As someone who plays in a jazz big band and combo, you nailed this Also the rhythm at 4:36 is called a clave. Typically a 2nd percussionist plays a wood block/fills with timbales at the beginning
this is just one of many claves, even bossa uses several types of claves, not even considering other genres i am actually latin american and percussionist and man i love claves so much, i feel them in my soul and body so hard, especially after that adam neely video where he explained claves as a lopsided metronome, that shit was eye opening
@pollosasadosalcarbon ok thanks for letting me know. I'm a trumpet player so I don't know a lot of the technical stuff. I'll give the Adam Neely video a watch. I love his videos
As a Brazilian self-thought musician I can confirm this person is having way too much fun playing the cat synth lmao loved it. We gotta spread the word of bossa nova
As a Brazilian, I just wanted to make an errata, bossa is not a subgenre of jazz, it is actually born from samba that came from the outskirts and goes through a process of cultural appropriation by a richer, whiter class, especially in Rio de Janeiro, which used jazz references on top of samba in order to make samba more commercial to foreign people, but the root and initial genre of bossa is samba, which is a specifically Brazilian rhythm
@@GDRhythmic I don't believe there's anything wrong with enjoying bossa nova also considering that it played a role in important social subjects like in the fight against Brazil's military dictatorship Like even though it's more elitist than other genres there's nothing necessarily wrong with liking it there's still artists and a history involving the genre that has nothing to do with this cultural appropriation but it is a good thing to know and understand when sharing or criticizing tradicional bossa nova songs this is all just my opinion tho id like to hear what other ppl think 😭
NO WAY as a brazilian myself, this gave me the happiness i needed this week :3 yes i came from the all my fellas song, but i will def will listen to all your music from now on (you deserve it)
most fl tutorials i usually find are really dragged out, but this kind of style of tutorial seems like the kind i could actually learn from. 10/10 content
if frizk was a music teacher at school i would go back to irl school just to attend the music classes, the sheer amount of enthusiasm in frizk's voice from explaining something as simple in music production as chords is just insane
Im a big fan of bossa nova and that chord progression is known as the classic 2-5-1. basically you take the 2nd note of the scale and turn into a minor 7th, and then you take the 5th and 1st note of the scale and turn them to major 7ths. It is such a simple formula and it just sounds so good and funky. love the vibe!
Adding a tritone substitution (from ii-V-I to ii-ii♭-I) makes it all the more interesting. It's used a lot in the Getz/Gilberto (holy grail) recording a ton, and it adds a descending chromatic (1 semitone) progression into a resolution, which gives a spicy tension yet a satisfying resolution.
Over time, I’ve learned coding, 3D modeling, advanced level design, and this one little goober of a video is inspiring me to stop ripping music and develop my own. Take a sub dude. ❤
7:39 "so fun making music!" is so real sometimes its easy to get lost producing but it's great ur able to be so positive :) refreshing to find ppl happy to produce rather than stressing to get sum new out every day
I guess I may have perfect pitch too, because as you put each chord in, I thought the next ones should be the same as you did! Great tutorial, Frizk! You're genuinely inspiring me. I've never managed to have any musical ideas before, but your "how-to/how I made" videos have helped me a lot! I might even try writing something soon.
I dont think you have perfect pitch, as that is being able to immediately recognise any note that you hear, like seeing colours and being able to sing (for instance) a D perfectly without a reference. I think you just have a lot of musicality and flow, which are much more important than being able to tell what note is being played. Have fun making music though :)
What Frizk calls perfect pitch here seems closer to "relative pitch", which is more about knowing the relation between notes. E.G., if someone plays for you a C and an A, you can hear that it's a major 6th/minor 3rd interval
yea singing really helps with making music in general, you can learn theory but you can do just as well by singing the notes that sound right and using your ears and your intuition
I just want to say Frizk, you are doing what I dreamt of doing as a kid. I’ve been making music for about 5 years now, and this inspired me to branch out some more. It’s interesting, seeing all the people in this comment section being amazed how you said “making music is fun,” while the whole point of making music is to HAVE FUN! Be creative, improvise, change that instrument that is out of place, add that drum beat to give it a nice vibe, let your imagination go! So, keep doing what you’re doing, and have fun! ❤️ - ThatsOwen | 11/28/2023
You're really natural at making content! Make more!!! There's not enough silly music production content out there, most of the production content is by people who take themselves way too seriously. I really enjoyed this video and the all my fellas one ❤
2:19 you might have relative pitch instead! Instead of making it easier to identify pitches and chords by ear, it makes it easier to construct and derive chords by hearing how they fit together :3
I love how you used zenology for the meow synth. It is a very good replacement because it is more customizable instead of having the same synth sound. Thanks
I love LABS! I've used it for over 3 years now and never get tired of it. The piano sounds are great. The drums sound cool for jazzy stuff too if you mess with them a bit.
The sheer genuine. . . Genuineness. This is just you. You judy enjoy doing this. And damn, you're *good* at it. Just watching you work, and watching your sheer, simple enjoyment of it all. Wholesome AF, man. Entertaining as heck. Love this.
You make music creation very approachable, which is insane because it's always been very intimidating to me. Bless for giving me confidence to finally try this out.
I just found your channel on accident and I’m subscribing because you’re so cool. I love that you focus on the fun part of making music rather than being overly technical, makes me feel better as a musician bc I sometimes get in my head about my work being too simple! It’s refreshing :)
created a playlist with all the stuff you recommended and I'm excited to dig in to some new stuff!! You are insanely gifted and talented in your music, yet your personality is very bright and uplifting! Please continue tutorials on different types of music you enjoy!
im glad im not the only who has made bossa nova with meow synth there's something with meow synth that goes well with bossa nova even doors elevator jam does it
lmao I watched this vid and was like "yo this is peak music making I like this guy" and then I click on ur profile and you made all my fellas, hell yeah that song's a banger
i would use meowsynth if it didn't had that clip of a cat meowing, since the program is so old it's easy to assume the cat already passed and that makes me sad :c
Finally! After years, an FL Studio producer who's into what I'm into! I play piano in a jazz-y band, but love producing my own music. But in the DAW world, I feel pretty much in the minority with my taste. This is sooo appreciated! I love getting ideas from others and your stuff sounds great. You definitely have the feel of it spot on!
If you're old enough to experience video games of the late 80s and 90s, there are some game music remixes out there where the artists used FL Studio. A lot of the Sonic the Hedgehog themes had jazzed up remixes. I even remixed an X-men game level and did it in a jazzy house style!
