence as well. Love all of that! And as for buying soap to make soap, there's still a lot of customizing that can make them unique, be a great product, and make lots of customers happy. Best wishes and much success to you both.

@@EleveHandmade From what few reviews I have read, no one is telling you NOT to make your melt and pour soap. They are just clarifying that it takes lye to make soap, period. Melt and pour base is made with fats and lye, then taken a step further with the addition of alcohol to get the glycerin soap base that Sarah uses. It is much safer to use when you have little ones helping in the soap making process, but I think the main message is that you are saying you do not have lye in your soap.That is correct, because NO soap has lye in it. The chemical process occuring between fat and lye create "soap". No lye left over unless someone calculates a wrong recipe which is lye heavy. Then it is their problem, not a soap they should sell, or use. Nothing against you, but I have had people tell me they dont like home made soap because it has lye in it and they do not want to put lye on their skin 😤

Just want to clarify - the curing process for cold process is for the evaporation of extra water/liquid in the bar. The lye/oils are saponified within the first 24-48 hours, and is safe to use. Cure ≠ saponification.
@letisiaw75
@letisiaw75 2 года назад
Perfectly stated. I've seen many discouraged to use artisan home made soap because of the claim that it's " lye soap" & some that aren't educated about soap making don't want to use it because some makers claim that it's "lye free" to sell more. At the end of the day IT'S ALL SOAP. Some melt& pour bases have detergents added. If you're not making your own melt & pour H.P soap you truly don't know what you're making & or selling. Thank you for the clarification . The soap is perfectly safe to use. Once saponification ( lye+oils ) is achieved the soap no longer has lye. It's soap.

I noticed that during the double boil method of the melt&pour you added what seems to be a fragrance oil or E.O. I didn't see any checking of the temperature. Some E.O. & fragrance oils have a flash point of 190 up to 200F. If oils are added to a temperature over the flash point it will ruin the scent/ EO properties. Information for those who may not know. Happy soaping 😊

Flashpoint is usually misrepresented in many RU-vid videos. Flashpoint is actually the temp at which the oil can catch on fire. Your waxes and oils also have flashpoints as well. For safety and to not over heat the vapors always add essential oils as close to room temperature before the product your making hardens of course.

@@tylondondesigndesign970 Correct. There is no soap without lye. Melt and pour is a soap already made, saponified (process where the lye and the fatty acids mixed) and cured. That is why it is safe to use for kids and newbies as the only thing you need to do is melt and add fragrances, colorants and you can design your own. However, it requires some basics that people should read about before they start to do it, like adding fragrance when the soap is too hot. Hope this help.

Melt & pour is made into a base using lye (i seen that you mentioned that in a comment already), but the only problem with it is that it isn't a true soap, its classed as detergent, and is harsher on the skin than cold process soap made from scratch. In the UK, if it doesn't say soap on the label, then it isn't a true soap, and you'll see that with commercial supermarket brands like dove, imperial leather, etc, which will say beauty bar. Also, the list of ingredients in commercial brands and melt & pour are massive, synthetic, and has glycerin listed, compared to cold process which doesn't, and has very few ingredients listed, none of which are synthetic. On the up-side, melt & pour is kid friendly, and you can get really creative with it. I made it for 3 years before moving to cold process. The soap making forum is full of excellent resources.

Thank you so much for this video, I was looking for ways to make soap without sodium hydroxide a.k.a. lye. I've worked with Lye for years in the hair business, it's in a perm that straightens the hair called a hair relaxer. It is so caustic that is can cause permanent hair loss, and 3rd degree burns if not tended to properly on someone's hair, so I do not want that on my skin. I've used enough chemicals over the years and I really am working to do better. Making my own shampoos and body wash, so the next thing I wanted to look in to is making hair conditioners, and soaps. My mom is a cancer survivor, so I always try to come up with things that are more natural, and won't possibly trigger the cancer to come back. Your voice is gentle, comforting, and you explained everything right to the point. God bless you and your daughter's business, I think that is so sweet. You can't make soap without lye, not from scratch and all melt and pour soap bases are made using lye. Lye isn't as unnatural as many people think, it's basically common salt that's undergone electrolysis. The first soaps were made using potassium hydroxide lye. They made that by soaking the white ashes of hard wood fires in rain water then straining out the lye water from the chunky bits. Potassium hydroxide is still used in the making of liquid soaps. Any more natural than that then I can only think of using plant material that's high in saponins, like soapwort.

Technically you aren't making soap when you use melt and pour base soaps to create your soaps. The soap is already made (with lye). All you are doing is melting the base, and adding fragrance and colors, then pouring it into a mold to harden. You can use melt and pour soup immediately after it is unmolded. Handmade soap, using lye, needs a 4 to 6 week (sometimes longer) cure time.

