How to make THE BEST Betta Fish Tank | You Suck At Fish Tanks

It usually takes longer than a week to cycle a fish tank. I usually use pre-existing filters and filter mediums which speeds things up very quickly. But the point here is: DONT LET TIME DECIDE WHEN YOUR TANK IS CYCLED. Yes, the average first fish tank will take from 4 to 6 weeks to properly cycle. Still, test the water before making any ultimate decisions. After kickstarting the cycle by introducing ammonia and bacteria culture, test the water until you start getting readings of 0 ppm ammonia, 0 ppm nitrite, and approx.

New rule of thumb: if you can slap your tank and it falls off the table, it’s too small for fish 😉

I love my betta in his tiny 15 gallon, fishless cycled, heavily planted, natural gravel and stone arch tank. I’m a new fish keeper, I did huge amounts of research before even getting my first set up. Thank you to all good aquarium artists who gave me great advice.

Honestly after watching this video I feel so much more educated. I do have my betta in a 15 gallon fluval flex tank with a nice submersible heater. I have made sure there’s nothing in there that can cut him such as soft neon anemones in gravel, a coconut hide, bright decor (that’s soft), and a leaf hammock. However I’m still a baby betta owner, and this is making me realize I need to simulate his natural habitat more instead of making it look like a nightclub 😭 Edit: My boy Jax now has fluval stratum for substrate, rocks, driftwood, and live plants 🥲 I’ve officially leveled up as a Betta owner

i love how you just made a proper fish tank so easily from what looks like under 10 mins (minus the cycling) and yet there are some people who refuse to do something as simple as this for their fish. Great video, i hope more people see this.

So FYI, the nitrifying bacteria doesn’t reside in the tank water, it mostly resides in the filter media, tank substrate and the surfaces of your tank decor.

I adore this video. The snarky commentary is wonderful, thank you. I have three tanks of my own as well as three bettas of my own (two males and a single female) all of which are in planted tanks. I did only just start getting interested in Aquascaping maybe a year or so ago, so my stuff doesn’t look nearly as good as what you’ve done, but I can safely say that the plants are thriving and growing like crazy and my fish babies are all really happy. The only issue I run into is with my ten gallon tank with a male king koi betta. I’m not sure if it’s the lighting strength or hell, maybe I’m over feeding, but I do struggle with algae problems in that ONE tank. Everyone is fed the same stuff and the same amount, water changes are all done on the same scheduled days and the same amounts, but that tank is the only one that has this issue. I’ll admit that I have a five gallon with a female koi betta and her snail friend (don’t judge me okay, they’re friends and she loves checking on her tank buddy every so often), a three and a half gallon with an elderly male veil tail that wants to murder/fight everything and everyone and was an unplanned adoptee because my mother was unprepared to truly take care of a fish (she’s a teacher and wanted a fish for school. She was extremely receptive to me showing her what all a betta really needs in terms of space, heat, environment, etc though so mad props to her for that. She asked me to go with her and help her provide a better home for the fish and eventually realized it’s a lot more responsibility than what she first thought and asked if I would take on the fish. Queue Murderer being brought into my “family”. He was originally in the five gallon, but eventually I moved him into a smaller sized tank because he’s on the older side and had a harder time getting around because of the excess finnage (I know it’s not an actual word. I didn’t know what else to use) in combination with the filter within the five gallon making it a little bit more difficult for him to reach the surface on one side of the tank, so instead of him over exerting himself, I went ahead and bought a tank with a much more gentle filter and a little less in terms of space. If I could, I’d keep him in a five gallon that was a little longer than what’s typically standard so he could more easily access the surface if he wanted, but that’s not a thing unless I built it myself. I will say that there has been a drastic improvement in his activity and overall personality though. He was spending so much time and energy getting around in the five gallon that he’d kind of just sit around most of the time because he was worn out, but now he explores and swims around a lot more. He still has plants to hide in and hard scape of course and a heater, I just wanted him to be able to spend the last of his days with me in as much ease and comfort as possible. Even if he is a jerk and is the only betta I’ve ever had that’s so standoffish and aggressive and wants to fight me every morning when I feed everyone. 🙃 Seriously though, I’m sorry for the long comment. I just really love fish and fish keeping and end up rambling. Thank you for the videos though my dude! We all adore them!

As a kid i had bettas in bowls. Now I have a betta in a planted 10 gallon, heated and filtered with snails (my favorite is the Swazili rabbit snail!) Im very proud of my tank, I recently upgraded from 5 gallon to 10. When i showed my therapist, she told me about her vase tank and it made me so sad she had no idea how bad that is 😭

This is awesome and informative but I have one suggestion. I think the rocks take up an unnecessary amount of space that significantly diminishes the aquarium size and becomes wasted space. Instead, you could use a cave-like decor (curved driftwood, pipes, caves, etc.) so it's still a usable/accessible space for the betta to go in. Also bettas like having a dark space they can hide away from the light.

Ok I was not expecting that intro😂 when I saw that little tank my heart sank and I was thinking what on earth is this guy on. I loled

I have fish, and I encouraged my sister to get a betta. She got a betta but she didn't have much money to get an entire tank for her betta, so she got something small. She got one of those tanks that are "made" for bettas although they're also too small for bettas. After I started learning more about my fish, I thought it'd be cool to learn about her fish too. So then I found out that her betta needed more than rocks and pebbles and a much bigger tank, so I tell her "I found out that your betta needs a bigger tank from maybe 5 gallons to 15 gallons, and she needs more natural things in it to make it feel more like a habitat for her." And my sis it like "No, she's fine." IT MAKES ME SO ANGRY. NO IT IS NOT FINE. I understand she has like no money anymore, but when she gets a job (which is soon) she should consider getting a bigger tank and more natural things for her fish.

6:04, 7 days is a completely arbitrary length of time. It can take up to 8 weeks to cycle. Want to do it properly? Step 1 - Watch a RU-vid video on the nitrogen cycle so you know what you're doing. Step 2 - Buy a Master testing kit so you can test for Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate. Step 3 - put some fish food in your tank every few days and test the water every few days. When your Ammonia is '0', your Nitrites are '0' and you have some Nitrates. Your tank is cycled. Step 4 - Do a 50% water change and add your fish. Bonus - Get some Seachem Prime in case you screw up and/or to treat any new water before it goes in your tank.

Nice video, just to clarify: If you're going to use mediums from a different tank to cycle, use filter mediums or other surfaces like substrate or hardscape. There is very little bacteria in the water column and it won't make much of a difference.

I've never seen anyone use Saran Wrap to protect the substrate when filling a tank, just a small plate. I can see that the wrap works much better, so thanks! I'll definitely do this when I put together my next tank.
