Hi John, do you have a cost estimate for the store bought slides, vs the timber, fixings, and varnish for your home made version..? Of course we can't factor in our time as that will vary from person to person and tooling available.. Here in Australia, full extension slides like these are quite expensive, especially if you need heavy duty ones.. Many years ago I made a power tool drawer for under my work bench, and the 40kg slides I got were about 45 bucks a pair.. To be fair, they've been reliable and trouble free in the 11 years since, so I'm also wondering how timber ones would hold up over time. Great content, and thanks for sharing 👍

Sweet. Am building a sanding station for my oscillating sander and small belt/disc sander, and the room left for a small drawer to hold the misc. drums, discs, etc. is too short in depth to use metal ones, as the big box store’s shortest ones are 14” long. Will build yours. Did like the comment about eliminating the screw threads-to-slide contact, in order to minimize wear.

Metal ones will also be stronger. Don't get me wrong, these look great and I'm thinking of using them for a set of shop drawers I've got coming up soon, but these would not work well if you were going to be storing extremely heavy things like metal stock or machines like a bench grinder.

The weight is on the slides, the bolts are basicaly travel stops.
@Sturmcrow1

Nice project!! Those drawer slides are pretty expensive around my area... A pair of questions: ¿How much ware do you anticipate in the plywood groove, due to the screw threads and the weight of the contents of the drawer? ¿Could you use a kind of plastic sleeve or something?

Very good idea - thanks, John! Also; plywood seems like a better choice than solid wood :) Less chance of warping - which I think is important when all the parts are part of a mechanical moving system. (If the shape changes due to moisture, or the wood drying unevenly or whatnot, everything could lock up) So yes; easier, since it's already a uniform thickness. But also the better choice for this project, i think :)

@KipdoesStuff
@KipdoesStuff 4 года назад
the drawers can be installed and removed when they are fully extended. just like regular metal slides.
@ricos1497
@ricos1497 4 года назад
@@KipdoesStuff Yep, just unscrewed. I think they'd actually be easier than normal slides as the drawer will probably sit nicely in the runner whilst installing. I wonder if a slight angle on the runners (dovetail, 3 degrees or something) might help installation too, as it'll hold the drawer into the runner.

Very cool and great design! My only worry would be the machine screw threads wearing out the slide over time. Maybe make the holes bigger on the slides and use a nylon washer over the screw? Either way, I love it!
@paulruud5804
@paulruud5804 Год назад
I had the same concern and eventually realized that the screws don't carry any weight. So even if you install them so that they are touching the wood slot, the wear won't matter. As far as I can tell, the screws do two things. First, they are stops. That's the most obvious. Second, the heads of the screws keep everything lined up. The screw heads keep the drawer, panel, and the middle extension piece all moving in a single direction. It's a very clever design and deceptively simple. I was designing a sliding dovetail version of John's drawer extensions to keep everything lined up when the second function of the screws hit me.

Is there a specific reason why you chose a machine screw (fine thread I assume?) Will the screws experience much stress or pull out. I LOVE this whole idea by the way.
@genegregg3241
@genegregg3241 4 года назад
The threads of the machine screw are smaller than the 1/4" slot they ride in. The only contact on the screw is the underside of the head, on the 1/2" slot.
@regularguy9264
@regularguy9264 4 года назад
Right, I get that. I should have elaborated but had to go carve the turkey (wife takes precedence over John!) From what I can tell, the screws are used to hold the slides together as well as act as a stop at full extension. The stress I was referring to was acting as a stop rather than any friction against the slides. Given that it is plywood, I suspect the fine threads are....fine for the application, but I know John has thought this through and would have an explanation. Thanks for the comment though, you are quite correct in your point.
