Everyone has heard that sunscreen prevents skin cancer.
Some research suggests, though, that the chemicals found in conventional sunscreen actually do more to cause cancer than to prevent it.
Not only do the chemicals absorb into the skin and interfere with our hormones, sunscreen blocks the Vitamin D from the sun, which our bodies rely on to support immune function that keep degenerative diseases, like cancer, at bay.
Vitamin D is one of the most common deficiencies in our country, and most people are coming up short.
Basking in the sun, during the hours which it is not at its peak, is actually a very healthy practice to keep our vitamin D at healthy levels.
Unless we are going to be at the beach all day, during the hottest hours, I skip the sunscreen all together.
However, burns are not a good idea, so if we are going out for several hours during peak exposure, I keep this healthy homemade version handy.
For this recipe you will need:
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup shea butter
1/4 cup beeswax
1/4 coconut oil
1/4 cup non-nano zinc oxide
1/4 cup cocoa butter, optional
10 drops lavender essential oil
Put all ingredients, except zinc oxide and lavender essential oil, in a glass bowl and place over a pot with a little boiling water in the bottom.
Heat until melted.
Allow to cool before adding in zinc oxide and lavender.
Whisk in the remaining ingredients.
I just left mine out on the counter for a few hours, going over occasionally to give it a whisk. This gave it a whipped effect without me actually having to use my mixer.
Try to use as few dishes as possible because this stuff is very water resistant and hard to clean.
Its great when your kids jumps in the pool and it doesn’t wash right off, but not so great when you are making a batch.
It smells oh so lovely.
Enjoy!

Red raspberry seed oil is an alternative to the olive oil, as it can increase the SPF factor. I've been making my own sunscreen, with a recipe very similar to yours, to much success. I am very fair skinned, and haven't had an issue with burning. That said, I do use Babo botanicals face sunscreen, bc the skin on my face is very sensitive and the homemade stuff was making me breakout.

I just found your channel and I immediately subscribed. I love to do things natural and minimal! Thank you for this recipe! I'm definitely going to try it out next summer. The natural mineral based sunscreens at stores are so expensive and I found we went through it so quickly. So I'm hoping I can create a cream that is easier to apply and will last us longer. Have you ever compared it to store bought natural sunscreen?

Thanks for this recipe/video. I developed a sudden allergy to sunscreen and nearly died when it first hit because it came with no warning or prior problems. Doctor said no more sunscreen for me since they could not determine what tripped the allergy. This ought to be safe, though!

They never could say definitively, but did say it was likely one of the chemicals. They said to avoid all sunscreen since they didn't know for sure. It was real bizarre and unexpected. I'd used sunscreen up until then, but I had a reaction no one could explain and had to stop.

I wonder if it would be possible to make something like this with a light lotion or even something like baby powder as a base. Oil as a carrier just doesn’t work at all for my face. I tried just about every organic mineral sunscreen available and they are all way to ‚heavy‘ for me. Would the effect be the same, if I just padded a powder mixture with zinc oxide into my skin?

Lauren Fry honestly I don't remember specifics. We found out rather early on in his young life and now he is 12. I would think if it was the Titanium Dioxide and it’s in toothpaste that we would have seen some reaction. Also I have used Zinc Oxide as a diaper rash cream without reaction. I am stumped! I am going to try and reach out to the Peds Derm to seek answers.
@spring6457

I'm an advocate for Natural DIY recipes but sunscreen should never be made at home. Leave this to the experts in their field. Sunscreen is notoriously difficult to formulate correctly. It is not as simple as mixing an amount of zinc oxide into a base. Without lab testing you can not guarantee SPF or stability of product. Degradation of product over time will be a problem. I would NEVER use this on my kids, my self or any one I know. You may be prepared to take that risk but please don't encourage others to do so. There are plenty of natural sunscreens on the market to purchase that have TGA or FDA approval. DIY sunscreen is irresponsible and dangerous!

I really like your channel but this concerns me. I think your straying into an area your not qualified to discuss. If you want to use this on your family that's fine but you should issue a disclaimer before advising others to use it. To make the statement that all conventional sunscreens contain endocrine disrupting chemicals is incorrect and misleading. I use a a high protection mineral sunscreen that i was advised to use by a skin cancer professor after 3 members of my family were diagnosed with melanoma.
@FarmhouseonBoone

@thechickincharge1073
@thechickincharge1073 6 лет назад
Possibly, you folks need to do your homework. It is SUNSCREEN that causes cancer, not the sun. The sun is necessary for our health and survival, we just don’t need to look like leather to be healthy or to get sun poison from not having the sense to cover up. The PROOF is out there for those who want the truth...seek and you shall find....😉
@amandacaruso9875
@amandacaruso9875 6 лет назад
I’d be curious to see credible research from peer-reviewed medical journals that supports some of the claims you’ve made. Most any physician or dermatologist would advise against forgoing sunscreen, even in non-peak hours of sun exposure. Also, many of the supposed risks associated with say, parabens, are largely suppositional and not supported by science.
@Giastew4321
