Today I am making my Grandmother's soft flour tortillas. This is one of the first recipe I remember learning as a child. I have listed the measurements and tips below. Making a soft tortilla takes practice and familiarizing yourself with what the dough feels like and the texture before your roll out the tortilla. My best advice is keep on trying and don't give up. Best wishes to you all on your tortilla making journey!
Welcome to Simply Mamá Cooks RU-vid Channel! I am a Mom to a blended Korean / Mexican American family that loves to share what I cook in my home. I am still learning and enjoy the process of making home cooked food.

*NEW SOFT FLOUR TORTILLA VIDEO* Questions Answered :)
• Soft Flour Tortillas R...
Here is the way I like to make my super soft flour tortillas just like my Grandma made them. These tortillas are perfect for burritos, wraps and tacos. The fat content in the recipe can be substituted with a healthy oil of your choice, butter or lard. If I had to give one tip to making good tortillas, it would be practice makes perfect. There are so many variables that can change the outcome, so hopefully with practice you can adjust and succeed making a great tortilla. Best of luck and don't give up!

2 tsp baking powder (7.5 g )
8 oz hot water (236.59 ml )

TIPS FOR SOFT TORTILLAS
*Be sure the dough is moist and slightly tacky before kneading.
*IF the dough is still too wet, add a Tbsp of flour at a time until workable
*Be sure to knead for 10 to 15 minutes dough should be smooth and soft after kneading
*Be sure to rest for 15 minutes to allow the gluten in the flour to relax which helps the tortilla to bubble while cooking
*Try to roll out your tortilla thin
*Over use of flour during the roll-out process may change the texture

I learned how to make tortillas almost 35 years ago from a co-worker. He was from Mexico. The youngest child of a large family. His daily chores included getting up early each morning to make tortillas. He told me that he would make 3-4 dozen per day. Said he started making them when he was 7 years old. He passed away long ago. Thank you Joe Flores from Winnemucca for teaching me. Thank you for the memories Gochujang Mama. Guess what I'm doing for breakfast this morning ? Yep, chorizo, papas y huevos and homemade tortillas.

Sweet memories. When I was 11 my good friend who was eldest of 5 children of single mom taught me how to make flour tortillas. When we got home from school every day we would work on homework together and start with making tortillas like these and some tasty suppers. We lived in various countries due to my Dads job and my mom picked up how to make lots of different foods from these various cultures. I think food breaks down so many barriers especially when it is made with love. Thanks for the video !

It truly is an art and I have fond memories of my grandmother making tortillas in her kitchen. Pioneer flour, handful of warm water, palm full of manteca (lard), pinch of salt, knead and pull off a chunk to rollout. She could make them in minutes.

I tried and tried to make soft and pliable tortillas for years until I found this recipe! Now I make them ALL THE TIME. Far superior to grocery store brands, and if I'm out of lard, I just substitute for 2 tablespoons softened butter and a 4th cup vegetable oil and they still turn out perfect! They can be used for anything you want. Tonight I made smothered cheesy beef and rice burritos and they fold up so, so easy...they even stay nice and tender after the burritos get a quick bake! So impressed, thank you!

When you were making the small dough balls, just looking at your hands reminded me so much of my grandma and doing the same motion when she would make fresh tortillas for dinner con unas rajas con queso or huevo con chorizo. It brought back some very nice memories thank you for that Edit: 6 min later. WoW. I so didn't know you were gonna make chorizo con huevo. Literally brought a tear 😢 to my eyes. For anyone else who might be relying on expired baking powder from the back of their pantry during this current situation… You can test to see if your baking powder is still good to use by sprinkling some in a cup of hot water. If it fizzes it’s still good!

Is the texture different when using manteca vs shortening? I know it would affect the flavor, not sure about the texture. These look so pliable and soft. Wondering if it was the shortening that did that?

Hello Everyone, I want to take the time to thank you for all the love and support of this video. Recently I had the comments disabled because the negative vulgar comments were overwhelming. I also wanted to say that if your tortillas come out too dry, the dough is too sticky or they don't come out soft then peruse the comment section for tips or check the description below this video. I have answered to the best of my ability and the answers you are looking for are there. I also want to address some comments that I receive about this recipe or myself. This recipe is the way my Mexican grandmother made her delicious flour tortillas. I love her flour tortillas and this is why I make them this way. I will not debate on the historical authenticity of flour tortillas or how you may think these are wrong. If you disagree with this recipe...move along. YOU TUBE is a giant universe with many tortilla recipes that may suit your cooking needs. The best advice I can give anyone is to practice. My measurements are not weighed therefore your cup of flour might be more than my cup of flour which may be the reason the tortillas come out drier or hard. It took me years to confidently make a good tortilla. I have eaten my fair share of dry hard tortillas...lol! Good luck, best wishes and happy cooking you guys. Keep searching for your perfect tortillas, share them with the ones you love and make lasting memories the way my grandmother did for my whole family. 💖

FINALLY A GREAT TORTILLA RECIPE!! This is exactly how I was taught from the rolling to the cast-iron skillet even the way you held a rolling pin using it on the main part and not the handles. My grandmother used a makeshift rolling pin from my grandfather … and she told me until I got her relieve him that I would have to buy me a rolling pen and unscrew the handles. I love to say that I have my grandmothers rolling pin therefore she’s with me every time I make tortillas.

@Nichelle543

Brit Brown , I think all I had was the great value brand of shortening and it turned out just fine. I literally did everything the way that she does it, step by step. I also know when I've tried to make them in the past that I didn't roll them out thin enough and that can cause them to be too crunchy. Also with the taste, just add a bit more salt and I've found that it does make a different. I really hope you try again and can get them to work because I promise you they are amazing and she has given us great recipe!!

This is the right way to make tortillas! A lot of people cut corners by not using shorting and by not putting in the extra work to mead the dough for a good while. When you make them this way they have a texture of a fluffy light biscuit and the tortilla is sooooooo soft because of the lard and the proper working time of the dough...a tortilla like this with just butter and garlic salt is heaven!

My mother always said that when making your dough if everything comes together in your bowl, and all the sides are clean then your dough is perfect. I've been watching your videos all morning. This video made me realize I've gotta subscribe. Such a good tutorial! Anyone who can explain the whys on anything bready has my vote! I used to live in L. A. and a neighbor made homemade tortillas every morning - she was originally from Honduras and had been making tortillas every morning for 47 years at that point . Your tortillas and your technique look just like hers. Great video - thanks very much.

Love your channel. Everything is so authentic and truly homemade. I always say “ If your gonna cook, you might as well take the time for homemade and use the very best ingredients.” Im not looking for shortcuts, I’m looking for great food and that always takes time and great ingredients. Love the way you cook!

Thank you for sharing your abuelita's tortilla recipe! 💕 They turned out soft and pliable and so good! Now I know what I've been doing wrong all these years. I didn't knead the dough before. Kneading makes the dough elastic and smooth so I don't need hardly any flour on the board when I roll them outThank you!! All this time I could have been making them like yours.
