Did you know there's a Korean word for tteok-lovers? My friends used to call me "tteok-bo" because I love Korean rice cakes so much, in all forms. What kinds of tteok have you tried and which are your favorites?
Aww... you got called "tteok-bo"?? I'd think I'd wear that as a badge of honour! This dish was so wonderful to learn about, and so beautifully prepared. I can see why you'd want to carry on the tradition... it looks incredibly tasty. Thank you so much for this!
I love these types of videos and learning about different traditions. It's also fascinating to see how others celebrate the new years. our family enjoys tamales during the holidays...maybe one day I'll be brave enough to do them myself. I guess i got a new years resolution already, lol thanks for sharing this wonderful dish Annie. Happy Holidays and Happy new Year to you and your family!
Oh, you're brave enough! Looking forward to your tamale video, Sal. 😊 Wishing you and your loved ones the same. Looking forward to seeing your YT success in the new year!
I see you're enjoying the same kind of weather as in Germany.😆 I hope you can find some comfort in this dish. Wishing you warmth, health and a joyful new year!
It was a term of endearment so I didn't mind, especially cause it's absolute truth!🤣 Aren't you glad those Jr. High days are behind us though? Wishing you a very happy, blessed new year, Karen!
Love your tip to char the onion, I’m sure that would make a lovely base for the soup. Where can you get those anchovies? Would you eat this broth any other time of the year? Or just save it for New Years?
Thanks for asking such good questions! You can find dried anchovies in most Korean groceries. I hope you have one near you? They run small to large. With the smallest ones, you don't need to remove the head and guts. As for the broth, you can use it for all kinds of things! I usually make an extra-large portion and freeze it for making miso soup, sundubu jjigae, tteokbokki, ramen, udon or Korean curry. The tteokguk is now enjoyed all year round, not just for New Years. But in the olden days, it was considered a luxury since it was so labor-intensive to make the tteok. I gotta say though we do eat tteokguk throughout the year, it certainly tastes special on New Year's day.😊
