I didn't know you have stuffed cabbage rolls too in Japan.. stuffed rolls are a traditional dish in Eastern Europe.. love your version as well.. must have been delicious
+Home Cooking Adventure In Sweden it is called "kåldolmar" . It is a old traditional home cooking in sweden. The word kål is cabbage in swedish and dolmar is from the turkish dolma means "fill up". The old way to do in sweden is the mix with rice too.
I have been using this recipe and video for years. I love the music that goes with it. I always hum along and happy that I am about to eat one of my favourite meals. I turned vegan after starting to use this recipe and have "veganized" it since. Still love it and so do people who get to enjoy it with me. Thanks for posting this video and giving me one of my all time favourites.
Iam Ukrainian and have been known this dish recipe since my childhood. Your version is amazing!! great video and very easy to follow. Love your channel. Greetings from Australia
@Kelly Vincent its a very complicated question. if you look at Russia, what poor stage it is now , you would understand that Putin hasn't done anything for his country for those 20 years hes been in charge. There is no freedom of speech, no democracy . Prisons are full of innocent people who disagree with Putin. He is a new Hitler ( its his idol ). so why would he care about Bio Lab or culture or anything else, especially when its not even in his country?Hes after Ukrainian land and commodities, his hands are covered with blood of innocent people and children. US, and especially B family ,has been definitely involved in some dirty work over there but mainly in gas companies. BTW, US hasnt given 40+billion yet, its only bla bla.
TabiEats we call it in Germany,Kohlrouladen,TabitEats & it´s typical german dish like our braten,:P click the image pls. www.lecker.de/media/redaktionell/leckerde/kochen_2/fleisch_1/kochkurse_1/kohlrouladenrezept/hbv_1412/kohlrouladen-rezept.jpg
Rebecca Keller I miss eating German food. The first time I went to Germany, I fell in love with the variety of breads and cheeses. I also ended up getting addicted to sauerkraut for some reason. haha
TabiEats You´re right,here is paradise for breads & cheeses.And geez the smell of sauerkraut,terrible! (((o(*゚▽゚*)o))) .Happy Weekend Shinichi-san & Satoshi-san,enjoy it,hugs both of you! \( `.∀´)/
+Rebecca Keller The European Mediterranean is the paradise of breads and cheeses. It's also the birthplace of cabbage rolls which are just one of the many stuffed and wrapped dishes you'll find there.
I love cabbage rolls, i will try these, I dont use tooth picks though i tuck my ends into meat and I get 2 cabbage rolls out of the bigger outside leaf, In my recipe I mix rice in the meat also. and I cook in a tomato sauce and put unrinsed sauerkraut all over top before cooking, these are a big thing at weddings in PA where I grew up.
+marcy uhutch Same for me, my husbands grandmother, who was of Jewish decent made these the same way with rice and a tomato sauce. Love them and still make them myself today.
It takes longer than 5 minutes to steam cabbage in boiling water. Also, I add ground sausage, and tomato soup rather than diced tomatoes. Something else I tried.....putting them in the crock pot...so much easier and the flavors blend really well. I want to make them now!
i made this last night for my mums birthday dinner as its what she wanted. and it turned out amazing! only thing we did was double the recipie and used half n half minces. we had a huge cabbage and still only got 12 rolls out of the mixture but they were big fat cabbage rolls. it was a hit with the whole family. it is a timely and fiddly process but it is well worth it at the end.
+Namiko Chen (Just One Cookbook) Thank you. I'm sure she would appreciate that. left overs the next day were fantastic too. this is definitely something I'll do again in the future. thank you.
I look forward to seeing a different version of this. I have had hungarian cabbage rolls where my mum and her partner at the time pickled their own cabbage leaves. It was amazing.
I did it, just now and turned out delicious, my husband and his dad was surprised because i'm not european but know how to cook this food. Thank you for sharing, it's similar to my mom's recipe. Keep on sharing 🤗
My mother use to make stuffed cabbage but with a sweetened soy sauce broth instead of the traditional tomato base then serve with rice. I've never tried the regular version. Thank you for this recipe.
I HAVE to comment, i made these the other day, to a t by your recipe, and they are SO fantastic! I shared some with my mom and i’m finishing them up today and i can’t believe how great they are. Saving this one and sharing!
I didn’t know that stuffed cabbage with tomato sauce is usual in japan! I have a really nice Japanese cookbook and I made cabbage rolls today from that book but it was way more different! The author didn’t use white cabbage but kale. And the broth was made of dashi, sake, soy sauce, mirin and water from the kale leafs I cooked previously. The filling just contained ground meat, chopped onions and shiitake and a little bit of cooked rice. It tasted really „Japanese“, it was suuuuper tasty!!! This seems more westernized but I’m sure this version is delicious as well Gonna try this one!
Wow! Everything you create looks delicious! I am running out of words to describe your work. Once again, thank you for sharing your creations with everyone!
Just made this . It was so delicious n liked by young n old. I only added a tbsp of sugar to reduce the sourness of the tomatoes. The pièce de résistance I hv to say was the butter. I nearly forgot this last step. The butter made the sauce richer n glossier. 👍🏼Thx Namiko. ❤️
Thank you for sharing all your wonderful cooking with step by step pictures and instructions. I truly love your blog and use your recipes anytime I need one!
