Let's make the Holster that Gene Barry wore in the 50s TV series Bat Masterson. A plain black leather cross draw that holds a 4-3/4" nickel, Single Action Army revolver. I made a few mistakes with this one but was able to salvage it with the addition of an extra thick welt, a little wet molding and a little prayer too!
The leather was sourced from Weaver Leather Supply. Check them out and order tons of it through my affiliate link! (I get a small cut):

...when I was a kid (50s/60s) there were Bat Masterson toy gun kits - with that cool cane (I need a cane now) that had a hollow finial where you could stash secret messages - written in code of course...

I saw one of those sets (minus the cane) at an antique shop last year. I considered buying it, but the revolver just wasn't the same as what he carried in the show. I hope your cane is every bit as cool as his was. Thanks for watching!

Excellent video, Richard! I recently was able to borrow the book "Packing Iron: Gunleather of the Frontier West," by Richard Rattenbury, through interlibrary loan, and I have been poring over it. I don't know if you've seen that book, but it's a wonderful resource on holsters, gun belts and other leather goods, both civilian and military. Unfortunately, it's a very expensive book, but I was happy to get it from the library.
@SmallCaliberArmsReview
@SmallCaliberArmsReview Год назад
I have! In fact, I just picked up a copy from ebay last week. I got a pretty good deal on it compared to what I've seen it go for. WOW! Very cool book and I'll probably be making a holster or two from it! Thanks for watching!

@@SmallCaliberArmsReview That's awesome! I've been taking pictures of some of the holsters I want to copy someday. One thing I found interesting is how flat most of the tooling is compared to current methods. Of course I realize some of it has flattened out because of age and use. But some really beautiful leather work was done in the Old West.
@SmallCaliberArmsReview
@SmallCaliberArmsReview Год назад
@@8626John yes it was. I'd like to do some more holsters with tooling. Most of my videos have minimal tooling like boarders and such, I need to do one that's fully hand tooled.

You may not be a, "Professional" holster Maker, butt in my opinion you make a pretty good holster. Also you make good videos and for me at least from the right era, ( I have made a holster for a Glock but only under duress) anything after about a 1911a1 is just not my cup of tea. As I said good video thank you.

Thanks, I greatly appreciate that! I've made a couple holsters for newer firearms but they just don't have that same style or coolness that the Cowboy rigs have. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching too!

With all the good stuff you do how come you went cheap on the grips ? Why not use real stag ? I mean it’s a nickeled revolver, you do great leather work, Hmmm… I have a similar holster(s) they have just a plain loop sewn in the middle of the back of the holster Ricky from IBM
@SmallCaliberArmsReview
@SmallCaliberArmsReview Год назад
The Ivory grips I made were going to be jigged for this pistol, just to do the Bat Masterson setup. After making them, I couldn't bring myself to cut them up to make them look like stag. The grips that were originally used on Bat's rig were actually a cheap plastic that were really popular in the Hollywood Western era, I just couldn't find the proper ones. I have looked at Stag, bone, and antler on places like ebay and after remembering the smell of working with it in the past, I just really didn't want to mess with it again. I have every intention of putting the faux ivory ones back on the nickel revolver, they look great on there and I fit them to that pistol anyway.
@k4vms

@@SmallCaliberArmsReview what’s wrong with authentic stag ?
@SmallCaliberArmsReview
@SmallCaliberArmsReview Год назад
@@k4vms Oh, nothing. I just don't like the smell of it when it's being tooled, other than that, it's great.
