Dhal or split pea soup is a must have in every Trini home. You can eat this with rice, roti or drink it like a soup. It's a simple yet flavourful dish....try it! I think the typical Trini eats dhal at least twice or 3 times a week.

I normally add curry as well to my dhal and after it mash up on its own then I add more garlic, pimentos, shadow beny, and dried time, parsley and all purpose seasoning before I chung-kay it... I always put chicken foot, pigtail or smoked bones in it as well... I like it a little thick and it's delicious

Hi Taste of Trini. 'chongkae ' . Is this unique Trini Indian ? I am not aware of it being done in any other type of cooking. It is a good way to infuse the flavor of the cumin, garlic and onion. One must hear the sizzle when it is added to the dhal. The cover as a shield is very important. It is done heating olive oil and pouring a tablespoon on buljol. Where else I know not. Maybe some other terminology in another part of the world.

The tap water where I live is quite acidic. If we try to cook anything like lentils or beans without a little baking soda they will never soften. I once boiled chickpeas for 11 hours trying to get them soft and it never did work. I did some research and now add a half tsp of baking soda and they cook to perfection in no time.

@kdotwilly7935 11 месяцев назад
hi do you add baking soda during the boiling stage, how long do you boil yellow split peas for? thank you
@mustwereallydothis
@mustwereallydothis 11 месяцев назад
@@kdotwilly7935 add the baking soda at any point while they're boiling. I sometimes add it right at the start. Other times I cook them for the reccomended time and add a little baking soda if they still aren't soft enough at that point. Then just boil them until they're as soft as you want them to be. I can't give you a time they need to boil because I've honestly never paid attention to how long they take to cook. I just keep checking on them until they're done.
