Video walk through with directions for an easy to build AM FM antenna.
A simple antenna design I found on the internet, once you find the right spot you will have decent reception from stations 50 to 75+ miles away.

For long range AM reception during the day connect an 80-120 turn coil of 26 AWG magnet wire wrapped on a paper towel tube to a 250 ft longwire, ground the other side of the coil and place it near a small radio. You can also connect the coil to two longwires without a ground with great results. Wrap coil close wound with no overlap of turns. Lightning likes these antennas so be careful! I always stretched the longwires out through the bushes or draped them over the lower tree limbs. You can also get one up vertical in a tall tree by tying a fishing weight to a rod and reel then throw it over the top of the tree then tie wire to line and pull it up into the tree. When not in use keep wire outside your window so lightning doesn`t come inside your house. Any type of insulated wire will work.

This is how i got better reception for my receiver AM and FM stations. Measure from the back of your receiver to the bottom of your floor and add a few inches to it. Then cut speaker wire to that length you measured and make sure you add enough speaker to spread on the floor. Split the speaker wire in 2 pieces one for positive and one for negative. Then trim then trim the ends off to fit into the back of the receiver. Then put the 2 ends into the inputs one positive and one negative and run the wire all the way down the back touching the floor. I could not get any AM reception nothing but buzzing before this but as soon as the wire touched the floor i got good reception. The closest AM station is about 60 miles away and it worked for me. Now i set this up in my big unattached garage with a concrete floor and like i said it worked for me. I tried this pole thing and it did not work all i got was buzzing and could not get one AM station and by accident i found this worked for me. Now for FM i did the same process but i found out by hanging the wire up above the back wall worked better for FM. See if it works for you.

My Sony stereo receiver has similar antenna connections to the back as yours, but it has one positive port for FM antenna, and one positive and one negative ports for AM antenna. The FM antenna that was included with the stereo was simply a thin silver wire about 2-3 feet long, that you attached to the positive port provided for the FM wire. The manual said to just lay or extend the wire horizontally along the stereo. The instructions however also show how to attach an antenna to an outside aerial antenna, using both the positive port for FM, and the negative port for the AM antenna, to serve as the ground, plus there is also another little screw for a ground wire close to the antenna ports, similar to how your receiver is (you can see the ground wire screw in your video as you attach your antenna). My question is, can I just take the positive - or gold - wire from the speaker wire I have, and use it as a single wire antenna by connecting it to the single FM port? And therefore discard the negative - or silver - wire? How much of a difference would that make for reception strength? Also, with it being speaker wire, it is encased in a clear plastic insulation: did you remove the insulation from your wire before using it? I've read where the insulation can interfere with signal reception, as that's partly what the insulation is intended for, for speaker wire. Did you strip your wire of it's insulation? It doesn't appear in the video that you did. The insulation for your wire looks very similar to mine (I have 18 gauge wire) - how does your wire work? Thanks!
@WrenchHands
@WrenchHands 5 лет назад
To hook up your antenna you should hook up both the positive and negative. If there is only a single positive wire input for the FM, just connect the negative for the antenna into the ground on the AM input. Without a ground wire you will most likely get alot of static and interference. My antenna works pretty well but if not properly grounded it will not have very good reception. The only stripped parts of the antenna wire (speaker wire) are the ends that go into the stereo and the ends that wrap around the end of the metal pole. It's not mandatory that you have a metal pole though, it just helps with grounding the wire. With the materials that I used I am able to pick up stations up to 40-75 miles with fairly high quality. Hope that will help you. If you have any more questions just ask.

@WrenchHands 5 лет назад
If your stereo has seperate AM /FM inputs, I think you should be able to just take the end of the antennas wires that connect to the stereo and twist on 2 positive and 2 negative wires with either ends of the wire stripped off. (Wrap the connected ends of wire with tape so they stay together) This will give you another set of wires to connect to both AM/FM from the same antenna.
