I just finished installing my Noctua fans and holy cow, what a difference! Thank you so much for this video, because I have never heard of Noctua before this. The only upgrade I did not do was the Fanless PSU. My stock PSU is still going strong and I will continue to use it until it fails on me. I subbed to your channel and I look forward to future 3d printer mods for the Ender series.

Going fanless made a big difference as that fan was on constantly. Cost more but if you ever need a PSU for a project but fanless and swap out the one for 3d printer

For the part cooling fan, you can simply use a 5015 fan or similar and set your slicer to 75% max fan speed. This will make it quieter and no additional circuit needed. Also, you can get a printer tent like the one Creality makes and that will make your printer far quieter and help you print ABS/ASA more reliably with less particulates/fumes in your room. All my printers use quality dual ball bearing 24V fans like Sunons and are in tents.
@notenoughtech
@notenoughtech 2 года назад
If you optimise for flow and noise then undervolted 5020 is what you want to go with. Same airflow with complete silent performance. I want to keep my slicing profiles mostly unchanged this is why I wanted to match the airflow of the original creality fan

Excellent video, especially the discussion on fans. Most people on the internet just tell you to deal with the noise. I bought and installed a 60 mm by 20 mm noctua fan for my part cooling fan. But it was a 5 volt one and I couldn't get it to run slow enough to be silent while still having good airflow. With 100 % power it had good airflow but it was noisier than the stock radial fan on my prusa mk3. I'll try a larger radial fan next.

I have an idea to test all these fancy blower setups ppl post online for their hotends. Considering all I tested so far... I think the conclusions would be rather surprising to see.

When I got my E3v2 I printed a Satsana cooler duct and used a 24v 5015 fan for print cooling (can be adjusted in Cura to 50%) and a 40x40x20 24v fan for the heat break. That made the printer almost completely silent. I put a open mesh cover on the power supply without a fan and a 12v 80mm fan (with Buck converter) on the power supply. The thing is dead silent running at normal speeds of 50 to 70mm/sec. That whole conversion only cost about $30 USD.

Watercooling on an bedslinger design seems ridiculous in my eyes. You won't be spitting out filament fast enough to really need anything more than a silent (even Noctua) fan to keep the cold-end cold. As for your sound when throttling the larger fan on the old Ender 3, you probably were using low-frequency (possibly software-timed) PWM. Whether that could be replaced by HW PWM depends on the board used, but I think you could also add some small filter circuit on the voltage going to the fan to turn the PWM into a more smooth steady voltage level.
@notenoughtech
@notenoughtech 2 года назад
As this is a complete print head you could mount it on other designs for sure. Slingers is what I have so I had to roll with it. It looks cool tho. Might be getting a second one just for the sheer joy! 5020 seem to respond well so I just need to order one. Maybe I was just unlucky with my 4020. That pitched whine isn't as terrible just more noticeable in silence.

Mine PSU actually does turn off the fan. But it was using 12V fan anyhow, so no need to step down. Strange, as this is 24V power supply, but hey...

@sprint955st
@sprint955st 2 года назад
@@notenoughtech hey so I looked at from two angles - a) modify the file that comes with the BTT board to accommodate for the settings in the original Hictop board (hundreds?) and b) modify the Hictop file to include/replace with appropriate settings from the BTT supplied Marlin file (fewer, surely?j Problem is, not having been current in coding since VB for Office 97, despite 35 years in IT, it looks like I’ve got a loooot of coding tools/concepts to relearn before I get any kind of useable file, when all I really wanted to learn was 3D printing. Hence I bought a newer machine. But then I have all this hardware lying around, why settle for only one printer when I can still have 2? That’s the long story. The short answer is, I have 2 part-finished files and I’m still unsure how to compile and deploy. I don’t think I’ve found a decent straightforward beginner tutorial on that which doesn’t assume a LOT. And thanks replying, appreciate it.

The loudest part on my printer is the power supply fan. I really need to replace that cheap power supply Creality supplied with a decent Meanwell one and throw a quiet fan in it. The hot end cooler that Creality supplied on my Ender 5 Pro is virtually silent so replacing thank goodness. I have seen Creality offer a genuine "silent" 24V fan for the hot end, and I think that is what they installed in my Ender 5. So quiet compared to a lot of the Ender 3's I've seen.... The SKR Boards are good, especially if you update Merlin to a new version and configure it for them as they support linear advance, which Creality boards do not as Creality run the drivers in stand alone mode.

@EsotericArctos
@EsotericArctos 2 года назад
@@madorax251 I haven't tried Klipper, but I was under the impression that the TMC2208 in standalone can not do linear advance. These are the silent ones. Some of the V4.2.2 boards are not silent and come with A4988 drivers. The A4988 driver does support Linear advance, but these are not a silent driver.

Hi regarding part cooling fan, there is catch22 as it is controlled using not voltage but with impulses. Check ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mAOm78YBksg.html at 6:43

Noctua is fine for electronics but they’re absolutely terrible for the hotend or part cooling. You can get a great 24v fan that will outperform the stock fan and will be as quiet as Noctua without suffering any performance. It’s the wrong type of fan for layer cooling. Half of all problems people have would be solved by not putting the wrong fans on their hotends.
