Made a few teapots about a month ago only one out of three turned out to be fit for purpose. This video definitely helped me figure out what I did wrong on the other two. I never felt so called out lol. My teapots ended up having a horizontal spout, the glaze blocked almost all of the holes in the spout, and when I fired the pots one of their lids fused to the pot. Teapots are no joke and are very difficult. Ultimate respect for you Floridian! Thank you for showing me the correct way I’ll try this in the studio next time!

Happy New Year! Great video - I never tire of seeing how people make teapots. Especially the truly functional ones. My favourites are 1, 4, and 14. All are the shorter, straighter-sided versions and I think this is because the squarer shape of the body visually fits with the lid and doesn't look weighted down by a relative thickness and overhang if the lid. Sometimes when looking at the taller teapots my eye is really interrupted by the "chunkier" lid and it seems like it is pressing downwards while the body of the pot is flowing upwards and my eye gets stuck at the juncture.

11 is my favorite! The angles and proportions just look pleasing to me, though I don't know why. It looks almost like a 50/50 ancient and modern design, almost like a continuity from ancient to modern in one pot. It's beautiful.

@Grim1of2
@Grim1of2 8 месяцев назад
You don't need to be scared of what people say about your pots, it's not a criticism of you personally! If you're just beginning in pottery, it's quite a long learning curve, and you'll find that there will be a vast difference in the the way people evaluate your work. On the one hand, those who have no idea about the process or the time it takes may be quite blunt in their criticism of what they see, but at the other end of the scale, those who have a greater appreciation of your craft will give a better appraisal of the work. The other thing that might be a difficult is that there's no learning unless you can accept the errors and dissect them thoroughly and see what can be learned, so next time a piece is made you'll know that you've improved by either doing something or not doing something you did before. It's all about incremental gains, and the most valuable thing I've learned is not to be too precious about the work, each piece made is a stepping stone towards the next piece which will be incrementally better. You'll get to where you're going, trust me!

You know that feeling where somebody shows you a simpler and obviously better way of doing things that you can't believe you didn't figure out on your own? Checking the lid fit with the lid still on the wheel is like that. I'm sure these detailed videos are an immense amount of work but sometimes it's the little, "obvious" detail things that can be a big help.

Oh wow Florian, fantastic video! As ever, thank YOU so much! Of course all are wonderful, but I'm going to discipline myself to one favorite. Hmmmm... It's no 8 for me. It seems there are three explorations going on here. One is the traditional "cafe" tea pot with its stout, sturdy proportions. Second is the tea pot as amphora, or vice versa. Thirdly, both themes are executed through you're aesthetic lens of crisply delineated primary and secondary volumes - sometimes playfully inverted on the vertical axis. With No. 8, all three are playing off one another in both purpose and harmony. I love how the stepped line at the top receives the top handle attachment, and how the mid-point of the spout attachment keys into it; the conical stepped volumes created have a monumental stupa/tumulus vibe. The eye is vectored down to what FEELS like the center of gravity there at the midline break, which not only captures the spout's lower aspect, but also dances with the handle's lower attachment. And the lid seems to to float magically above it all, it's proportions spot on. Nice work, Florian!

200-400£, that's a price I couldn't afford, but It's totally justified as you've shown in this Video. After all hand crafted with Quality has It's value. I really love numbers 14 and 15 and very reasently I made a tea pot that was a little unconventional useing a bottle as the main container instead of makeing holes for the spout instead the hole was made for where the lid sits and I attached the foot by throwing and then attaching. Then for the handle I did one little loop on each side of the hole for the lid and for the main handle I made a really big blank so I could attach it to one of the loops with little work so the other loop is also pretty easy. Now the most important part is taking a indentation ball tool and making all the dots connect so they might not be perfectly circular. After that i got my ceramics teacher to spray a thin layer of black then a slightly thicker layer of sea foam green so that all the high points in the edges of the dimples slightly darker and the sea foam flowed nicely into the center of each dimple. Hopefully creating a art show winner.
