Abbi, I tried your raindrop stack rings and they came out wonderfully. I don't have much experience with saudering so I was hesitant but you made it look so easy that I couldn't resist. I love them and think you are AWESOME!! Thanks for sharing.

Just found your channel. I’ve been metal-smithing about 13-15 years - TBH The first year I just balled copper and silver for wire wrapped pieces and did some torch fired enameling. I’ve been sick for the last several years .. looking at my torches, rolling mill and machine press without energy. My time in bed though did lead to a lot of ideas. I’m ready to jump back in and I was so excited to find these rings… You are a great teacher … Thank you 🙏

Fabulous video! Thank you so much for the share! I am curious though ~ you indicated that you should only use the thinnest wire. What happens when you use a thicker gauge? I’d love to see them done in an 18 or 16 gauge ~ ! I’ve made balled rings where I’ve soldered the balls on the end of three pieces of 10 gauge wire that I had soldered to my ring size. Then separated the balled wires after rounding on the mandrel. But I’ve not tried this yet. They are so dainty! Again, thank you for sharing!
@creativebeadstudio7037
@creativebeadstudio7037 2 года назад
I don't think I heard "the thinnest wire", what I heard was thinner than 21 g is too thin and if you go thicker, you would need something more than the size torch she was using. With the torch she was using, gauge 21 gave the best results.

Sweet rings. Could you dip them in flux before torching it to reduce or prevent the fire scale or wouldn’t that help?
@AbbiBerta
@AbbiBerta 4 года назад
Yep, you definitely can do that, however I personally prefer the look of the rings after they’ve been hand polished with some of the fire scale remaining in the recessed areas. You could definitely use liver of sulfuric afterwards to get the same effect but I just like to skip extra steps where I can lol.

This is a great tutorial. Since stack rings fit like a wide band ring did you go up in size or did you stick with your normal ring size?
@AbbiBerta
@AbbiBerta 4 года назад
Great question! There is quite a bit of movement in these rings and they are pretty thin, so I find that I don’t have to size up at all, but thankfully with this ring design, if you find that they’re not comfortable, you can always hammer them a couple more times to get them just right.
@chrisfensome5891
@chrisfensome5891 3 года назад
These rings look so good stacked together and the great thing is you can alter the width and tightness of the band at will.
@user-tk6ln2lk9s

I'm a newbie so my question may sound silly. Did you flux the silver before hand? Also can you join them at the back with easy or medium solder so you don't loose them? Thanks so much for your video.

I can't recall, was that highly requested or was that on the lower end? I suggest you emphasize these things a little more because I as a watcher am more interested in how many people requested you create this video much moreso than I am interested in learning to make the ring. Could you do a few more videos specifically listing the names of the people who asked for this video to be made? And of course, in addition to their names I think the time/date that they made their request. What format they made their request with- ie internet/in person/smoke signals/morse code etc. I would really appreciate it as would a large part of the population assuredly. God bless you for being there for us, you are really amazing and so giving of yourself unto the people. I'll check back when you gift us the list video I proposed. 🤘🏴‍☠️

I tried to make the ring unsuccessfully. I may have done several things wrong. #1 I used 20 gauge ds and 20 gauge hh wire. #2 I used some stone tile pieces to work on( should this make a difference?) My wire fused but did not melt into a knot. My wire was Argentium silver. Was this the wrong silver to use?
@AbbiBerta
@AbbiBerta 4 года назад
Argentium silver behaves differently than Sterling Silver. The germanium in it doesn’t retain the heat as well as the copper in the Sterling Silver. You’ll likely need to hold your rings in a third hand, ball/twisted wire side down, and heat the twisted wire from below. That will give you a better shot if you’re attempting this project with something other than Sterling.
@jenniferduhon1699
@jenniferduhon1699 4 года назад
Abbi Berta Thanks for your reply! I am going to get some sterling silver and try again. Do you use half hard or dead soft?
@AbbiBerta

@gjk540
@gjk540 Год назад
Why didn't you pickle the silver? That is not "tarnish" on your rings. It's firescale and should be removed from the metal.

Ha, they’re really not that bad. I just have to do the long safety talk for liability reasons. Once you get comfortable with the torch, it’s like second nature. In 15 years of teaching metals classes, I’ve never once had a student burn themselves. I burn myself cooking way more often than I hurt myself metalsmithing and usually my jewelry making injuries are from sharp metal rather than hot metal.
