I find these types of videos interesting / amusing. I'm a 53 yr old American woman that has been in the fish keeping hobby since I was 10 yrs old. I learned the soda bottle trick to raise brine shrimp 41 yrs ago... 1 ltr bottles weren't common here back then but 2 ltr bottles worked just as good. Good to see that some of these old DIY's are still being employed today to save money in the fish keeping hobby.
Yeah it's become a big cash game now which is disappointing. There's so much we can diy but aquarium shops etc put out all these fancy things we don't even need and charge us ridiculous amounts of money 😂
Got any tips on keeping them alive to raise? I hatch alot for babies and small fish but my store I breed for wants to buy them to sell also I just can't keep them alive I was told flour is good to feed them ?
@Skeletors_Cat some of use are deleting it tho my store sells for almost half anyone else and I breed anything they want me too that costs too much from exploiting breeders
I use this setup with 2 differences: #1 I put the cut-off bottom upside down on the top to help with evaporation #2 instead of bolts and wire I use 2 large plastic zip ties
@@abizerbastawala3627 then they will die and won't be live foods for the fish anymore. You have to keep the culture going otherwise you will be making baby shrimp alot.
When you cut the bottom off, just cut a little bit further down the bottle (about 1cm). Then you can cut that excess off the bottom and make a handle out of that plastic. You can still bolt it on or just superglue it. Can use packing straps or whatever hard plastic is around. That way they won't corrode
Same! I'm all excited to breed a pair of danios I have! (This guys videos are so informative!) So I was just looking for the best way to raise the brine shrimp for that project! Score!
I've made myself A DIY also. I use thin wires but my wire dont rust, its aviation grade. Its been amazing, using a 2L Crush soda bottle. And don't make a huge hole for a thin wire, poke a hole and its good enough. For the cap, I drilled a hole just big enough for the air hose and I used silicone to seal it up and made it leak free
I have found, from using the plastic bottles for mini green houses for some of my plant starts, if you place the cut side of your bottle on a hot surface ( I use a small saute pan that I never use to cook with, on my stove to heat it up) the plastic will kind of solidify (and smooth a bit), making it much more sturdier - less flimsy.. you're not really melting it at high heat - just medium heat, while you gently push the bottle down to make good contact. It takes about 30 seconds lol..
Thanks a lot for this video! (and all your others) Just made two like these as you showed. Now I live in the cold sweden, so I just hanged them on my radiator for some heat😁 Worked like a charm!
Great tutorial! One thing I would change with your design is to have the blue valve higher than the water level. That way you can just close the valve and unplug that instead of the connection to your main air system. Other than that, it looks like a very sturdy build!
Hi Nick, Congrats on opening your new store. I think you could definitely save some more money by using a heavy grade fishing line and fishing knot to tie….. no nuts, bolts or wires needed😊
So love your videos, zero criticism... wondering though... Rather that drilling holes that can rust why not do a whole macrame planter type deal to hang and not need holes at all?
I'd really like to know how if you're still happy with these. I heard online that unhatched eggs will get compacted in the output valve when using these caps. Has this been the case for you?
So I think I may have a solution to your problem with the wires rusting. I think I heard in a newer video you mentioned that you had stopped using this method because of the rusting wires. Have you tried sliding the wire inside some tubing (like what you are using with the air pump), and then either melting the end shut or plugging it with a dab of silicone? Just something to keep the water out. Then just feed it through the drilled holes in the bottle as usual. Would probably be a good idea to then wrap the tube encased wire back on itself a bit and maybe secure with a plumbing epoxy or something to keep it from releasing the bottle from the water weight. Another option that might even be simpler and solves the risk of the tube encased wire letting the bottle slip would be to, instead of using wire, use a thin chain from the hardware store (the thinnest should still be good enough to hold this tiny amount of weight but you can always double check with the clerk). Then run the chain through the tubing, enough to go down through the drilled hole and back up on each side of the bottle (so like two U s, one per side). Allow a chain link or two to stick out of the very end of the tubing. Then use a small carabineer to link the chain ends all together and to then hang from the hooks. Small chain seems to be pretty cheap and obviously aquarium tubing is cheap, so you are just looking at the cost of the carabineers! If that continued to rust I would buy a small bit of tubing that is very large, large enough to fit over the carabineer you select, then as a last step, slide the big tubing down on one side over the tube encased chain. Secure the chain links to the carabineer and then slide the large tubing up and over the carabineer, ensuring it comes down a little bit on each side over the smaller tubing. Then for a final measure of overkill you could plug up any holes between the large tubing and smaller tubing with a bit of silicone. Might be total overkill but it's cheap! Just wanted to offer my two cents! Really, really appreciate your videos and all of the work you've done for the hobby thus far. You're a legend!
if you need to upgrade the wire there is something known a locking wire that is used on race cars and airplanes and it is stainless steel and relatively cheap. I know I have seen marine grade locking wire but I don't know if all of it is marine grade.
