Mardi Gras! And what is the drink of Mardi Gras? A Hurricane of course! This cocktail goes back a long way and has changed into an almost completely different drink over the years. Regardless of the change, it's still great to drink when you are down in New Orleans celebrating Mardi Gras. Just don't ask me what I had to do to get these beads

Awesome, I’m gonna start calling people goats at work and see how that works out for me. 🤣 The only thing we made with sherry was The Flame of Love. That one used Fino Sherry. We should do more. Perhaps the Fog Cutter. It's one of the only Tiki drinks that use a cream sherry as a float. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers!

@BarTalkCocktails
@BarTalkCocktails 3 года назад
I used Myer's (planters punch brand) dark rum. It's a blend of Jamaican rums with flavours of molasses, raisin, and baking spice. Aged in ex-bourbon barrels, it has a nice oak tone with a hint of vanilla. Cheers!

Sir good day. Can i ask you? Being a bartender, is it necessary to know how to flair the bottles or it maybe optional.
@BarTalkCocktails
@BarTalkCocktails 6 лет назад
Hello and thanks for watching. Flair bartending is all about entertainment and it really depends on the bar you're working. Some clubs will expect it from you. Others, not so much. It really is an optional trick of the trade. I've always flaired my personality behind the bar.

I did a lot of research on the original hurricane. It used a product called Fassionola which was passion fruit based. It was created by Don Beach (Don the beachcomber) who protected the formula by keeping it a secret. Patents were about as useful as tits on a bull in 1940's Louisiana. Consequently nobody actually knows the true recipe for the original Hurricane. The classic made in this video is probably as close as it gets. Based on my research; I will suggest adding a shot of strawberry nectar, canned or home made which appears to have been a component of Fassionala. Cheers!
@BarTalkCocktails
@BarTalkCocktails 3 года назад
There are many businesses attempting to make Fassionola, but the ingredients vary from company to company. So, who knows what is right? Don Beach took many of his recipes to the grave with him. Good idea on using strawberry nectar though. I think it would certainly add another flavour dimension to a Hurricane. One day, I might attempt making my own Fassionola just for the sake of science. Ha. Thanks for writing in. Cheers!

any need for the rum to be a plain jane jamaican dark like myers or coruba? i have never tried this with a funky jamaican dark like hamilton. & i know with some of these funk bombs, you handle with care. oh yes
@BarTalkCocktails
@BarTalkCocktails 3 года назад
Like you, I have never made or tried a Hurricane with funky rums. Probably because in the bar, it's not to everyone's tastes. I think the first step would be to try those rums on their own, neat and unadulterated, so you know what you're working with. That will determine juice to rum ratios as many funky rums tend to be intensely fruity and sometimes nutty. You could be on to something here... Once the warm weather comes, I'll have to experiment. Cheers!

If you prefer using only dark rum, you might like using rhum agricole which, if you're not familiar is rum made from cane juice instead of molasses. It has a funky earthy taste and goes great with the passion fruit.

BarTalk&Cocktails fassionola is the original syrup in hurricane drinks and other tiki drinks like the cobra fang. The bad thing about it is that you can only buy it when the Louisiana strawberries are in season but you can make it yourself because they sell out quick. It's made by cocktail & sons.

Hi Bruce! Just had to write a wee note to thank you for not including grapefruit juice in your hurricane. Wherever I look that bloody grapefruit juice is in the recipe, which is a no-no for anyone taking a statin for cholesterol...or was that the blue pill? I always get those mixed up. Hmmmm...that might explain the wife's foul mood. Anyways, from one old fart to another old fart...THANK YOU!!!!!
