Hey Scott, I make this dish quite often but I use a different method of making the Yorkshire batter. I use the mug method. one mug of flour, one mug of eggs, one mug of half water and milk, a splash of vinegar, some salt and pepper and mix it all with a stick blender. It makes huge Yorkshire puddings in a muffin tray, and the best toad in the hole ever seen on the planet.

Well Mr. Rea first I tried your proper Stuffin. Tonight I made the toad in the hole old school. This may be the first time it was made in Wyoming in quite sometime. I decided to make brussel sprouts and parsnips, then used the last of the pan to make a nice mushroom gravy. I must be wrong, my ancestry is German but there must bean englishman in there too!! That stuff is just good!! Thanks mate!

Someone's already commented on saving on the washing up, so in the same vein... We brown our sausages in a cast iron pan (skillet) on the hob, then add and heat more fat if necessary, pour over the batter and rush into the oven. Less time for the hot pan to cool down (no need to move the sausages), less washing up - what's not to like?

I've recently discovered toad in the hole! I've always had Yorkshire Pudding with roast beef, but our local butcher does these amazing beef sausages (the pork ones are good too but not as good in the Toad in the Hole). Our toad is usually served with mushroom gravy, but will definitely try your recipe next time! Scott, do you have any recommendations for skirt steak? Its the cheapest cut at our local butcher and we love it just griddled with a garlic/herby marinade and served on rice or with a salad.. But I told my (technologically illiterate) mum about your channel and she desperately wants your opinion on this wonderful cut we have just discovered!

P.S I loved your "faggots" god man I'd donate my own kidney to taste them again, I could make them but I had a local village butcher who made them so well it seemed pointless, I could smell them from my home & it would draw me up the street! Damn, I only ever had a home made toad in the hole once in my life at a sleepover at my mates house. I didn't expect sausages instead of toads and was slightly disappointed at first, but wolfed it down. Sadly my own mum never made it or even just plain yorkshire puds and roast beef, we were a roast chicken on a sunday family. Though she did tell me how she learned how to make the yorkshires in school using super hot dripping and not opening the oven (the good old days when Home Economics included proper cooking lessons - now they teach feminist veganism 101 instead, lol). I will have to make this for nostalgia's (and my greedy tums) sake.

why did you not use the sausage oil to fry the onions ? it adds to the taste of the gravy nicely , i always do and yeah do not use cheap sausages , unless its all you can afford but look in reduced section if your cooking it and eating it that day , they will be fine , at least 70percent meat sausages are so much nicer anyway , not richmond if you can help it , they are the least meat in them

For a perfect batter I was always taught the rule of “thirds”...so no matter what size your eggs (the only variable in the ingredients) then if you crack them into a measuring jug , then add the the equivalent amount of milk....empty these 2 into a mixing bowl , dry the measuring jug and then add the same measurement of plain flour and tip that into your mixing bowl and whisk it all up to make your batter...voila! This way you aren’t tied to an exact measurement recipe that can fluctuate depending on the size of the eggs you use. The bigger (or smaller) the eggs the more (or less) of the other ingredients you will need to use.....let the egg volume be your recipe guide....a third of egg , a third of milk and a third of plain flour.....”thirds”

Yeh same here equal volume of milk eggs and flour.. prick the pud.. helps with the collapse. Out of the oven,. but I be honest made kind of sad looking still tastes great . Biggest issue is not making the links dry.. not the taste of the pud..even not as nice of it can be.. but easy low cost tasty dinner .. even a not perfect pudding got a nice taste :) something about hat combo and the proper lard.. but my grandma was a war time cook immigrated to the us.. got links its either bangers ( not that you can get proper bangers) and mash.. or old not great but decent toad in the hole :)

Scott Rea, from a cowboy country father down here in the US. - central Texas, our family loves these hearty meals from the UK. Classic Texas BBQ one week, Toad in the Hole from the UK the next, you can't beat it. I love to cook and have been experimenting with dishes from other places in the world lately. Dare I say, Tex-Mex, Southern soul, cajun, and Texas BBQ isn't enough?! Your channel represents some of the best food ya'll have to offer across the pond there I'd say. What most in the U.S might not realize is the diverse sausage selection there is in the U.K. That being said it can be made with any favorite sausage you like. The 'secret' ingredient is the beef dripping he uses. Total beef fat (not good for your cholesterol) but adds a great flavor. I'll make it using lard and maybe add more Yorkshire pudding. I like the onion gravy he adds and I'm making it tonight using British bangers. Thanks for sharing.

Saw this video in the morning and decided this dish was going to be breakfast. Made it in two personal-size souffle dishes - one for me, one for my son.