2:20 -- RE: Marine grade hardware, wire hangers, and Brine -- A thought occurred to me as I was watching and thinking about the problem of rust. It should be possible to find a replacement for the wire "U", perhaps a very stiff plastic or aluminum. And, if that's not cost effective, its also probably possible to find some sacrificial metal to prevent the wire from rusting. Now, with that being said, I could also anticipate that perhaps having more Zinc interfering with the chemistry in the breeder bottle would be a bad thing, but it also occurs to me that simply having iron and steel in contact with the water will be doing a similar but slightly different thing. Either way, the preferable third option in my mind are very heavy duty plastic "zip ties".
Just skip the wire, bolts and washers and use a thicker fishing line. It’s very sturdy, the water can’t damage it and you’ll avoid rust all together. You might save some money too.
Great channel. One problem with those caps is that a cap full of the most dense brine shrimp is missed. Just cut off the inside tube on the outlet side and you get all the shrimp.
hey bud, thx for sharing all the helpful information and way to make the hobby available to more people. I got a question I recently encountered a problem with my cardinal tetra they have these white colored worm like creature attached to their head and body how do u treat them. also can you share method how u disinfect ur big tanks if u identify such parasite or disease. thank you
What do you feed the brine shrimp naupli with? Do you ever grow brine shrimp into adult size? Each time you harvest the naupli, do you rinse them out before giving them to the baby fish (so the salt in the water of the brine shrimp hatchery current get incorporated into the aquariums? Thanks a lot for your amazing and very informative videos! Keep up!
Hi Nick, great video. Just a question about harvesting. How do you deal with any unhatched eggs? Don't they fall to the bottom and harvest out into your jar first?
You can get cheap aluminium wire in craft section of discount stores. I use it to make plant holders for over the side of the tank. What brand bbs do you get in Australia & where from? I’ve been getting off eBay, but not very good hatch rate 😞❤️🇦🇺
Great video, as usual. Could you please tell me what time of BBS eggs you're using? Tried a few types and they don't produce nothing close to that. Thanks!
Nice video, for a person that only has 5 aquariums and 1 hatchery, how long do you think live baby brine shrimp can survive in the fridge, it takes me around 2 days for a new batch.
cheep just knock 2 holes in the sides use some copper wire drop in and air stone no hard wear needed or just cut another bottle in half to hold it up right and use a lamp if you need to warm the water and you can get a horse needle and some air line to remove as many as you need to feed your fish old school still works
Thanks, have been looking at the expensive ones, this is great. Just a question, does the first washer go by the nut head, before looping the wire around?
Thanks for sharing! I have been contemplating ordering 2 zyst brine shrimp hatcheries! I have about 400 psudomagil fry (4 different species), about 50 bosmani, 50 red dragon, and 75 cpd! I really did not want to buy these! Again thanks for sharing
What's the name of the bottle cap you use that has 2 airline fittings on it? I use DIY hatchery and that cap would help so much and thank you for your content
You have a great idea here however, you didn't say what you were doing while doing with the co2 cap. What was that that you wrapped around the top of the bottle? Is there a particular way to hook up the hoses, I mean are the connections different or the same? What is that thing that looks like a splitter? Why did you put it in your mouth? You have to understand that Not everyone knows what you're doing and why. I can't make one of these until I know ALL parts needed and what to do with them. Can you explain it to me in detail please?
When he was wrapping the neck of the bottle, he had text on the screen saying to wrap Teflon tape (also known as plumbers tape) to help avoid leaks. Secondly, he said to add airline tubing to both nipples of the cap. On one of the hoses, he attached a spigot (see 9:12 mark where he shows the bag called "in-line tap"). This is used when he harvests the BBS. The second airline hose is connected to the air supply. It has a connector that allows you to increase or decrease the airflow depending on your needs.
Been wanting to make one of these, but what would be the way to store/keep the shrimp for longer? (I have 1 x56L tank with few endless males and a Betta and most of hatch would go to waste…)
You can freeze them in ice cube trays. Just fill the cube tray the amount that you think they will eat. If I only need to feed a couple of fish, I only put a small amount in each. If you feed with a pipette you can measure how much.
