this is the best video I have seen while researching soil block maker. I was thinking about getting plug trays yesterday 50 for $100, today I was reminded of the makers but dont really want/need to spend money on either. your method is less work and customizable to block size. Thank you. :)

So glad you found the video helpful! When my wife and I first considered making soil blocks we were looking into the same things as you. Not only are the soil block makers pricey but the trays can be as well. For example, we wanted to purchase trays made out of sustainable materials, such as stainless steel. However, the stainless steel trays we were looking at were $30 dollars each and they were not even that big. What I like about building your own trays out of wood is that you can choose the size you want and it can be cheap or even free if you use repurposed wood (i.e. Heat treated (HT) pallet wood). Blessings to you and your family and Happy Gardening!

You just gave me the solution. I've been thinking about how to do this and you gave it to me. You're not there yet, but you are So Close. You need one more tool. It's a frame that matches the bottom of your spacing frame, and has wires running across in the grid for your soil blocks. Pack your soil in, lift your spacer out, set the wire grid frame on top of the soil, push it down with the spacer frame. Presto! all the blocks cut to size in one pass.
@MrEunderwood

Glad I could help :) I've been considering what you are saying from the very beginning just haven't quite figured out how to make it work! It would have to be a thick enough wire so that the roots would not travel from one block to the next. I will figure it out soon! Thanks for watching and commenting. Blessings!
@rosetealatte9282

@@mayshomesteadchronicles You could use wire hangers. Thick enough, solid enough to really push through the soil, and easy enough to trim and crimp along the sides of the box.

Bro, just make the original walls that you packed it into, not attached to the plywood base. Then when you're done packing, remove the walls. Voila! Now you have all the space you need to cut and spread 1. Easy access for removal of blocks 2. and you never addressed how to get the blocks out with the walls attached and I don't see an easy way without losing a few of them. 3. Forget having to make that little rim liner insert. 4. Hope that didn't come off as rude... just honest what I see. Also I believe if there was parallel knife blades of say of 20-30 cm long spaced at whatever convenient size, it could greatly affect the efficiency of the cutting. I like where you're heading with this. The 4 cubes at a time machine is not fast

Hi, assuming the boxes might last a season or two - When cutting the sides and ends, put small cuts into the top edges of the wood at the spacing sizes you need. You won't then have to mark it with a pencil. The spacings can of course be made at the spacings you need for smaller or larger blocks ... Cramp 2/3 pieces togethe and make the cuts with table saw, hand saw, band saw, jigsaw etc. 🤙
@choimdachoim9491
@choimdachoim9491 3 года назад
A simple improvement would be having a removable bottom like a spring-form cake pan so you just set your box with the cubes on a brick, let the box sides drop to the ground and your cubes are standing free so you can easily pick each one up for transplanting. What you showed us reminds me of the problem I have every time I make Lasagna...trying to get the spatula to remove the first piece without crushing it sideways.

Great idea, however, my only concern would be that when you water the seeds/seedlings the water would leak out. They way I built my tray is to eliminate that issue. I used wood glue before screwing in the screws to outer sides. I do think there got to be a way to do what your saying and still not have to worry about the water leaking after watering. @@mayshomesteadchronicles You could use a router and route out a small groove along the inside of the bottom of the sides of the box. Slide in a thinner piece of wood as the bottom of the box.