I followed your recipe and my ukrainien husband loves it. He claims it should stuff with rice and mince meat like in Ukraine, I said we don’t put rice inside in Japan and Taiwan. Yes, every country has slightly different version but this version so delicious for sure. Thank you
i am making cabbage rolls for the first time tonight. but didnt want to do the tomatoe sauce on top. this is more delicate. i think i will use this instead. lovely tutorial.
I've never watched a cooking video and been inspired to make it. Yours is the first. Congrats! I'm going to actually try this. I'll have to follow you now and try more.
looks lovely, Nami, reminiscent of dolmades in Greece as well, but so glad there'is no rice, as I have started living on a low-carb diet which suits me very well. I shall certainly try it with my own home-grown cabbage!
Wonderful, I love it, this is so amazing! I really appreciate and enjoyed the Japanese version of this and to compare to the traditional cabbage rolls I'm used to, so this was fun and made it more exciting to change it up. Thanks, great recipe!
It is amazing to see that this recipe is also made in other countries! I always knew this meal because my mum made the polish version. I wonder how the other versions taste!
Japanese version doesn't include the rice, and I thought it's interesting as we eat rice yet Japanese version didn't include the rice. We eat this with steamed rice in Japan. :D
I just tried this one. It's as deli as it looks. I made a little mistake though and I got a small cabbage, thinking I didn't want to have half of it lost. Bigger leaves work better. Also what I had left of the mix of the pork I used it to make burgers and store them. Anyway, nice one!. I especially like the touch of the white wine flavor in the sauce
+Mache Love I froze my left over cabbage and used it later in making cabbage and corned beef. It was still good. I always look online to check how to safely freeze any foods that I'm not sure about. Thank you for the idea for left over pork! I'll do that next time. Have a great day!
These are my favorite when my mom would make them, personally the polish way is the best but i'm sure all the other ways are great too! My mom would just use a can of generic "Tomato sauce" from the store and it's delicious once it has been cooked with the cabbage rolls
Loved your recipe. I ended up using spaghetti sauce and I think it added a little something extra. Please keep up the excellent work. I really appreciate it.
Good recipe, but I didn't know what panko was, but thanks to my friend google now I know it is "Panko is a Japanese-style breadcrumb traditionally used as a coating for deep-fried foods such as tonkatsu". Thanks for the recipe , I've wanted a new recipe for Cabbage for ages.
my family is from croatia and we use rice in the mixture of usually pork and beef mince. we really focus on the broth and usually have hocks at the bottom of it and will make the broth for a day before. i liked cabbage rolls because they taste better the older they are.
+Zoe Goldschmidt some ppl like all that detail. Some ppl are not 'fluent' in kitchen speak. So its good that she put it in there for the others. You fluent ppl are smart enough to take what you need from it.
Interesting didn't know other countries do it as well :) In Turkey wie do the rolls way much smaller - goggle lahana sarma :) - and we use rice in it some like it with meet and some without, the difference is I think we blend the onions and put in the mixture tomato paste with cumin, mint and parsley. But well I will try that one as well
Don't watch Nami videos when hungry!!!!!! no, no, no! おいしいです!!!!!!!!........will be making this when the kids visit this weekend ( I use veggie burgers instead of ground beef)
First, can you be any more frikken' gorgeous?! We were planning our regular girls only (no men allowed!) weekend at my father's cabin in Lake Tahoe, and as usual we squabbled over what to make for dinner, so Google saved us and we found you! Gawd, this is an amazing recipe. We don't understand how 26 idiots did not like this. They obviously did not try it. Anyway, with this recipe, a few finger foods and way too much wine, we had one of the best times together, eating, drinking and sharing our lives with each other! And we owe it all to you. You now have a subscriber for life!
ahh, this recipe is very similar to the traditional Polish stuffed cabbage (gołąbki). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kJ4qg1BHk8A.html But similar recipes can be found throughout Europe.
oh my,it looked so yummy and healthy but unfortunately some of the ingredients cant be found at my country :( i really want to try this recipe , this channel never dissapoint me.. always make me drooling ;)
Just One Cookbook Panko and nutmeg , tqsm for replay ❤️😍 , and may i ask a question? Can i use chicken instead of beef ? Cuz i allergic to beef. And can i not add white wine ?
I am a huge fan of your channel! I've enjoyed all the recipes that I have tried! Thank you! Juts one question, what kind of knife do you use!? It's a beautiful Japanese chefs knife!
This is very very similar to one version of the traditional Hungarian stuffed cabbage. Beyond that the meat mixed with rice instead of cabbage cubes. But the seasoning is different, mostly garlic and pepper.
So the only thing Japanese about this recipe is the panko? My mother and I always made this using a mixture of ground pork, beef and veal, with white rice in the mix, and we baked in the oven with the dish covered in foil. No need to use toothpicks, just place them seamside down and pack them in the dish tightly. No idea where our particular style of cabbage roll comes from, we're from the US Deep South, though. :)
And no rice. I thought that's the interesting part as Japan is a rice country.... yet we skip rice from the traditional cabbage rolls! In Japan we have many variations, soup being dashi (to make it more Japanese style) or different soup base. I didn't know this dish wasn't originally Japanese as it has become such a common food in Japan when I was growing up. :)
