How To Make Your Own Budget External SSD Drive!

A Mac is already very expensive, so most people can't or won't upgrade the internal storage for increased capacity. The 2TB storage upgrade option from Apple costs $800 USD! What if I told you that you could create your OWN external storage device with the same storage capacity (but not quite as fast) for just 1/3 the cost?
In this video I explore the world of external NVMe m.2 SSD drives and enclosures, and put one together with my own parts and test it's performance on my M1 MacBook Pro (with a 256GB internal SSD).
Here are the parts for the NVMe External Drive featured in this video:

@Cyril29a
@Cyril29a 3 года назад
But macs are free. You just have to buy a used one that is a year old for about 2/3 the price of a new one then a year later you sell it for about $100 more than you paid for it and then buy another and repeat every few months or every year and never pay for a mac again. I have been doing this since 2003 and not only do I have top of the line macs in my home but I also have thousands of dollars on top of the free macs from the continuous flips. Don't buy new macs just buy a used one and snipe a good price when you want to buy it then when you sell take your time and charge a bit over market value to make up the loss of value during the year you owned it. The first time I wanted a mac I bought and sold about 10 times in the space of a few weeks until I had enough money made to get the mac I wanted for free. Then I thought about it and wondered why I should stop so I kept doing it albeit at a lower pace and made beer money every month with only a few hours of effort. I recommend everyone do this.

@@niko1even But it has no resale value. You totally missed the point. Buyin a PC is throwing your money away after a year or two, buying a mac gets you 100% of your money back if you buy and sell it using the system I outlined. What is the point of this comment?

Very nice video, lovin' this channel lately. Ps: for those people who need that extra speed (depending on the nvme ssd you buy it could be even faster than the included on the mac) there are Thunderbolt cases. I have one from Orico and with a Silicon Power nvme ssd and it performs outstanding.

I've actually used this for about a year or so with an intel 660p m.2 drive. I haven't had too many issues. I tried using a type C to type C thunderbolt cable and had some issues with it disonnecting randomly on Windows, but using a type A to type C cable seems to work much better, but it's pretty quick as is, haven't had any issues or complaints with speed.

PCIe Gen3 SSD's do not really need cooling when used with USB 3.2 Gen2 connections, so what case you use should not matter in terms of cooling. However, if you are running them in Thunderbolt, with larger file transfers, you will want to use some thermal pads in whatever enclosure you have that drive inside.

Right now you can get it with 1 Terabyte already installed for $255 and just replace the drive later if you want more. I connected it via a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure to my Mac mini M1. Getting a solid 2500MB/s read & write, which is pretty much the same speed as the internal SSD. got the M1 mini with a cheap enclosure and a Samsung EVO 970 Pro m.2 stick. Making it bootable in Big Sur on the M1 is a bit of a trick, but doable, and worthy of a future video. This stick gets very hot, and at the beginning, it would drop off all the time. But over time, it's become 100% reliable. Boot time is noticeably longer, but still a lot faster than an internal SSD on a 2015 MBP. Running the OS externally is slower then on the M1 internal, but in real world use, usable. I know 2tb is a lot of storage but is there an option for a dual nvme enclosure? Like lets say down the road you want to upgrade the 2tb ssd and lets say make it a 4tb ssd, is there anything like that? Thank you! Awesome video btw, I'm totally thinking of doing this!