I completely understand that working with the ingredients of soap is not safe for you right now... That being said, there is something very satisfying about making a recipe that you are extremely happy with. A lot of the characteristics that you talk about from the bases are things that you will be able to control once you start making your own soap. As far as the lye evaporating I totally get that. It sounds weird, but it is a super cool chemistry miracle that happens upon mixing these ingredients together. Once the saponification occurs. It is truly a different material, not like adding salt and water and getting salt water. It would be more akin to adding salt to water and getting birthday cake. Either way I'm pretty jazzed for you and hope that you continue kicking butt Thank you for your time

In the title it specifically states that she is making soap without using lye. She even gives a lengthy intro explaining why she doesn't use lye, which gives the impression a lye-free soap recipe is forthcoming. For someone new to soap making, I thought I was about to learn a new technique. However, simply using a melt and pour base does not constitute actual soap making. It's just an already made soap kit. While a fun child's project, it's not instuctional for those who seriously want to make their own soap. I would suggest getting rid of the long intro, rewrite the title, and actually put some effort into explaining the process of melting, coloring, and scenting the soap kit. That would be more useful for those who want a simple and fun diy project.

@Divine Valentin ... OP is using a MP base so her soaps completely bypass the "soap making process" which is called saponification (a chemical reaction that produces soap). MP base is essentially already-made soap that is reheated to add color and/or fragrance so there isn't a need to consider a gel phase - whether forcing or preventing. So no need to put in the fridge or let it "sit" and cure ... it's immediately ready to use after hardening. This process is MUCH safer to use around smaller children (and pets) as it lets someone else handle the lye and entire saponification process (~48 hrs). The videos you might be referring to are probably involving the CP method. Hope that helps! :)

Hello, you can not make soap without lye- but you CAN make soap without mixing the lye by using a melt and pour soap base! The silicone holder is from Amazon. I have a video on my channel that may help you decide between using melt and pour soap base (where you don't have to mix lye) and cold process soaping (mixing lye).. check it out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Vz52X96ngpA.html ❤️.

I'm an absolute newbie to the soap world and did a lot of research into the various methods before deciding I'd like to try the cold process lye method. The reason for this is that with these ready made bases, I dont know everything that has gone into them. Which means that if there are some nasties in there, that totally defeats the whole purpose of home-made soap. Plus they already have lye in them, so it's not like your soaps are lye-free. I wanted to make shampoo bars with lots of beneficial herbs, seeds etc that help to grow, thicken, volumise and detangle hair. Which means steeping all those goodies in water, putting lye into that water and saponifying it. I wasnt sure how I'd add all of these things to a soap base that is pre-made. How do you add rosemary, bay leaf or cloves etc to this method? Please could you outline all the ingredients that are in the soap bases? Thank you.

Hi! Unfortunately when using bases there isn’t much room for adding liquid ingredients. I would really stay around 1-2% additives total to ensure the bar solidifies correctly. Your ingredient outline is an excellent idea, I’ll add it to my film list! Thank you ❤️

This soap base was made with lye so it’s just the same but someone else did that before you purchased it. Cold process soap is safe to use after saponification has taken place which is pretty quick and the cure process just allows the water to evaporate from the soap making it harder. Hate to break it to you, but you can't make soap without lye. That stuff(soap base) you are melting is just soap made from lye already.The lye is transformed in the Saponification process, so there is no lye left over if it is done correctly.

@gezaatlo6739

Just to clear up the issues. The melt and pour soap base that is used here as already gone through the saponification process with lye. Anything that works like soap in the end does not have lye in it. Doesn't matter which process. I find it funny that cold vs hot soap making is an issue. If you are using lye and water, after the reaction has occurred wait until it cools, then is CPS. Don't know why some bother with using ice cubes, just wait for the lye solution to cool if that's what you're after. I find my soap saponifies quickest in a blender rather than a hand mixer, and it's contained and safer. Oil/fat, lye, water = soap which doesn't contain lye. This video uses a soap base that has already gone through the chemical process with lye, also meaning there's no lye in the melt and pour. Thank you
@EleveHandmade
@EleveHandmade Год назад

It's important to highlight that a melt and pour soap base is still made with lye- the difference is that you are not mixing the chemical lye in your workspace. As with all things in life, there is no 'one way fits all'. We each have our own preferences and plans as it relates to our business- which is what makes us unique. Personally, like I said in the video, I (currently) prefer to work with melt and pour soap so that my daughter can work with me. She's 7 years old and thinks that making soap is amazing. I'll continue to use melt and pour bases while we are working together until she is a little bit older. ❤️ Today's question: when you make soap, do you prefer to start with melt and pour bases.. or do you like to make it from scratch with lye?
